Book excerpt: This discussion covers the subject of Instrumental Music in the Worship. It was conducted in the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee from May 31 to June 5, 1923. One of the best ways to learn is by hearing two different points of view expressed and defended. The reader who is truly interested in the truth on Scriptural worship will profit greatly from a study of this work. Is instrumental music in worship authorized by the Scriptures or is it just a matter of opinion? A study of the arguments made in this book will help the honest of heart find the answer to this question.

Book excerpt: We're missing out ... on hearing one another’s songs, on worship in our daily lives, on passion in our praise, on the dance of David, on fellowship with Christians who disagree, on sharing testimony of God’s work in our assemblies, on agreeing together, and more. In the Churches of Christ, some begin to broaden their experience in praise, wishing they could answer the questions of those who feel left behind. "Missing More than Music" understands why we look at the same evidence and disagree. There is hope for worship and unity. We're missing more than music. Let's have all that we've been missing ... together.

Book excerpt: About the middle of the nineteenth century, the church of the Lord began to experience problems because of differing attitudes regarding how to establish scriptural authority. Two issues were especially prominent in the discussions that occurred among brethren: missionary societies and instrumental music in worship. Unfortunately, many congregations divided over these issues during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Eventually, the division became so complete that the Disciples of Christ and the churches of Christ were recognized as distinct groups.J. D. Tant (of San Marcos, Texas) and W. J. Frost (of Houston, Missouri) participated in a written debate on the instrumental music and society issues during 1904. The Tant-Frost Debate was published by F. L. Rowe (Cincinnati, Ohio) later that year. This book has been out of print for many years. Several debates on instrumental music in worship have been published through the years; however, few are readily available now. Debates on the society question were rarely published. The Otey-Briney Debate is the only other debate on this subject currently in print. Therefore, the publisher has issued this new edition of the Tant-Frost Debate in order to provide study material on these issues. Typographical errors that were detected have been corrected. In addition, Bible references have been converted from the Roman numeral form used in the original publication to a more modern form (e.g., 1 Cor. 14:15 instead of I. Cor. xiv. 15). We hope that these changes will improve readability. Our fervent desire is that good may result from the publication of this material. Let us approach the study of all religious questions with the attitude of those noble Bereans, who "searched the Scriptures daily, whether those things were so" (Acts 17:10-11).

Book A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church

Download or read book A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church written by Everett Ferguson and published by Victor Vadney. This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a methodology that I have found helpful in dealing with other topics. This procedure is to assemble the New Testament texts on the topic and interpret them, then check this interpretation against usage in early Christian literature outside the New Testament, and finally to examine the doctrinal considerations to determine if the interpretation rests on solid biblical theology. Rather than gathering quotations from secondary literature, my approach is to read the source documents in the original and present the texts in their context. At the time of first edition of the book, mine was the fullest collection of historical statements on early church music readily available. Other studies since that time are largely supportive of the historical facts presented in my work, even if the authors do not consider the evidence normative for today. My conclusion is that the practice of unaccompanied congregational singing rests on good biblical, historical and doctrinal grounds.

Book Instrumental Music In Christian Worship

Download or read book Instrumental Music In Christian Worship written by Brad Freeman and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-03-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TODAY A VARIETY OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS HOLD AN IMPORTANT PLACE IN WORSHIP IN MANY WORSHIP SERVICES. The result is that many have grown up under the assumption that the use of musical instruments in public worship is perfectly acceptable, even mandatory. Any worship service without them is viewed now as unusual at best or worse, out of accord with true worship. IT WASN'T ALWAYS THIS WAY. From New Testament times up until the last two hundred years, the overwhelming practice of Christian worship knew nothing of instrumental music. This booklet not only discusses the historical background surrounding musical instruments in worship but also a Biblical basis for that earlier tradition and practice. The author argues for a Biblical position regarding instrumental music that few have heard in recent times. In fact, one would be hard pressed to find anything in print that would even hint at suggesting this current practice should be questioned. In a day when instrumental worship has become center stage, so to speak, a return to the Bible to reexamine this important topic is needed. NOW MORE THAN EVER, CHRISTIANS ARE CALLED TO STUDY WITH FRESH EYES WHAT THE BIBLE TEACHES ABOUT CHRISTIAN WORSHIP.

Book excerpt: Does the Bible justify instrumental music for Christian worship? In 2006, advocates for the use of instrumental music in worship presented a three-part series titled "The Both/And Church," suggesting that people should read old texts in fresh, new ways. These advocates proposed that their understanding of biblical texts justifies instruments in church worship. Since that time, some churches have followed their lead.Ironically, this misreading of the relevant biblical texts is not new. The arguments made by these proponents are the arguments that have been made since the late 1800s among advocates of instrumental music in worship.Thomas Alexander answers these "new" arguments in a caring, biblical way in Music in Worship. He carefully evaluates each of the reasons given by "both/and church" proponents and shows that the facts about what God wants in worship have not changed - human attitudes have.

This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of the Church It will, no doubt, be said that the attempt to prove the unjustifiable employment of instrumental music in the public worship of the Church is schismatical, since the practice is now well-nigh universal; that it is trivial, inasmuch as it concerns a mere circumstantial in the services of religion; and that it is useless, as the ten deney which is resisted is 1nv1nclble, and is destined to triumph throughout Protestant Christendom. To all this one answer alone is offered, and it is sufficient, namely: that the attempt is grounded in truth. It in volves a contest for a mighty and all-comprehending principle, by opposmg one of the special forms in which it is now commonly transcended and violated. It is that principle, emphasized in the following re marks as scriptural and regulative, that lends impor tance to the discussion, and redeems it from the re proach of being narrow and trifling.
