This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses, Argumentative and Devotional, on the Subject of the Jewish Religion, Vol. 1 of 2: Delivered at the Synagogue Mikveh Israel, in Philadelphia, in the Years 5590-5597 In the following work the reader is presented with the labour of more than six years. Many of the Discourses were composed, when suffering both under mental and bodily afflictions, when any exertion was extremely painful; and it must not be imagined, that, what appears to read smoothly, and as if written off-hand, costs not an intense degree of thought and application. Very often the labour was interrupted by severe sickness and other untoward events, and hence the frequent long intervals between the different treatises. Still I never relaxed in my endeavours to diffuse religious and useful knowledge, and I fervently trust that I have succeeded, to a certain extent, to impart some information which is not readily accessible in books in general circulation. The first twenty Discourses were re-written, because I could not suffer my first attempts to come before the public without a thorough revision. The others, however, which were composed chiefly after the chastening hand of the Lord had fallen heavily on me, were prepared with more care, and I therefore only corrected them carefully, and altered those parts which appeared objectionable or defective. I will not assert, that I could not have altered the whole series, and perhaps improved it much more than I have done; but still I was obliged to stop somewhere in the alterations I introduced, and I candidly believe that further changes, curtailments and enlargements would not have enabled me to produce any thing more deserving of approbation; as, what might in this manner have been gained in beauty of style, would to a certainty have been sacrificed to the force and ingenuousness always belonging to the first efforts of the mind, before they have been subjected to the cold and capricious judgment of criticism. Doubtlessly another might have used the pruning knife more frequently and relentlessly, and have improved the work much more than has been done by me; still I may say, that I acted as impartially towards myself as I was able, and excused nothing that I found to be faulty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses, Vol. 3: Argumentative and Devotional, on the Subject of the Jewish Religion Delivered Chiefly at the Synagogue Mikveh Israel, in Philadelphia, in the Years 5598 5601 The kind reception which has been extended to my first series of Discourses, published four years ago, and the frequent inquiries for a continuation of the same, have emboldened me to appear again before the public with this new claimant of their favour. - The present collection is rather less than a half of the former; since various interruptions, which I need not enumerate, independently of the shorter period during which they were delivered, prevented me from speaking as often as I might have wished. It is truly to be regretted that so far public addresses on religious topics have constituted but a small portion of our devotional exercises in all the countries where the English is spoken; and I believe that it may be said without any vanity on my part, that in our Synagogue was the first attempt made for about ten years past to give religious instruction in lectures. It can easily be imagined that there are many difficulties in the way of a successful pursuit of the calling of a public teacher among our people in this country, owing chiefly to the fact, that we are composed of persons from every European nation, and that therefore to many the English language is partly unintelligible, especially as in an oration the ideas cannot be always conveyed in very simple language, without divesting the subject of all dignity. Still much might be done in furtherance of the introduction and support of teaching by lectures, if those sufficiently well acquainted with the vernacular tongue of England and America would lend their countenance, and elect either ministers capable of speaking no less than reading after the accepted mode, or appoint public lecturers in addition to the usual officers of the Synagogue. No doubt the latter method would be more in accordance with the public wants; because the Reader proper has to perform duties sufficiently laborious without having to preach when the usual service is finished, or during the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourses, Vol. 3: Argumentative and Devotional, on the Subject of the Jewish Religion Delivered Chiefly at the Synagogue Mikveh Israel, in Philadelphia, in the Years 5598 5601 In Germany, principally I believe in the larger cities, for in stance Hamburg, Berlin, Glogau, Prague, Frankford, Munich, and no doubt other places, Rabbins and lecturers have been appointed chiefly with the view of delivering weekly or occasional sermons; and of these, the fame of Bernays, Salomon, Kley, Plessner, Sachs, and others, has reached us even at this distance; and lately Miss Goldsmith, of London, has rendered a service to our literature by translating twelve sermons of Dr. Salomon into English, although it must be remarked that occasionally this learned preacher endeavours to force his own peculiar views rather too glaringly upon our atten tion. But it is to be expected that, as with every thing else, there Will be a difference of opinion among the honestly thinking in mat ters of religion likewise, the more so since of late certain persons calling themselves reformers have endeavoured to introduce changes in our mode of worship. Now Dr. S. Is the principal organ of this portion, a small one indeed thus far, and hence we cannot be sur prised that we cannot always approve altogether of his ideas or of the manner in which they are presented to us; though to do him justice his style is very beautiful and fascinating, and his advice generally wholesome and pious. It is to be regretted that as yet the works of our other preachers have not obtained currency among the English-speaking Jews: still we may indulge the hope that by degrees such a taste may be awakened among them, that they will desire to possess these books, when the demand will no doubt be answered by some one capable of executing the task.
