Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Passages Selected From the Book of the Acts of the Apostles The latter writer, the truth, tenderness, and ele gance Of his sentiments, have been universally felt and acknowledged. Both Of these eminent men have finished their appointed course on earth but their works continue to be read with pleasure and advantage by good men Of all dif ferent religious parties; and theirs is the high praise Of having been instrumental in turning many to righteousness. Happy should I be, if I could anticipate any similar effects, though far inferior in extent, from the publication Of the following Discourses. [commend them to the blessing Of Almighty God, praying that he may render them useful for promoting the glori one cause which the Apostles Of Jesus supported, and for which they cheerfully suffered and died. Book The Messages of the Apostles

Download or read book The Messages of the Apostles written by George Barker Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Messages of the Apostles: The Apostolic Discourses in the Book of Acts and the General and Pastoral Epistles of the New Testament Arranged in Chronological Order, Analyzed, and Freely Rendered in Paraphrase The present volume includes the apostolic discourses contained in the earlier chapters of Acts and the Epistles of James, First Peter, Jude, Second Peter, First Timothy, Titus, Second Timothy, Hebrews, First, Second, and Third John, in the order named. The dates of many of these books are uncertain, and no order can claim to be more than approximately chronological. In general, how ever, the sermons from Acts, the Epistle of James, and the First Epistle of Peter may be said to represent the earlier forms and stages of Christian teaching, while Epistles like Hebrews and First John belong to its later period. The Epistles to Timothy and Titus are included in this volume, partly because so many scholars doubt their Pauline au thorship in their present form and, especially, because in any case they re ect the work of Timothy and Titus in ecclesiastical administration more than the theology of the apostle. The first ten Epistles of Paul, reproduced in The Messages of Paul, present to us the apostle's doctrinal system. The Pastorals, whatever view be taken of their authorship, have little bearing upon that system, but deal with relations and conditions which more ap propriately place them in the later group Of New Testa ment writings. Book Historiography and Self Definition

Download or read book Historiography and Self Definition written by Gregory Sterling and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-03 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries scholars have recognized the apologetic character of the Hellenistic Jewish historians, Josephos, and Luke-Acts; they have not, however, adequately addressed their possible relationships to each other and to their wider cultures. In this first full systematic effort to set these authors within the framework of Greco-Roman traditions, Professor Sterling has used genre criticism as a method for locating a distinct tradition of historical writing, apologetic historiography. Apologetic historiography is the story of a subgroup of people which deliberately Hellenizes the traditions of the group in an effort to provide a self-definition within the context of the larger world. It arose as a result of a dialectic relationship with Greek ethnography. This work traces the evolution of this tradition through three major eras of eastern Mediterranean history spanning six hundred years: the Persian, the Greek, and the Roman.

Book Does the New Testament Imitate Homer

Download or read book Does the New Testament Imitate Homer written by Dennis R. MacDonald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: div In this provocative challenge to prevailing views of New Testament sources, Dennis R. MacDonald argues that the origins of passages in the book of Acts are to be found not in early Christian legends but in the epics of Homer. MacDonald focuses on four passages in the book of Acts, examines their potential parallels in the Iliad, and concludes that the author of Acts composed them using famous scenes in Homer’s work as a model. Tracing the influence of passages from the Iliad on subsequent ancient literature, MacDonald shows how the story generated a vibrant, mimetic literary tradition long before Luke composed the Acts. Luke could have expected educated readers to recognize his transformation of these tales and to see that the Christian God and heroes were superior to Homeric gods and heroes. Building upon and extending the analytic methods of his earlier book, The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark, MacDonald opens an original and promising appreciation not only of Acts but also of the composition of early Christian narrative in general. /DIV

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of selected readings that are of continuing significance for Christian apologetics. A brief bibliography is also given for each writer. Christians have always been called on to defend their beliefs- certainly no less today than at any other time in history.
