Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses Delivered in Murray Street Church on Sabbath Evenings, During the Months of March, April, and May, 1830 Of common sense and sound experience, than that the change of character from sin to holiness, from man's native and practical wickedness to the rectitude Of the gospel, which is every where so much insisted on as the indispensable pre-requisite to the enjoyment of the divine favour and kingdom, is effected through the instrumentality Of divine truth. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth. Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word Of God. The divine conduct toward men every where recognises their rationality; and no where more sensibly, than in the method Of his grace. In exciting proper affections toward the various Objects to which they sustain a moral relation, he brings those Objects to the view Of the mind. Of the great multitude already sanctified by his grace, it may be said, they had slumbered in sin, unless they had been instructed, alarmed, convinced, and humbled through the instrumentality Of truth. They had gone down to the grave and to the bar Of God with a lie in their right hand, had not he, who convinces the world Of sin, of righteousness and Of judgmentto come, shewed them the things that are Christ's. And Of the multitudes who are now ignorant Of God and far from righteousness, must it be said; that they perish in their sins, until they become acquainted with God; and until he, by his convincing, quickening, and renovating power, make those views Of truth lovely. Boynton, Preached in the Village Church, South Coventry, Sabbath, May 5th, 1850 It is through great tribulation that the saints enter the heavenly state. Go and knock at the door of that great tomb which contains the precious dust that Christ watches over in its long slumber till the glorious morning of the resurrection, and ask how many perished by disease and the ordinary death of man; what multitudes have been all their life-time subject to bondage through fear of a persecuting foe; how many have been hunted like wild beasts from one hiding place to another till death was welcome! how many have dwelt long in damp and loathsome dungeons! how many have been thrown to wild beasts! how many have felt instruments of torture; how many have perished in the indiscriminate slaughter of persecution; how many have been burned at the stake! "And I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held, and they cried with a loud voice, saying, how long Oh Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth." The saints who are permitted to live in outward peace come out of great tribulation. It was in view of spiritual struggles, which every child of God feels, that a holy apostle exclaimed, "O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death!" The spiritual conflicts of the Christian, the struggles of opposing principles within him, occur in silence and darkness, but they are often terrible and agonizing. The saints are not exempted from the common woes of humanity. They taste the bitter cup of disappointment. They see and pass through the dark and deep waters of affliction. They feel the sundering of earthly ties. They know what it is to wish to lie down in the grave with some loved object. They have felt a void that can never be filled. They have seen the earth grow dark and desolate under the heavy hand of God. They are made often to feel that they are strangers and pilgrims on the earth. They are brought often to a deep sense of their sins under the heavy chastisements of God. They are often made to sigh and long for their final rest under the burdens of life. The whole course of the Christian's life is sometimes one of sorrow and anguish. He sees little but darkness in this world, and God is fitting him in it all for the higher enjoyment of the light of heaven. Book excerpt: A much neglected field of study has been opened by the research of the author into the history of the Christian church from its apostolic origins to the close of the eighteenth century. Taking as his thesis the prominence given to the Church in the Wilderness in Bible prophecy, and the fact that “‘the Church in the Wilderness,’ and not the proud hierarchy enthroned in the world’s great capital, was the true church of Christ,” he has spent years developing this subject. In its present form, Truth Triumphant represents much arduous research in the libraries of Europe as well as in America. Excellent ancient sources are most difficult to obtain, but the author has been successful in gaining access to many of them. To crystallize the subject matter and make the historical facts live in modem times, the author also made extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The doctrines of the primitive Christian church spread to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As grains of a mustard seed they lodged in the hearts of many Godly souls in southern France and northern Italy — people known as the Albigenses and the Waldenses. The faith of Jesus was valiantly upheld by the Church of the East. This term, as used by the author, not only includes the Syrian and Assyrian Churches, but is also the term applied to the development of apostolic Christianity throughout the lands of the East. The spirit of Christ, burning in the hearts of loyal men who would not compromise with paganism, sent them forth as missionaries to lands afar. Patrick, Columbanus, Marcos, and a host of others were missionaries to distant lands. They braved the ignorance of the barbarian, the intolerance of the apostate church leaders, and the persecution of the state in order that they might win souls to God. To unfold the dangers that were ever present in the conflict of the true church against error, to reveal the sinister working of evil and the divine strength by which men of God made truth triumphant, to challenge the Remnant Church today in its final controversy against the powers of evil, and to show the holy, unchanging message of the Bible as it has been preserved for t hose who will “fear God, and keep His commandments” — these are the sincere aims of the author as he presents this book to those who know the truth. Over-emphasis on clergy is redressed by additional laity, males by females, and "in-church" activities by contributions well beyond the workings of institutional agendas. These almost daily commemorations occupy over 600 of the book's 785 pages, by far the lion's share of its content. Remaining sections address: principles of revision and guides for future revision; liturgical propers for seasons (Advent/Christmas, Lent, and Easter); and new propers for a miscellany of propers usable with individuals (or events) not officially listed in the formal calendar. Two cycles of propers for daily Eucharist are also included, one covering a six week period, the other a two year cycle.
