Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embark on a transformative journey into the heart of Eucharistic worship with Behold, Believe, Become—where the ordinary becomes extraordinary and the Mass becomes a soul-saving, life-changing encounter with Christ, our Eucharistic Lord. In Behold, Believe, Become, Timothy P. O’Malley, a distinguished leader in the Eucharistic Revival movement and bestselling author of Becoming Eucharistic People and Real Presence, shows you how to see differently—through newly formed habits of contemplation—fifteen ordinary, physical things that the Church uses at Mass to point us toward Christ. You will explore layers of meaning found in noble doors and stained-glass windows, sunlight and water, oil and fire, altars and church pews, and bread and wine become Body and Blood. O’Malley helps you see how each element tells us something about who Christ is and who we are to become as Christian people. Inspired by the towering genius of the twentieth-century liturgical movement, Fr. Romano Guardini (1865–1968), O’Malley offers an unconventional walk through the Mass, highlighting that “matter matters.” This book doesn’t delve into the intricate history of Eucharistic Prayers or the doctrinal meaning of various words and actions. Instead, it provides a unique exploration of the material stuff of the Mass that we encounter from the time we enter the church until the time we depart at the end. Whether you’re seeking personal growth or exploring this journey with a small group, Behold, Believe, Become is the perfect companion, providing brief online videos featuring Rachel and Jason Bulman of "Meet the Bulmans" and chapter-ending reflection questions to help connect your everyday life to the celebration of Mass. And for those craving a communal experience, a small-group leader’s guide and parish planning kit make this an invaluable resource for parishes, schools, and other Catholic communities. Are you ready to witness the Mass in a new light? Behold, Believe, Become is your key to unlocking a richer, more meaningful Eucharistic experience.

Book The Holy Mass

  • Author : Adrienne von Speyr
  • Publisher : Ignatius Press
  • Release : 1999-01-01
  • ISBN : 0898707307
  • Pages : 78 pages

Download or read book The Holy Mass written by Adrienne von Speyr and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This meditation on the Mass by the mystic Von Speyr contains many penetrating insights, particularly about the nature of the Mass as sacrifice--of Christ, of his priest, and of every believer united in and with the entire Church--expressed with a poetic layering of concepts and images that is at once complex and lucid, dense and transparent. The meditation rewards the present-day reader's effort with a fresh and palpable sense that the real truth of the Church's constant re-presentation, re-enactment of Christ's "sacrifice once offered" transcends not only the nearly half-a-century since Von Speyer's meditation, but all time --time which is itself sanctified precisely through the endless repetition of the Sacrament of unity that is the Holy Mass.

Book Heaven on Earth The Order and Meaning of Mass

Download or read book Heaven on Earth The Order and Meaning of Mass written by Ralph Barnett and published by eSoup Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-07 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “We’re living through the greatest loss of faith in the history of the Catholic Church,” a refrain reverberating thru Catholic America. Likely, you are familiar with the statistics: · 25% percent decline in Mass attendance. · 15% of churches closed and/or consolidated. · 65% of Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence. · Catholicism, the largest Christian creed followed closely by fallen away Catholics. America’s religious decline is not new. Experts claim, “Christianity has been on decline since the removal of prayer from public schools in 1962.” Catholic school enrollment declined concurrently. Yet prayer was not removed from Catholic schools. Predictably, Mass attendance followed. What changed? Catholic authorities proffered explanations and recommendations; none of which stemmed the tide . . . a sure sign the root cause was not rightly identified. As a cradle-Catholic father, grandfather, and amateur student of Mass, I offer an assertion supported by my love of Catholicism, logic . . . and a book! “What changed” was the equivalent of removing the pillar of prayer from public schools . . . Mass was removed from Catholic catechesis - school, CCD, RCIA, adult formation, ambo, and domestic church. A cursory look at a Baltimore Catechism, the 1950-60s field manual for Catholics, reveals a 30-page segment, “Catechism of the Mass,” immersing students in liturgical details. A cursory look at current Catholic curricula reveals a paucity of information on Mass ranging from a few paragraphs in school texts to “take home” trifolds for CCD, RCIA, etc. Is Mass that important? Did you know Mass . . . · Is the most perfect way for man to praise and give thanks to God? · Is the only sacrifice perfect, pleasing, and acceptable to God? · Is the most sacred function of the Church, surpassing all others in efficacy? · Is the Church’s greatest prayer? · Is an offering for the whole Mystical Body of Christ? · Is the highest form of prayer for the faithful? · Is the Church’s #1 effort to save souls? · Is the same sacrifice Christ made on the Cross? · Is the perfect answer to prayer as it brings mercy and salvation Christ won for us? · Is required attendance every Sunday and six Holy Days a year but Communion only once? · Is the Source and Summit of our Faith? Seemingly, Mass is the answer to everything integral to Catholicism. Why is it not taught in Catholic education settings? How do we reverse the tide? Pope John Paul II: “Mass is Heaven on Earth. What we celebrate on Earth is a mysterious participation in the heavenly liturgy.” If Catholics realized Mass is tantamount to Heaven on Earth, would we be witnessing “the greatest loss of faith in the history of the Catholic Church?” Emphatically, “No.” As one Priest opined, “We’d have to double Masses and they’d be SRO.” We would witness the greatest flood of student enrollment and Mass attendance since the inception of Catholicism in America. We would have to double Catholic school classes and reopen shuttered schools and churches. Catholics must re-assess school, CCD, RCIA, adult formation and domestic church catechesis to make space for a deep dive into Mass. To fulfill the need, I submit a book series, “Heaven on Earth: The Order and Meaning of Mass:” · “Heaven on Earth” second edition text for adults. · “Curriculum” for students and educators. · “Workbook” of lesson reviews for students. “Heaven on Earth” is not a theological or academic treatise but a user-friendly, step-by-step guide to Mass for the faithful unlike anything available elsewhere. Author’s Promise: “You will never ever go to church, attend Mass, or receive Communion the same way again.”

In The Power of Daily Mass, he reveals how the Eucharist is the center of his daily life and calls him to witness the Real Presence of Christ to others in his work and relationships. Ghezzi shows how frequent participation in the Mass offers participants courage and hope to face everyday challenges, provides direction and encouragement through the scriptures, allows time to reflect and talk to the Lord, and is an opportunity to intercede for family and friends. Using quotations from saints and testimonies from fellow daily Mass attendees, Ghezzi encourages Catholics to grow closer to Jesus and receive Christ’s power for daily Christian living through the Eucharist. Ghezzi highlights how more frequent participation in weekday Mass is a wonderful way to grow in love for the Lord and receive the guidance for living that can only come from scripture and the Eucharist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catholic University of America Press is proud to present the third volume in its Sayings of the Fathers of the Church series. Featuring esteemed scholars and writers compiling material from our acclaimed Fathers of the Church volumes, each title is devoted to select areas of theology. The inaugural volumes covered the Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Last Things, and now we turn to The Holy Mass. The documents of early Christianity are rich in mentions of the Mass and its component parts. Sometimes they’re detailed descriptions, sometimes quick allusions. In this volume Mike Aquilina, a popular author on early Christianity, takes readers step by step through the Mass, from the Sign of the Cross through the Dismissal, illuminating the way with the words of the Fathers. Along the way readers encounter familiar rites, words, and gestures, but also familiar complaints — about long homilies, bad singing, liturgical abuses, and distracted congregations. The Holy Mass is divided into chapters based on the parts of the Mass known to modern Catholics of the Roman Rite. The Mass did not follow this sequence through the entirety of the era of the Fathers. Gregory the Great moved the position of the Lord’s Prayer. There were geographic variants for the placement of the Sign of Peace. Some ancient liturgies lacked a specific penitential rite — though all the liturgies had a penitential dimension to their prayers. Mike Aquilina’s introduction provides historical context and describes the rich development of the liturgy through the Church’s first few centuries. A foreword by Thomas Weinandy, a member of the Vatican’s International Theological Commission, speaks of the relevance of this material for worshipers today.

Book Bread of Life Cup of Salvation

Download or read book Bread of Life Cup of Salvation written by John Francis Baldovin and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2003 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bread of Life, Cup of Salvation is an invitation to a deeper appreciation for the celebration of the Mass and a greater conviction of its importance for our ordinary living-out of Christian faith in daily life. Taking into account the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the new edition of the General Instruction on the Roman Missal, Fr. John Baldovin, S.J., centers his lucid commentary on the Mass around the most recent official documents and provides an up-to-date survey of the historical development of the Mass from the New Testament to the present. Clear, concise, and accessible, Bread of Life, Cup of Salvation is an informative and powerful reflection on the meaning of the Eucharist for us today. This book responds to questions such as What are the orgins of the Mass? How did the Mass develop into what we know today? Why do we have several readings from Scripture at every Mass? Why do we always read a passage from the Gospels last? Why is the Eucharistic Prayer called the center and highpoint of the celebration of the Eucharist? What difference does it make if communion is distributed from the tabernacle or consecrated at the Mass at which people are receiving? Why do we have more than one Eucharistic Prayer? Is it important that people are offered communion in both kinds--the Body and the Blood of Christ? Why did the Mass get its popular name from the dismissal (missa)? Why was it important to recover the exchange of peace?

Book The Mass of the Early Christians 2nd Edition

Download or read book The Mass of the Early Christians 2nd Edition written by Mike Aquilina and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2007-05-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the first Christians believe about the Eucharist? How did they follow Jesus' command, "Do this in remembrance of me"? How did they celebrate the Lord's Day? What would they recognize in today's Mass? The answers may surprise you. In The Mass of the Early Christians, respected author, scholar, and television host Mike Aquilina reveals the Church's most ancient Eucharistic beliefs and practices. Using the words of the early Christians themselves -- from many documents and inscriptions -- Aquilina traces the history of the Mass from Jesus' lifetime through the fourth century. That the Mass stood at the center of the Church's life is evident in the Scriptures, as well as the earliest Christian sermons, letters, artwork, tombstones, and architecture. Even the pagans bore witness to the Mass in the records of their persecutions. These legacies from the early Church bear witness to the same worship Catholics know today: the altar, the priest, the chalice of wine, the bread, the Sign of the Cross ... the "Lord, have mercy" ... the "Holy, holy, holy" ... and the Communion.

Book Some Elements of the Mass

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rev. Fr. Gregory O. Okorobia
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2009-12-29
  • ISBN : 1450014585
  • Pages : 65 pages

Download or read book Some Elements of the Mass written by Rev. Fr. Gregory O. Okorobia and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-12-29 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mass has been at the center of Catholic worship since the day of it's institution on that first Holy Thursday when Jesus Christ took bread, blessed and broke it, and took the cup filled with wine, gave them to his disciples saying: "Take and eat, this is my body...", "take and drink, this is my blood". Many people who attend this worship observe many ritual actions performed by the priest, and some prayers said both by the celebrant and the people, without knowing why they do and say them. "Some Elements of the Mass" is a brief explanation of these different ritual actions and prayers that make up the Roman Catholic Mass. It tells the reader the origin of some of these ritual actions and prayers, and why they are placed at their present positions within the structure of the Roman Catholic Mass. Both those coming in newly into the Catholic Church and 'cradle Catholics' have found "Some Elements of the Mass very enlightening and educative. Like Most Reverend Robert F. Vasa said in the foreword: "The booklet is written, not for scholars, but rather for the "common man" and as such provides a very good introduction to the Mass".
