Book Subversions of Desire

Download or read book Subversions of Desire written by Epifanio San Juan and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This contextualizing of the imagination reveals two dimensions in the writer's discursive strategy: the ideological function of reconciling contradictions, and the utopian drive to subvert imperialist subjection via the invention of an egalitarian, resurgent Filipino community--the fulfillment of the dream of the 1896 Revolution. Joaquin's corpus is therefore as conflicted, as torn by the same contradictions as the body politic which his art seeks to mediate."--P. [4] of cover.

Book Reading the West writing the East

Download or read book Reading the West writing the East written by Epifanio San Juan and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the emergence of revolutionary nationalism in the Philippines in the last two decades, the fate of liberal elite democracy introduced by the United States, its former colonial master, hangs in the balance. This extraordinary achievement in comparative cultural studies maps the genealogy of this crisis. It addresses the ethics and politics of ideas and languages migrating to and from metropolis to periphery. Mediated through a historical critique of United States-Philippines literary transactions, this groundbreaking work endeavors to articulate a Third World perspective on the impact of Eurocentric power on a unique indigenous tradition of resistance. It offers a critique of hegemonic ideology and its symbolic exchanges with the praxis of oppositional texts. What results is the emancipatory project of Philippine writing - a popular-democratic vision of national liberation.

Book Educating for Civic Dialogue in an Age of Uncivil Discourse

Download or read book Educating for Civic Dialogue in an Age of Uncivil Discourse written by Dennis Gunn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educating for Civic Dialogue in an Age of Uncivil Discourse addresses an urgent challenge—to help students learn the skills of civic engagement—by offering a framework for authentic cosmopolitan education. As an invitation to ongoing civil dialogue with diverse voices in the classroom, the book aims to foster the skills of democratic and global citizenship that allow students to find their voice as local, national, and global citizens outside of the classroom. It suggests practical ways that teachers can promote the skills of attentive listening, intelligent questioning, reasonable positioning, and responsible dialogue in order to encourage authentic civic discourse. It also outlines specific pedagogical strategies designed to foster students’ cosmopolitan competencies as democratic and global citizens.

Book The Role of Moral Reasoning on Socioscientific Issues and Discourse in Science Education

This book was released on 2007-04-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to address moral reasoning and socioscientific discourse. It provides a theoretical framework to reconsider what a "functional view" of scientific literacy entails, by examining how nature of science issues, classroom discourse issues, cultural issues, and science-technology-society-environment case-based issues contribute to habits of mind about socioscientific content. The text covers philosophical, psychological and pedagogical considerations underpinning moral reasoning, as well as the status of socioscientific issues in science education.

Book The Politics of Muslim Intellectual Discourse in the West

Download or read book The Politics of Muslim Intellectual Discourse in the West written by Dilyana Mincheva and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a case study in the literary, psychoanalytic, and theological encounters between diasporic Muslim intellectuals and secular western modernity. It centres on the simultaneous search for the possibility of both a reformation of Islamic fundamentalism and a transformation of the exclusionary limitations of western public institutions. With roots in original research in the fields of comparative religion and cultural studies, and drawing on sources in English, French, and Arabic, the author introduces and elaborates the concept of "Western-Islamic public sphere". This concept defines what is at stake in the formative play of public representations where traditionalist foundations and modernist adaptations meet, clash, and produce discourse around their common disequilibrium. The Western-Islamic public sphere (which is secular but not secularist and which is Islamic but not Islamist), within which a critical Islamic intellectual universe can unfold, deals hermeneutically with texts and politically with lived practices. It emerges from within the arc of two alternative, conflicting, yet equally dismissive suspicions defined by a view that critical Islam is the new imperial rhetoric of hegemonic orientalism and the opposite view that critical Islam is just fundamentalism camouflaged in liberal rhetoric. This innovative and original scholarly apparatus offers a third view -- one that arises in its practice from ethical commitment to intellectual engagement, creativity, and imagination as a portal to the open horizons of conflictual history.

Book excerpt: "In this new book, Jared Del Rosso argues that to understand contemporary social problems we need to become aware of the strategies that people use to deny the existence of those very problems. Drawing on research in sociology, criminology, psychology, and communication studies, Del Rosso develops a new vocabulary for describing denial and its consequences. With examples from everyday observations, current events, and social scientific research, Del Rosso also reveals just how widespread and varied the uses of denial are. Some uses of denial can help people repair their interactions and relationships with others. But most uses of it allows problems to fester, unrecognized. We need, Del Rosso concludes, forms of acknowledgement to surface long-denied problems. But more than that, we need collective forms of action to remedy the harms that those problems and our denial of them have done"--

Book Teaching Politics in Secondary Education

Download or read book Teaching Politics in Secondary Education written by Wayne Journell and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uses data collected from multiple studies, starting with Obama’s historic 2008 candidacy through his reelection in 2012, to offer recommendations on best practices. Many social studies teachers report feeling apprehensive about discussing potentially volatile topics in the classroom, because they fear that administrators and parents might accuse them of attempting to indoctrinate their students. Wayne Journell tackles the controversial nature of teaching politics, addressing commonly raised concerns such as how to frame divisive political issues, whether teachers should disclose their personal political beliefs to students, and how to handle political topics that become intertwined with socially sensitive topics such as race, gender, and religion. Journell discusses how classrooms can become spaces for tolerant political discourse in an increasingly politically polarized American society. In order to explore this, Journell analyzes data that include studies of high school civics/government teachers during the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections and how they integrated television programs, technology, and social media into their teaching. The book also includes a three-year study of preservice middle and secondary social studies teachers’ political knowledge and a content analysis of CNN Student News. “Journell combines philosophical inquiry into the importance of political engagement with empirical work in classrooms to present a set of arguments that are rigorous and highly relevant to both scholars and practitioners who care about political teaching and learning." — Joel Westheimer, author of What Kind of Citizen? Educating Our Children for the Common Good
