Book Discourse War and Terrorism

Download or read book Discourse War and Terrorism written by Adam Hodges and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-04-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discourse since September 11, 2001 has constrained and shaped public discussion and debate surrounding terrorism worldwide. Social actors in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and elsewhere employ the language of the “war on terror” to explain, react to, justify and understand a broad range of political, economic and social phenomena. Discourse, War and Terrorism explores the discursive production of identities, the shaping of ideologies, and the formation of collective understandings in response to 9/11 in the United States and around the world. At issue are how enemies are defined and identified, how political leaders and citizens react, and how members of societies understand their position in the world in relation to terrorism. Contributors to this volume represent diverse sub-fields involved in the critical study of language, including perspectives from sociocultural linguistics, communication, media, cultural and political studies.

Book Discourse on the Aspects of the War

Download or read book Discourse on the Aspects of the War written by James Freeman Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse on the Aspects of the War: Delivered in the Indiana-Place Chapel, Boston on Fast Day, April 2, 1863 There was another day of crisis, when you knew What it was to love. You found yourself caring more for another than for yourself, - going out Of your own life into that of another, finding a divine joy in adoring the beauty of another, following her with your thought, and feeding your life daily out of hers. This also was history. Those days may have long passed 'by. Perhaps you are a gray-headed man, known on change as a hard and keen man of business; no mortal suspects you of such a thing as sentiment. And yet, I will venture to say, there is somewhere among your papers, in some locked drawer of your bureau, a little faded packet of notes, with a withered flower which you cannot bear to throw away, - for it marks that critical period when you were all alive with an idea - when you were rapt away out of yourself into a seventh heaven. You were foolish as you could be, no doubt, - but - well, It was life; and you can never forget it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cultural Parameters of the Graeco Roman War Discourse

Download or read book The Cultural Parameters of the Graeco Roman War Discourse written by Theo Vijgen and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2020 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What were the ideas that the ancient Greeks and Romans held about warfare? What do contemporary sources tell us about this? Is it possible to trace a development in the way of thinking about war in antiquity? These are the questions that are discussed (and answered) in this study. It combines a close reading of all he sources that we have - mostly written, like literary and historiographjcal, but also non-written, like art, monuments and coinage. The analysis of the discourse is accompanied by and contrasted with arguments raised by today's specialists in the field of warfare and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. The study treats recurrent cultural themes like courage, fatherland, or victory within a chronological framework, for discourse features cannot be isolated from the context of their time. For each specific period - Greek, Hellenistic and the six parts of the long and diverse Roman time - conclusions are drawn. The remarkable developments in time that can be observed, especially in Rome, are brought together in the final chapter.

Book The Discourse of Propaganda

Download or read book The Discourse of Propaganda written by John Oddo and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1990s, false reports of Iraqi soldiers in Kuwait allowing premature infants to die by removing them from their incubators helped to justify the Persian Gulf War, just as spurious reports of weapons of mass destruction later undergirded support for the Iraq War in 2003. In The Discourse of Propaganda, John Oddo examines these and other such cases to show how successful wartime propaganda functions as a discursive process. Oddo argues that propaganda is more than just misleading rhetoric generated by one person or group; it is an elaborate process that relies on recontextualization, ideally on a massive scale, to keep it alive and effective. In a series of case studies, he analyzes both textual and visual rhetoric as well as the social and material conditions that allow them to circulate, tracing how instances of propaganda are constructed, performed, and repeated in diverse contexts, such as speeches, news reports, and popular, everyday discourse. By revealing the agents, (inter)texts, and cultural practices involved in propaganda campaigns, The Discourse of Propaganda shines much-needed light on the topic and challenges its readers to consider the complicated processes that allow propaganda to flourish. This book will appeal not only to scholars of rhetoric and propaganda but also to those interested in unfolding the machinations motivating America’s recent military interventions.

Book Discourse and Affect in Foreign Policy

Download or read book Discourse and Affect in Foreign Policy written by Jakub Eberle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign and security policy have long been removed from the political pressures that influence other areas of policymaking. This has led to a tendency to separate the analytical levels of the individual and the collective. Using Lacanian theory, which views the subject as ontologically incomplete and desiring a perfect identity which is realised in fantasies, or narrative scenarios, this book shows that the making of foreign policy is a much more complex process. Emotions and affect play an important role, even where ‘hard’ security issues, such as the use of military force, are concerned. Eberle constructs a new theoretical framework for analysing foreign policy by capturing the interweaving of both discursive and affective aspects in policymaking. He uses this framework to explain Germany’s often contradictory foreign policy towards the Iraq crisis of 2002/2003, and the emotional, even existential, public debate that accompanied it. This book adds to ongoing theoretical debates in International Political Sociology and Critical Security Studies and will be required reading for all scholars working in these areas.
