This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 1293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On his second expedition to the Pacific, in the years 1772-5, Captain James Cook made a voyage which, in the annals of exploration, is unsurpassed for grandeur of design and execution and for variety of experience. Cook traversed the Indian and Pacific Oceans in high latitudes, demonstrating that the supposed Southern continent could not extend north of 60°. Cook three times crossed the Antarctic Circle reaching his furthest south in 71° 10 ́, and he proved himself a master of navigation in ice. In the Pacific his discoveries or rediscoveries included the Tonga Islands, Easter Island, the Marquesas, the New Hebrides and New Caledonia, with the sub-antarctic islands of South Georgia and the South Sandwich group. Captain Furneaux, commanding the consort ship, examined the coasts of Tasmania. The written and graphic records left by Cook himself and by his officers, by the astronomer William Wales and the artist William Hodges, by the naturalists J.R. and George Forster are remarkable in their volume and vitality. The editor, Dr J.C. Beaglehole, here prints the full text of Cook’s own journal, constructed from two holograph MSS and several MS copies, and a great part of Wales’s journal. This facsimile edition reprints the edition of 1961 along with the Addenda and Corrigenda published in 1969. The illustrations originally in colour are reproduced in black-and-white, the fold-outs divided to fit on separate pages, and the volume split into two parts.

Download or read book The Discovery of Everything the Creation of Nothing written by Jim Robert Bader and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The questions have been with us since the dim, dark dusk of early humanity. Who are we? How did we get here? Who is in charge? In The Discovery of Everything, the Creation of Nothing, author Jim Robert Bader communicates his personal philosophy on these age-old enigmas as they apply to modern society. Intended as a primer for the mind of the layman, The Discovery of Everything, the Creation of Nothing presents a manifesto of the soul that insists the truth is not only out there, but easily accessible to anyone. Based on years of research and observation, Bader distills the complexities and addresses relevant topics from an “everyman” perspective by pondering the nature of the universe. He reflects on the thoughts and discoveries of others to bring knowledge to the common man. In The Discovery of Everything, the Creation of Nothing, Bader offers a new way of understanding the world. He confronts old assumptions, and he challenges the traditional way of thinking to better cope with and comprehend the nature of the world around us.

Download or read book England and the Discovery of America 1481 1620 written by David B. Quinn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, England and the Discovery of America places the early explorations of the English in North America in the broad context of 15th and 16th century history. Marshalling evidence that cannot be pushed aside and sifting a mass of fascinating detail (including problems of cartography and the Vinland Map controversy), Professor Quinn presents circumstantial indications pointing to 1481 as the date or the discovery of America by Bristol voyagers – fishermen seeking new sources of cod, and merchant sailors with maps carrying promise of unexploited Atlantic islands. Whereas England did little to follow up her early lead, Quinn demonstrates that English initiatives from the 1580s onward, though slow, were of great importance. He brings to life the men involved in a variety of rash and heroic experiments in colonization and casts new light on their fates. He makes it clear that it was this very profusion of trial and error and trail again, as well as the conviction that settlement in temperate latitudes in North America could be effective if tenaciously enough sought, that enabled the English to strike and maintain routes in their new American world. This book will be of interest to students of English history, American history, colonial history and naval history.
Download or read book Maritime Exploration in the Age of Discovery 1415 1800 written by Ronald S. Love and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-09-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite earlier naval expeditions undertaken for reasons of diplomacy or trade, it wasn't until the early 1400s that European maritime explorers established sea routes through most of the globe's inhabited regions, uniting a divided earth into a single system of navigation. From the early Portuguese and Spanish quests for gold and glory, to later scientific explorations of land and culture, this new understanding of the world's geography created global trade, built empires, defined taste and alliances of power, and began the journey toward the cultural, political, and economic globalization in which we live today. Ronald Love's engaging narrative chapters guide the reader from Marco Polo's exploration of the Mongol empire to Ferdinand Magellan's circumnavigation of the globe, the search for a Northern Passage, Henry Hudson's voyage to Greenland, the discovery of Tahiti, the perils of scurvy, mutiny, and warring empires, and the eventual extension of Western influence into almost every corner of the globe. Biographies and primary documents round out the work.
