Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses of Slavery There can hardly fail at the present time to attach a mournful interest to these Discourses on Slavery by Theo dore Parker. Few will read them and see how deeply their author's heart was engaged in the cause of Negro Emancipation, without being touched by the thought that in the great struggle now passing in America, the voice which would have spoken loudest for right and justice has been silent, and the brave soul which would have exulted in the triumph of freedom has passed away from earth beyond the tidings of the con ict, perhaps beyond the echoes of that last glad Te Deum which shall arise from an enfranchised race and a regenerated land. And we cannot but acknowledge the goodness of Heaven in constantly supplying us with preachers of the gospel, whose concern has been the temporal and spiritual happiness of this people. "In a day like this, when all the friends of civil and religious liberty are exerting themselves to deliver this country from its present calamities, we cannot but place great hopes in an order of men who have ever distinguished themselves in their country's cause; and do, therefore, recommend to the ministers of the gospel in the several towns and other places in the colony, that they assist us by advising the people of their several congregations," etc. "Resolved, That the foregoing Address be presented to all the ministers of the gospel in the Province." - First Provincial Congress Of Massachusetts, 1774. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse Delivered Before the African Society in Boston, 15th of July, 1822, on the Anniversary Celebration of the Abolition of the Slave Trade With all this provision for social order and happiness, mankind ought to live together as members of one large family; though separating from each other as they settle in the world, yet not disunited nor estranged; and, having a common interest, zealously engaged in promoting it. But the history of our species discovers to us how little this has been regarded by them. Instead of continuing to prove "how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity," they became selfish, sought to monopolize the bounties of nature, and aimed more at private gratification than the general benefit. Those who had obtained but a small share of what were considered the goods of life, grew envious of those who had more. Hence arose cupidity; and, to obtain what was coveted, resort was had to fraud or rapine. This occasioned contention. Those who possessed most power, or could bring the greater number to share with them as freebooters, were enabled to plunder the feeble and make a spoil of the unresisting. Where opposition was attempted, it served only to increase the contest with those who suffered wrong. Sometimes injuries provoked retaliation. Invasion of each others rights led to oppression, and incensed the passions to war. Such as were not slain in the conflict were taken captives, and subjugated to their conquerors, or sold as slaves to others. - Such was the origin of Slavery in ancient times. War was its hateful parent, Tyranny its cruel master, and degradation and suffering its remorseless lot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Crisis Slavery Or Freedom

Download or read book The Crisis Slavery Or Freedom written by H. P. Cutting and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-03 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crisis Slavery or Freedom: A Discourse, Preached in Williston and Hinesburgh, on Sundays, June 25th, and July 2d, 1854 During the present session of Congress, slavery has been crowned absolute monarch. Northern men with southern principles did the deed. Upon them rests the responsibility. But by being traitors to northern sentiment, they have been the means of bringing the issue before northern people and it is for them to decide which they will have, all slavery and no freedom, or all freedom and no slavery. The passage of the Nebraska bill sweeps away all compromises with slavery, so that not a vestige of them remains. This bill declares that the Missouri compromise of 1820, which solemnly forbade slave ry to go beyond 36 deg. 30 min., is inconsistent with the principles of non-intervention by congress with slavery in the states and territories as recognized by the legislation of 1850, commonly called the comepromise measures, is hereby declared inoperative and void. This measure is an open violation Of plighted faith. It drives us to the side of freedom at all peril to the union Of these states. If the union of these states depends upon maintaining the interests Of slavery and throttling freedom in New England, the union is a curse and ought to be broken - the sooner the better. Before we are driven to this al ternative, let us try what truth, justice and determined Opposition to the slave power will do in the present struggle. In the great con ict now commencing, says Horace Greeley, to resist the surrender of this union and government to the Slaveholders, we wish to know no party names or divisions. We desire to see enlisted under our ban ner all who are opposed to the invasion Of the free territories Of the north by the Slaveholders Of the south all who wish to see liber ty and not slavery the great interest of the state. We ask, who is ready to league together to dethrone the new monarch? Freedom has been betrayed and sacrificed. Its gates have been thrown Open by foul treachery, the invader has entered and revels in his spoils I A territory which one short year ago was unanimously considered by all, north and south, as sacredly secure by irrepealable law to freedom for ever, has been foully betrayed by traitor hearts and traitor voices, and surrendered to slavery. Conspiracy has done its worst. Treason has done its worst. Who comes to the rescue 7. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Discourse on Slavery

Download or read book A Discourse on Slavery written by W. D. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on Slavery: Delivered Before the Anti-Slavery Society in Littleton, N. H., February 22, 1839, Being the Anniversary of the Birth of Washington Mr. President and Gentlemen: I accept with pleasure the invitation you have been pleased to give me, to come up here and speak to you at this time on the subject of human slavery. The birth-day of Washington brings with it, to every lover of freedom, and especially to every freeman of America, associations calculated to awaken in his bosom the noblest and holiest emotions. The recollections of a man great, almost beyond human weakness, a nation's father and idol, who had been their pillar of fire by night and of cloud by day, to guide them during their long and perilous struggle for liberty, and who, when that struggle was ended, planned and reared a form of government to which all eyes are turned in admiration, and on which the trembling hopes of the world yet hang, till they may see if it be not too like heaven to be long realized here on earth, seem to call us forth from the homely routine of every day thought and feeling, to set apart this hour to the entertainment of holier and nobler emotions. When we think of him whose life and energies were spent in the cause of human freedom, without a taint of selfishness, avarice or ambition, but who even refused the emoluments and power that the fond idolatry of the people he had served would gladly have given him, we seem to shut our eyes upon the avarice, corruption and oppression that is around us, and for a while persuade ourselves that it is not so. It cannot be that a nation, before whose eyes has been displayed so much greatness, such purity, such devotion to the cause of man, should still rob three millions of their fellow-men of their dearest rights. It cannot be that men made of the same clay, and in the same image with Washington, can be so unlike him as to hear calmly the chains of the slave clank upon their native soil, and in their own dwellings; the bread of a soil watered by the tears and blood of slaves cannot be sweet to their mouths; the shrieks and groans of the chain-galled African cannot be music to their ears. But, alas! it is so; it is no dream. Oh! that it were. It does seem that the mention of human slavery in connection with the name of Washington would be enough to make any man an abolitionist. It does seem that the thought of three millions of slaves in our own country, occurring amidst the thoughts and feelings inspired by this day and occasion, would be enough to call every heart and hand to the assistance of the oppressed. The last three theses of Mr. Van Dyke's discourse, Abolition ism leads by logical process to infidelity, &c., &c., I summarily dispose of by a simple and absolute denial of their relevancy and of the statements therein contained they are a web of misrepresentations unworthy the subject and the position of their author.
