Book Current Trends in Cryobiology

Download or read book Current Trends in Cryobiology written by Audrey U. Smith and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past 20 years there have been amazing developments in low temperature physics, engineering, and biology. They form part of the very rapid post-war growth in pure and applied sciences of every kind. During this period several branches of biology including immunology, molecular biology and, of course, cryobiology, have split off from their parent disciplines. One result of this splintering has been the development of separate jargons used by the specialists and sometimes incomprehensible to those working in closely allied fields. The pure physicists, chemists, and the applied scientists, including physicians, surgeons, and pathologists, find the new jargons particularly baffling. We have attempted in this monograph to present to cryogenic engineers a picture of cryobiologists and their problems using as few strange technical words as possible. We hope that this book will help to bridge the gap which has already formed between them in spite of the opportunities for collaboration in many projects. We hope that it may also be useful to scientific research workers and postgraduate students of many kinds united only by curiosity about cryobiology. We are very much indebted to Dr. K. Mendelssohn, who insti gated us to produce a monograph and who reassured us that cryogenic engineers are as keen to understand the current trends in biology, and particularly in cryobiology, as we are to enlist their help. We have had much help in preparing this book.

Book Clinical Applications of Cryobiology

Download or read book Clinical Applications of Cryobiology written by Barry J. Fuller and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-08-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a state-of-the-art summary of the applications of low temperature to clinical situations, together with details of the underlying principles of biology. It provides specific information for the clinicians and research workers in a number of areas of current interest and attempts to provide a unifying theme of cryobiology of interest and value to those researching a clinical problem. Specific topics discussed include the effects of low temperatures on mammalian systems in the absence of ice and how the changes can be modulated to achieve desired results; low temperature storage of tissues and organs for transplantation in the liquid state; the effects of whole body hypothermia in man and how it relates to mammal hibernation; problems associated with ice formation and the subsequent freezing of cells and tissues; cryopreservation of blood cells, reproductive cells, and tissues, such as the skin and cornea. Other interesting issues featured include the developments in cryopreservation of large, highly-organized structures and the destructive powers of ice formation in cryosurgery of diseased tissues.

Book excerpt: While it is barely 50 years since the first reliable reports of the recovery of living cells frozen to cryogenic temperatures, there has been tremendous growth in the use of cryobiology in medicine, agriculture, horticulture, forestry, and the conservation of endangered or economically important species. As the first major text on cryobiology in the genomic era, Life in the Frozen State describes the current understanding of how living cells and complex organisms survive very low temperatures. Leading world experts combine fundamental theory and practice across a spectrum of species and applications to evaluate how cryobiology can benefit humanity. Chapters encompass disciplines ranging from mathematical modeling and biophysics, to the molecular biology of stress gene expression and the clinical banking of cells and tissues. This book provides a unique opportunity to explore the subject in a multidisciplinary context, which has historically been the key to realizing some of the most exciting advances in low temperature research. Features Integrates fundamental theory and practice across a broad range of species and applications Discusses cryobiology within a multidisciplinary context Emphasizes how the current knowledge of cryobiology can be applied to benefit humanity through health care and conservation

Book Current Frontiers in Cryobiology

Download or read book Current Frontiers in Cryobiology written by Igor Katkov and published by IntechOpen. This book was released on 2012-03-09 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost a decade has passed since the last textbook on the science of cryobiology, Life in the Frozen State, was published. Recently, there have been some serious tectonic shifts in cryobiology which were perhaps not seen on the surface but will have a profound effect on both the future of cryobiology and the development of new cryopreservation methods. We feel that it is time to revise the previous paradigms and dogmas, discuss the conceptually new cryobiological ideas, and introduce the recently emerged practical protocols for cryopreservation. The present books, "Current Frontiers in Cryobiology" and "Current Frontiers in Cryopreservation" will serve the purpose. This is a global effort by scientists from 27 countries from all continents and we hope it will be interesting to a wide audience.
