Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Positive Religion Paul, and built up of the holy lives of countless men and women who, seeking to deny themselves and to purify their lives from every selfish thought, became a leavening influence in the world around them, a spiritual power not resting on the force of armies and the ordinances of magistrates, but on the inward force of conscience. We commemorate the mediaeval rulers, Charlemagne, Alfred, or Godfrey, who, uniting Roman energy with Chris tian faith, created in chivalry the new ideal of manhood, the loyal sense of honour, the reverent protection of weakness; and who saved the Western world from the barbaric floods that threatened to overwhelm it. Book Discourses on the Philosophy of Religion

Download or read book Discourses on the Philosophy of Religion written by George Ripley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Philosophy of Religion: Addresses to Doubters Who Wish to BelieveThe fears which are entertained by many, who are not theolo gians by profession, with regard to the effect of free discussion, often arises from the want of an intelligent and vigorous faith. They dread lest the progress of inquiry should bring to light some hidden defect in the grounds of our religion. They are, in fact, doubters, though they know it not. They wish to believe. They cannot bear to hear a word said which implies that any cherished view is wrong. But this arises from a lurking suspicion that there is something unsound in the fabric of their faith. To such minds these discourses are addressed. I would frankly point out to them the principles on which myown faith is built; and I cannot but'hope that theirs 'will gain strength by the exposition. The interests of speculative science and of practical piety appear to me so intimately blended, that it would cause me deep sorrow to think that I had laid a rude hand on either. What I have recently published explains the negative side of my faith. I here give the positive; and one should read both the statements in connexion, in order to perceive the complete whole in, which I venture to think my views exist in my own mind.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Series of Discourses, on the Principles of Religious Belief: As Connected With Human Happiness and Improvement It has been my design, in the following discourses, to exhibit a view both of the evidences and the effects of religious belief, somewhat more simple and popular than has usually been attempted; and without fatiguing the reader with controversy, or overwhelming him with facts, to fix his attention upon those great principles, both in the constitution of man, and in the visible administration of Providence, that seem to lead most directly to a sense of the truth and the benefits of religion. Much has been written, both recently and in older times, upon this most important of all subjects; and the grounds of our faith have been vindicated by many eminent divines and philosophers, with a force of reasoning and an extent of learning, to which nothing, it is probable, can now be added or replied. During these years he has taken an active part by voice or pen in nearly every public discussion, or controversy, that seemed to touch on religious theory or social ethics. Book Discourses on the Nature of Religion

Download or read book Discourses on the Nature of Religion written by Orville Dewey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on the Nature of Religion: And on Commerce and Business; With Some Occasional Discourses The world, which is appointed for our temporary dwelling place, was made for this end. The whole creation' around us, is to the soul, a subject and a ministering creation. The mighty globe itself, with all its glorious apparatus and furniture, is but a theatre for the care of the soul, the theatre Of its redemption. This vast universe is but a means. But look at the earth alone. Why was it made such as it is? Its fruit ful soils, its rich valleys, its mountain-tops, and its roll ing oceans; its humbler scenes, clothed with beauty and light, good even in the sight of their Maker, fair - fair to mortal eyes - why were they given? They were not given for mere sustenance and supply; for much less would have sufficed for that end. They need not have been so beautiful to have answered that end. They could have spared their verdure and flow ers and fragrance, and still have yielded sustenance. The groves might never have waved in the breeze but have stood in the rigidity Of an iron forest; the hills might not have been moulded into forms Of beauty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Series of Discourses, on the Principles of Religious Belief, as Connected With Human Happiness and Improvement Such is the object of these discourses: of the execution the public must judge. I have ven tured to give them the title Of a series be cause, though they were written at different times, and without any precise view to their present arrangement, they seem to have such a mutual coherence and dependency, as to be read with advantage in the 'order in which. They now stand. At all events, it is hoped, they will appear to possess at least that uniformity of thought and design which (to use the words of the admirable Butler) will always be found in the writings of the same person, when he writes with simplicity, and in earnest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Public Occasions The kind of knowledge, the want of which is here said to be not good, we take to be - the knowledge of divine things. For although the attainments of Solomon were so diversified that we cannot suppose him to have been an enemy to know ledge in general, yet the scope of the book is such as to con vince every attentive reader that it is religious knowledge that knowledge which leads to 'the fear of the Lord' - of which he is throughout so lavish of his praises. We need scarcely add that the scriptures are the only source from which religious knowledge is to be derived; and that the teaching of the divine Spirit is indispensable to render even these effectual. The truth of these statements, we beg it to be observed, is to be understood as taken for granted in the whole Of the following discussion. We shall endeavour, with the divine assistance, to explain how the want of religious knowledge is not good for man, and to point out some of those principles by which christians ought to be actuated in seeking the religious instruction of the rising generation. I. I am first to attempt an illustration of the text, by showing how the want of religious knowledge is not good for man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Of the Light of Nature: A Discourse During the latter half of the sixteenth century, under the wise but arbitrary civil sway of the Maiden Queen, and the not less arbitrary, but much less wise ecclesiastical rule of Parker, and Grindal, and Whitgift, metropolitans of England, there lived in London a wealthy merchant citizen, Nicolas Culverwel, or, as it is sometimes written, Culverel, who, if we may judge from the history of his family, was, like many of his compeers, a devoted adherent to Puritanism; a circumstance which, when we consider how much that form of religion was discountenanced both by royal and episcopal authority, and how serious were the dangers and sacrifices to which its rich professors were especially exposed, must be allowed to be a presumption, at least, that Nicolas was a sincere, earnest man. Book The Transition of Religion to Culture in Law and Public Discourse

Download or read book The Transition of Religion to Culture in Law and Public Discourse written by Lori G. Beaman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the recent trend toward the transformation of religious symbols and practices into culture in Western democracies. Analyses of three legal cases involving religion in the public sphere are used to illuminate this trend: a municipal council chamber; a town hall; and town board meetings. Each case involves a different national context—Canada, France and the United States—and each illustrates something interesting about the shape-shifting nature of religion, specifically its flexibility and dexterity in the face of the secular, the religious and the plural. Despite the differences in national contexts, in each instance religion is transformed into culture or heritage by the courts to justify or excuse its presence and to distance the state from the possibility that it is violating legal norms of distance from religion. The cultural practice or symbol is represented as a shared national value or activity. Transforming the ‘Other’ into ‘Us’ through reconstitution is also possible. Finally, anxiety about the ‘Other’ becomes part of the story of rendering religion as culture, resulting in the impugning of anyone who dares to question the putative shared culture. The book will be essential reading for students, academics and policy-makers working in the areas of sociology of religion, religious studies, socio-legal studies, law and public policy, constitutional law, religion and politics, and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Discourses on Orthodoxy I have been encouraged to think that there may be a place for these Discourses in our widening missionary field, and present them to the American Unitarian Asso ciation for that service. I take satisfaction, besides, in celebrating thus by a new edition the fortieth anniversary of their first appearance. In several instances the Revised Version of the New Testament has enabled me to simplify the form of state ment in this edition. Excepting this, the changes that have been made are few, and mostly verbal. I will add, in further justification of this reprint, the testimony of the late President Walker, who wrote (october 22, of the last three Discourses in this Volume, that they are es pecially valuable, and contain the views on their several subjects which alone, as it seems to me, can stand.
