Book Creating Culture Vultures The Jersey Arts Membership Program

Download or read book Creating Culture Vultures The Jersey Arts Membership Program written by Cynthia Barthole and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study, through surveys I conducted as the program's Membership Associate in November 2009 (exclusive of new members), identified the Discover Jersey Arts (DJA) program's member motivations to build appropriate revenue-based membership levels to enhance the current free-based membership model. Most of these member motivations were identified as egoistic, meaning members enjoy the "perks" of free membership, however, would consider paying for membership if the benefits were "worth it." Adding revenue-based levels will need to be carefully introduced and explained to ease current members into it. The program was approved and will be adopted by DJA. With the decline of public support, nonprofit organizations need to look elsewhere for revenue in which membership dues can be a viable source. This case study attempts to serve as a guideline on how to analyze constituents' needs when building a membership program.

Book excerpt: "This publication accompanies the first survey of Willie Cole's work from the late 1980s to the present. Cole was born and raised in New Jersey and has resided in the state his entire life. The exhibition and catalogue focus on Cole's mixed media sculptural works made from salvaged irons, blow dryers, ironing boards, high-heeled shoes, lawn jockeys, and bicycle parts; paintings and drawings made of iron scorch marks, and prints. Cole's consumer and domestic objects assume the appearance of objects from another time, culture, or place, transformed into powerful cultural and spiritual evocations referencing African and global culture. His art is solidly based in studious appreciation rather than humorous imitation or ironic appropriation." "The exhibition was organized by Patterson Sims. In this catalogue, Sims offers a broad introduction to Cole and detailed descriptions of the works included in the show. The text traces Cole's thinking, process, and evolution and the influence of his life-long residency in New Jersey. This catalogue also includes an insightful interview between the artist and Leslie King-Hammond, Dean of Graduate Studies, Maryland Institute College of Art; a short essay by Lowery Stokes Sims, President of the Studio Museum in Harlem, related to Cole's pivotal 1988-89 artist residency there; and an extensive chronology and professional history of the artist."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Poetry Life written by Baron Wormser and published by Cavankerry Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baron Wormser brings to life the immense force poetry can have in people's lives. In stories funny, tender, sad, and edgy, the narrators register how poetry has changed how they see themselves, how they live, and what they care about. As it bends genres by adapting aspects of fiction, biography, essay and monologue, The Poetry Life shows how poetry can be lightning in the soul. "Baron Wormser has pulled off a miraculous feat--he has written a collection of stories that reveals the absolute necessity of poetry in our lives. His prose style is riveting, and his characters are as diverse as a phone book. Each voice conjures up a passionate portrait of inner life, telling us--through episodes both comic and tragic--that the world of the deceased poet remains eternally relevant to our own." --Clint McCown, author of The Weatherman: A Novel "'Poetry,' Baron Wormser writes, 'is about generosity.' So too are these ten stories you hold in your hands. They are about generosity. And mystery. And loneliness. And life. They are about how poetry helps us 'stay in our skins.' You will fall in love with these stories and with the ten poets who appear in them. What Baron Wormser says about William Carlos Williams, I say about him here, 'He nailed it.'" --Ann Hood, author of The Knitting Circle: A Novel "A book of stories not about poets but driven by the presence of poetry and the shadows of poets: madness undoubtedly. But the best kind of madness! With this book, Baron Wormser invites us to reconsider the connection between poetry and our lives, to remember that we really do live hungry for inner vision, for small insights that can save us from the slag heap of goofdom and pointlessness. It's a wonderful book. It's the kind of stuff that makes you want to stay in the world. " --Tim Seibles, author of Buffalo Head Solos

This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a poignant past/present narrative this heartfelt and inspiring coming of age novel explores a young woman's integration of a work/life balance through art, and the effects of an artistic life on one's psyche. Isabella is a young émigré from the USSR who discovers her artistic talent as a way to cope with culture shock and escape from her traditional criticizing Jewish mother. Lost and in America, Isabella searches for a true home all over the world for years. She lives in Paris and Rome, ventures out to Australia, returns to Russia in search for her tribe, all the while recording these new locales and her feelings about them with her brush. It is only after losing her passion under the strains of money, romance and indulgence that she realizes that her painting practice has always been her home base, that restorative space of solace, balance and peace. When she finally rekindles her relationship with art, it helps her tackle her damaging relationships, caustic career and the demands of present-day motherhood. Can she redefine her many personas in a way that keeps her soul and art alive, even as she struggles to balance the imperative to create with the desire to sell? As a mother, will she be able to forgive her mother for taking her away from her life at its launch, and reconcile with this most important person in her life? This is a book about escape, sacrifice and difficult choices. In our time of intense struggles to stay balanced, it's a story that would empower any mother, career woman, immigrant to America or creative, an intimate narrative about a soul striving for balance in life, through art.
