Book excerpt: The genesis of evil. The book of Genesis recites the beginnings of the cosmos and its inhabitants. It also reveals the beginning of evil. Before long, evil infests God's good creation. From there, good and evil coexist and drive the plot of Genesis. In Evil in Genesis, Ingrid Faro uncovers how the Bible's first book presents the meaning of evil. Faro conducts a thorough examination of evil on lexical, exegetical, conceptual, and theological levels. This focused analysis allows the Hebrew terminology to be nuanced and permits Genesis' own distinct voice to be heard. Genesis presents evil as the taking of something good and twisting it for one's own purposes rather than enjoying it how God intended. Faro illuminates the perspective of Genesis on a range of themes, including humanity's participation in evil, evil's consequences, and God's responses to evil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Book of Genesis For the right comprehension of the Prophetical Blessings of Jacob, a new rendering was therefore indispensable. Should the author thereby succeed in rectifying any popular errors springing from that Version, he shall consider that he has not labored in vain; but if otherwise, he shall feel happy to be convinced that none exist. The author intends to continue the Discourses to the end of the Pentateuch; but his doing so will of course depend on the encouragement this, the first volume, will receive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Discourses on the Book of Genesis: Interspersed With Practical Reflections The foundation of this vast fabric is laid in an adequate cause - elohim, The Almighty. Nothing else would bear it. Man, if he attempt to find an adequate cause for what is, to the overlooking of God, shall but weary him self with very vanity. The writer makes use of the plural term Elohim, which yet is joined to singular verbs. This has been generally thought to intimate the doctrine of a plurality in the unity of the Godhead. It is certain, the scriptures speak of the Son, and Holy Spirit, as concerned in creation, as well as the Father.] Nor can I on any other supposition affix a consistent meaning to such language as that which after wards occurs Let us make man in our image, after our likeness - Behold, the man is become like one of us. The account given by Moses relates not to the whole creation, but merely to what immediately concerns us to know. God made angels; but nothing is said of them. The moon is called one of the greater lights, not as to what it is in itself, but what it is to us. The scriptures are written not to gratify curiosity, but to nourish faith. They do not stop to tell you how, nor to answer a number of questions which might be asked; but tell you so much as is necessary, and no more. Book The Book of Genesis Vol 1

Download or read book The Book of Genesis Vol 1 written by Robert S. Candlish and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis, Vol. 1: Expounded in a Series of Discourses The view taken in this Lecture I hold to be important, not only in its practical and spiritual bearings, on which I chiefly dwell, but also in relation to some of the scientific questions which have been supposed to be here involved. It lifts, as I think, the divine record out of and above these human entanglements, and presents it, apart from all discoveries of successive ages, in the broad and general aspect which it was designed from the first and all along to wear, as unfolding the Creator's mind in the orderly subordination of the several parts of his creation to one another, with special reference to his intended dealings with the race of man. On this account I ask attention to what otherwise might appear to somo to be an irrelevant metaphysical conceit. It is proposed, then, to inquire what is implied in our really believing, as a matter of revelation, the fact of the creation. This may seem a very needless inquiry, in reference to a fact so easily understood. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." "The worlds were framed by the word of God." Can any thing be easier than to comprehend and believe this great truth thus clearly revealed? Who can be at a loss to know what is meant by believing it?
