Book Knowledge Discovery from Multi Sourced Data

Download or read book Knowledge Discovery from Multi Sourced Data written by Chen Ye and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses several knowledge discovery problems on multi-sourced data where the theories, techniques, and methods in data cleaning, data mining, and natural language processing are synthetically used. This book mainly focuses on three data models: the multi-sourced isomorphic data, the multi-sourced heterogeneous data, and the text data. On the basis of three data models, this book studies the knowledge discovery problems including truth discovery and fact discovery on multi-sourced data from four important properties: relevance, inconsistency, sparseness, and heterogeneity, which is useful for specialists as well as graduate students. Data, even describing the same object or event, can come from a variety of sources such as crowd workers and social media users. However, noisy pieces of data or information are unavoidable. Facing the daunting scale of data, it is unrealistic to expect humans to “label” or tell which data source is more reliable. Hence, it is crucial to identify trustworthy information from multiple noisy information sources, referring to the task of knowledge discovery. At present, the knowledge discovery research for multi-sourced data mainly faces two challenges. On the structural level, it is essential to consider the different characteristics of data composition and application scenarios and define the knowledge discovery problem on different occasions. On the algorithm level, the knowledge discovery task needs to consider different levels of information conflicts and design efficient algorithms to mine more valuable information using multiple clues. Existing knowledge discovery methods have defects on both the structural level and the algorithm level, making the knowledge discovery problem far from totally solved.

Download or read book The Way of Discovery written by Richard Gelwick and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-05-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first full exploration of the religious, ethical, and social dimensions of Michael Polanyi's philosophy, and its implications for the crisis of modern culture. Michael Polanyi developed a new way of understanding the process of discovering scientific knowledge - a theory which can alter our notions of ourselves and of existence. In 'The Way of Discovery', Richard Gelwick, a former student of the renowned scientist-turned-philosopher, presents us with a comprehensive and documented introduction to Polanyi's theory of knowledge. Michael Polanyi was born in Budapest in 1891. After a distinguished career as a physical chemist, he turned to philosophy, religion, and social sciences, becoming, by the time of his death in 1976, one of the greatest scientist-philosophers of our century. Polanyi maintained that three centuries of belief in scientific detachment had produced a crisis of culture. Working from his own experience as a scientist, and with an insight from Gestalt psychology, Polanyi asserted that objective scientific knowledge is at bottom personal knowledge - that scientists and artists establish meaning in basically the same way. His ideas call for a new way of thinking and pose a new frontier of thought, a new image of humanity

Book Real World Drug Discovery

Download or read book Real World Drug Discovery written by Robert M. Rydzewski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug discovery increasingly requires a common understanding by researchers of the many and diverse factors that go into the making of new medicines. The scientist entering the field will immediately face important issues for which his education may not have prepared him: project teams, patent law, consultants, target product profiles, industry trends, Gantt charts, target validation, pharmacokinetics, proteomics, phenotype assays, biomarkers, and many other unfamiliar topics for which a basic understanding must somehow be obtained. Even the more experienced scientist can find it frustratingly difficult to get an overview of the many factors involved in modern drug discovery and often only after years of exploring does a whole and integrated picture emerge in the mind of the researcher. Real World Drug Discovery: A Chemist’s Guide to Biotech and Pharmaceutical Research presents this kind of map of the landscape of drug discovery. In a single, readable volume it outlines processes and explains essential concepts and terms for the recent science graduate wondering what to expect in pharma or biotech, the medicinal chemist seeking a broader and more timely understanding of the industry, or the contractor or collaborator whose understanding of the commercial drug discovery process could increase the value of his contribution to it. Interviews with well-known experts in many of the fields involved, giving insightful comments from authorities on many of the sub-disciplines important to cutting edge drug discovery. Helpful suggestions gleaned from years of experience in biotech and pharma, which represents a repository drug discovery "lore" not previously available in any book. "Periodic Table of Drugs" listing current top-selling drugs arranged by target and laid out so that structural similarities and differences are plain and clear. Extensive use of diagrams to illustrate concepts like biotech startup models, preteomic profiling for target identification, Gantt charts for project planning, etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows you how to harness the power of linked data and web-scale discovery systems to manage and link widely varied content across your library collection. Libraries are increasingly using web-scale discovery systems to help clients find a wide assortment of library materials, including books, journal articles, special collections, archival collections, videos, music and open access collections. Depending on the library material catalogued, the discovery system might need to negotiate different metadata standards, such as AACR, RDA, RAD, FOAF, VRA Core, METS, MODS, RDF and more. In Managing Metadata in Web-Scale Discovery Systems, editor Louise Spiteri and a range of international experts show you how to: - maximize the effectiveness of web-scale discovery systems - provide a smooth and seamless discovery experience to your users - help users conduct searches that yield relevant results - manage the sheer volume of items to which you can provide access, so your users can actually find what they need - maintain shared records that reflect the needs, languages, and identities of culturally and ethnically varied communities - manage metadata both within, across, and outside, library discovery tools by converting your library metadata to linked open data that all systems can access - manage user generated metadata from external services such as Goodreads and LibraryThing - mine user generated metadata to better serve your users in areas such as collection development or readers’ advisory. The book will be essential reading for cataloguers, technical services and systems librarians and library and information science students studying modules on metadata, cataloguing, systems design, data management, and digital libraries. The book will also be of interest to those managing metadata in archives, museums and other cultural heritage institutions.

Book Music Recommendation and Discovery

Download or read book Music Recommendation and Discovery written by Òscar Celma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 15 years we have seen a major transformation in the world of music. - sicians use inexpensive personal computers instead of expensive recording studios to record, mix and engineer music. Musicians use the Internet to distribute their - sic for free instead of spending large amounts of money creating CDs, hiring trucks and shipping them to hundreds of record stores. As the cost to create and distribute recorded music has dropped, the amount of available music has grown dramatically. Twenty years ago a typical record store would have music by less than ten thousand artists, while today online music stores have music catalogs by nearly a million artists. While the amount of new music has grown, some of the traditional ways of ?nding music have diminished. Thirty years ago, the local radio DJ was a music tastemaker, ?nding new and interesting music for the local radio audience. Now - dio shows are programmed by large corporations that create playlists drawn from a limited pool of tracks. Similarly, record stores have been replaced by big box reta- ers that have ever-shrinking music departments. In the past, you could always ask the owner of the record store for music recommendations. You would learn what was new, what was good and what was selling. Now, however, you can no longer expect that the teenager behind the cash register will be an expert in new music, or even be someone who listens to music at all.
