Book Introduction to Saint Helena

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Helena is an isolated volcanic island in the South Atlantic Ocean, located approximately 1,200 miles west of the coast of Africa. The island was discovered by the Portuguese in 1502 and was later occupied by the British in 1659, becoming an important British outpost during the 19th century. Saint Helena is known for being the final resting place of the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled on the island from 1815 until his death in 1821. Today, the island is a British Overseas Territory with a population of approximately 4,000 inhabitants. Despite its remote location, Saint Helena has a rich history and culture. The island's isolation has contributed to the development of a distinct culture and language known as "Saints English", which is a mixture of English, Portuguese, and African dialects. In addition to Napoleon's tomb, the island is also home to a number of historic landmarks, including the Jacob's Ladder staircase, which has 699 steps, and the 16th century Plantation House, which serves as the residence of the island's governor. Today, Saint Helena's economy is largely dependent on tourism, as visitors come to explore the island's natural beauty and rich history.

In 1875, Helena became the territorial capital of Montana, and in 1894 it outpolled Anaconda in a statewide election to become the permanent state capital. Postcard images captured many of Helena's landmarks and events over the past century, including the magnificent Broadwater Hotel and Natatorium, pre-urban-renewal Main Street, and the ravages of the 1935 earthquake. Book The Secret Diaries Of Miss Anne Lister Vol 1

Download or read book The Secret Diaries Of Miss Anne Lister Vol 1 written by Anne Lister and published by Virago. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the extraordinary diaries of the real Anne Lister: the inspiration for Gentleman Jack and Emma Donoghue's new novel Learned By Heart 'Engaging, revealing, at times simply astonishing' SARAH WATERS '[Anne Lister's] sense of self, and self-awareness, is what makes her modern to us . . . The diaries gave me courage' JEANETTE WINTERSON 'The Lister diaries are the Dead Sea Scrolls of lesbian history' EMMA DONOGHUE When this volume of Anne Lister's diaries was first published in 1988, it was hailed as a vital piece of lost lesbian history. The editor, Helena Whitbread, had spent years painstakingly researching and transcribing Lister's extensive journals, much of which were written in an elaborate code - what Lister called her 'crypthand', which allowed her to record her life in intimate, and at times, explicit, detail. Until then, Anne Lister's lesbianism had been supressed or hinted at; this was the first time her story had been told. Anne Lister defied the role of nineteenth century womanhood: she was bold, fiercely independent, a landowner, industrialist, traveller and lesbian - a woman who lived her life on her own terms. These diaries include the years 1816-1824. The second volume, continuing Anne's story, THE SECRET DIARIES OF MISS ANNE LISTER: NO PRIEST BUT LOVE, is now available.

Book excerpt: A Roman tribune is captured and presented to the enemy’s priestess—who holds his life in her hands . . . Strong, proud, honorable—Marcus Livius Tullio embodied the values of Rome. Captured on the high seas and brought to the Temple of Kybele, he was drawn to the woman who gave him refuge. Fierce, beautiful, determined—Helena despised all that Rome stood for. In sheltering Tullio, she had to subdue her awareness of him—or she might confess all! The soldier’s strength and nobility tempted her to lean on him, but she knew that to succumb would be to betray her people. . . . Praise for Michelle Styles “Sexual tension, nonstop action, and spice.” —RT Book Reviews

Book excerpt: The extraordinary story of Stefania Podgorska, a Polish teenager who chose bravery and humanity by hiding thirteen Jews in her attic during WWII, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Sharon Cameron - now a Reese's Book Club YA Pick! One knock at the door, and Stefania has a choice to make... It is 1943, and for four years, sixteen-year-old Stefania has been working for the Diamant family in their grocery store in Przemysl, Poland, singing her way into their lives and hearts. She has even made a promise to one of their sons, Izio -- a betrothal they must keep secret since she is Catholic and the Diamants are Jewish. But everything changes when the German army invades Przemysl. The Diamants are forced into the ghetto, and Stefania is alone in an occupied city, the only one left to care for Helena, her six-year-old sister. And then comes the knock at the door. Izio's brother Max has jumped from the train headed to a death camp. Stefania and Helena make the extraordinary decision to hide Max, and eventually twelve more Jews. Then they must wait, every day, for the next knock at the door, the one that will mean death. When the knock finally comes, it is two Nazi officers, requisitioning Stefania's house for the German army. With two Nazis below, thirteen hidden Jews above, and a little sister by her side, Stefania has one more excruciating choice to make. This remarkable tale of courage and humanity, based on a true story, is now a Reese's Book Club YA Pick!
