Download or read book Ren Descartes The Complete Correspondence in English Translation Volume I written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-21 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: René Descartes: The Complete Correspondence in English Translation is the first complete English translation of the extant correspondence of the polymath René Descartes, who excelled in all areas of philosophy, the sciences, and mathematics. The translation is based on the best available editions, modified by several other sources. It is accompanied by an editorial apparatus consisting of cross-references and brief biographies of the correspondents. Descartes' correspondence elaborates his views, providing a crucial resource for students, teachers, and scholars in philosophy, history of philosophy, and history of science and mathematics. Volume I presents correspondence from the period 1619 to 1638. The letters begin with exchanges between Descartes and the physico-mathematician Isaac Beeckman, the essayist Guez de Balzac, the lens maker Jean Ferrier, and Descartes' future primary correspondent Marin Mersenne. It includes letters to high ranking Oratorians. One can also see the beginnings of Descartes' relations with Constantijn Huygens, who will be Descartes' other chief correspondent. One can also trace the developments of Descartes' early unpublished works on metaphysics, physics, and human biology, together with his reaction to the condemnation of Galileo by the Catholic Church. The letters show developments in Descartes' construction and publication of the Discourse on Method, together with the essays Dioptrics, Meteors, and Geometry. This results in an explosion of letters from and to various critics such as the professor of medicine Vopiscus Fortunatus Plemp, the astrologer Jean Baptiste Morin, the mathematicians Pierre Petit, Gilles Personne de Roberval, Pierre de Fermat, and many others.

Download or read book Augustine s Invention of the Inner Self written by Phillip Cary and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Phillip Cary argues that Augustine invented the concept of the self as a private inner space-a space into which one can enter and in which one can find God. Although it has often been suggested that Augustine in some way inaugurated the Western tradition of inwardness, this is the first study to pinpoint what was new about Augustine's philosophy of inwardness and situate it within a narrative of his intellectual development and his relationship to the Platonist tradition. Augustine invents the inner self, Cary argues, in order to solve a particular conceptual problem. Augustine is attracted to the Neoplatonist inward turn, which located God within the soul, yet remains loyal to the orthodox Catholic teaching that the soul is not divine. He combines the two emphases by urging us to turn "in then up"--to enter the inner world of the self before gazing at the divine Light above the human mind. Cary situates Augustine's idea of the self historically in both the Platonist and the Christian traditions. The concept of private inner self, he shows, is a development within the history of the Platonist concept of intelligibility or intellectual vision, which establishes a kind of kinship between the human intellect and the divine things it sees. Though not the only Platonist in the Christian tradition, Augustine stands out for his devotion to this concept of intelligibility and his willingness to apply it even to God. This leads him to downplay the doctrine that God is incomprehensible, as he is convinced that it is natural for the mind's eye, when cleansed of sin, to see and understand God. In describing Augustine's invention of the inner self, Cary's fascinating book sheds new light on Augustine's life and thought, and shows how Augustine's position developed into the more orthodox Augustine we know from his later writings.
Download or read book The invention of the bicycle written by Jordi Nadal and published by Plataforma. This book was released on 2021-01-27 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1815 the volcano Tambora, in Indonesia, began erupting bringing about an unprecedented crisis throughout the northern hemisphere. Tens of thousands of people succumbed to hunger and disease. Horses, the standard form of transportation at that time, were not luckier, as their owners couldn't afford the luxury of feeding them appropriately. Karl Von Drais, the famous German inventor, realized that this crisis represented an opportunity. He discovered that the laufmaschine, one of his most recent inventions, was the means to go from place to place that the situation required. Today this machine is known as the bicycle. The Covid-19 crisis has made it evident that we are facing one of the most serious challenges we have experienced as a society. Faced with a situation that nobody could have foreseen, there's no choice but to give the best of ourselves, demonstrating our capacity to come to grips with it. With this mindset of living with adversity, Jordi Nadal encourages us to take on the challenges that the future holds, with a measured degree of alarm, with the aim of getting round these difficulties as best possible.
