Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Christian Doctrine In some of the discourses I had occasion to investigate the views of others but I have endeavored to do it impartially, and. In a Christian spirit. I have labored to speak the truth in love. The character of Christ, and the great work which he came to accomplish, has long been a subject of study With me, and I now give to the public the result of my labors. I do not claim perfection. I have only presented in these discourses what I believe to be nearer the truth than any thing I have ever seen. I am only a learner in the school of Christ. I do not wish to speak dogmatically, Where the greatest and best minds that ever adorned the Church have differed. I only desire to lead men to the investigation of divine truth, and to the recep tion of the Spirit of Christ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Doctrine: A Series of Discourses But I had never attempted to deliver a series of discourses expounding, in an orderly and systematic manner, all the principal doctrines of the Christian Faith. In the sermons which are collected in this volume I have, at last, made the attempt. They have been delivered during the last twelve months. When I had written them, I found that several of them were so long that they would impose an undue strain on the attention of the congregation, and I therefore, in one or two cases, gave a brief summary of an extended argument, and, in other cases, omitted a whole section. But so far from finding that a congregation will not 'stand doctrinal sermons, my experience is that such sermons, if of moderate length, are of great interest to large numbers of Christian people. That on the Signs of the Times was delivered before the Associate Synod a good many years ago; and that on Brotherly Love about 1818, when there were some serious disturbances in the Asso ciate Presbyterian Congregation of Pittsburgh. That on the Divinity of Christ was principally composed to complete the contemplated arrange ment of this volume. Those on the Sabbath and on Light are newly composed - In respect to this last, (on Light, ) I am sensible many will not be much pleased with it; but others, it is hoped, will be of a different opinion; for the author thought that those immense discoveries which are made in modern science couldnot be supposed absolutely all incapable of being applied to the religious character of man; and he has attempted to make a slender experiment on some of the properties of light. Book Sidelights on Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sidelights on Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint written by James Orr and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sidelights on Christian Doctrine The Studies in this Volume are based upon Addresses on Christian Doctrine given at various Conferences and Bible Schools in America. This may explain the semi-popular character of the exposition, and some peculiarities in the style, which it has not been thought necessary to remove. Perhaps the less formal nature of the Studies will adapt them better to the needs of those whom technical works on theology might repel. The treatment makes no pretence at exhaustiveness, but probably it will be found that few points of real importance in theological study are left untouched. The work may therefore serve as an introduction to more elaborate handbooks on the Christian doctrines. It may serve to show what, in substance, theology is, to create an interest in its questions, and to remove some misconceptions as to its nature, necessity, and scope. In some degree, it may even be a contribution to the right apprehension of the Christian truth itself. These are days in which theology is at a discount. The cry is loud for "reconstruction" of Christian doctrines; for re-statement in terms of living thought. This book has little to offer in the way of novelties. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Prayer This is the first of a short series of books on the Great Christian Doctrines. There is, I believe, a widespread and earnest desire on the part of teachers of the Bible to do more than has lately been done for the teaching of Christian doctrine. The complaint that doctrine is dry is due to the way it is taught, even more than to the spirit of the age Anything is dry that is disorderly or unreal. In this volume the Doctrine of Prayer is presented in an orderly sequence, and contact with reality is maintained at every step by means of illustration or example. Book Discourses on Christian Faith and Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book Discourses on Christian Faith and Practice Classic Reprint written by Milton Ward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses on Christian Faith and Practice The argument in favor of a plurality of divine persons, which is founded on the position, that infinite love must have an adequate object in order that it may give rise to infinite happiness, cannot be answered; it proves conclu sively, that there must be more beings than one possess ing the attributes of Godhead, but it does not prove that those beings have one common nature; it may, however, be demonstrated, and the author has attempted to demon strate, that three infinite beings must, in consequence of their infinity, exist in a perfect unity of essence, or, in other words, must have one common nature. Thus we may meet the objectors to the doctrine of the Trinity on their own ground, and show that this doctrine cannot be denied, without contradicting reason as well as reve lation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God Christianity is a doctrine Of God and a life in God. It is scarcely more; for its great peculiarity is its proclamation Of a work of gracious help from God to man, performed because God is what he is, and all its substance beyond this consists in the unfolding Of what it means, in experience and thought, that God is such a Being as Jesus Christ makes known. Christianity is religion with such a God, and Christian theology is the doctrine of such a God, and of that which follows from his being. Book The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Classic Reprint written by James Denney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Reconciliation is a term of wide scope and various applica tion, and it is hardly possible to conceive a life or a religion which should dispense with it. There is always some kind Of strain or tension between man and his environment, and man has always an interest in overcoming the strain, in re solving the discord in his situation into a harmony, in getting the environment to be his ally rather than his adversary. The process by which his end is attained may be described 'as one of reconciliation, but whether the reconciliation is adequate depends on whether his conception Of the environ ment is equal to the truth. Men may be very dimly and imperfectly conscious of the nature Of the strain which dis quiets their life, and may seek to Overcome it in blind and insufficient ways. They may interpret it as physical in its origin when it is really ethical, or as the misapprehension of a moral order when it is really antagonism to a personal God, and in either case the reconciliation they seek will fail to give the peace of which they are in quest. Nevertheless, reconciliation and nothing else is what they want, and its place in religion is central and vital. Book The Christian Doctrine of Faith Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Faith Classic Reprint written by James Hastings and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Faith This is not a theological treatise on the one hand, nor on the other is it a volume of sermons. Like its predecessor, the volume on Prayer, it has a distinct office to fulfil, an office that in the judgment of the editor is of immense importance. For between the professor's lecture-room and the preacher's study there is a great gulf fixed. In the lecture-room the lectures on systematic theology are laboriously entered into notebooks, which are useful for the exit examinations. But when the active work of the ministry begins, and so many sermons have to be prepared every week, the cupboard into which those notebooks have been stowed away is left undisturbed. The preacher begins to Spin his sermons out of his own brains, with the assistance of such popular books as happen to be at his hand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the Gospel: A Manual of Christian Doctrine This history of the origin of the present book will explain its form. While attempting to go with fair thoroughness into the various questions raised, it does not profess to deal with them exhaustively, as a book written for the learned would. It assumes little in the reader besides an average English education and a devout mind. Recondite theological language is avoided. Terms are explained as they occur. It is hoped, therefore, that'the book may prove useful, not only to Teachers of the Divine Mysteries at the beginning of their studies, but to many private Chris tians also, who wish to have an intelligent grasp of their faith. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation IN publishing this, the third volume of the Doctrine of Justification and Reconciliation, I think I may assume that many questions excited by the History of the Doctrine which appeared four years ago will find their answer here. In order to make what is the central doctrine of Christianity intelligible as such, I have been compelled to give an almost complete outline of Systematic Theology, the remaining parts of which could easily be supplied. No one who has given any attention to Vol. II. Will be surprised at the fulness of the exposition. I need not, it seems to me, make any statement in advance regarding what has been my aim in the positive explication of the doctrine. For one thing my path and the goal it leads to were marked out for me by what I have exhibited in Vol. II. As the Biblical material of the doctrine; while for the rest I think I have already made it sufficiently clear in Vol. I. That my theology has no place in the ordinary classification of theological parties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
