Book Language Education in Multilingual Colombia

Download or read book Language Education in Multilingual Colombia written by Norbella Miranda and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together cutting-edge research and theoretical discussions on the linguistic, cultural, and political forces that shape multilingual Colombia, highlighting the country’s unique sociolinguistic landscape and offering new insights into multilingualism in the Global South. The volume outlines the changing dynamics of multilingualism in Colombia, where Spanish, Spanish-based and English-based Creoles, the linguistic and cultural heritages of Indigenous communities and migrant groups, and the prevalence of English in language education policy intersect. The chapters explore the implications of policy making on language policy discourse and especially on language teacher education for those working on the margins in urban and rural areas. They also explore existing understandings of interculturality and the work of academics and local communities in minority language revitalization efforts. Problematizing essentialized views of language and culture and raising awareness around the complex relationship between language, identity, and interculturality in the Global South, this book will be of interest to scholars in multilingualism, sociolinguistics, language education, teacher education, and applied linguistics.

Book English Teachers in Colombia Ideologies and Identities in Academic Writing

Download or read book English Teachers in Colombia Ideologies and Identities in Academic Writing written by Norma Patricia Barletta Manjarres and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Language Teaching (ELT) can be considered an ideological enterprise especially at a time when the spread of English and the ELT profession are related to post-colonial and capitalist interests (Phillipson, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2006; Pennycook, 1994, 1997a; Canagarajah,1999b). In this context, nonnative English-speaking teachers (NNESTs) face particular challenges related to the prevailing ideologies of English, which has consequences in terms of roles, status, power, and access. This dissertation is a critical discourse analysis of the theses written by twenty in-service teachers of English as a Foreign Language in Colombia on completion of a one-year graduate program, during which they were acquainted with theories, approaches, and methodologies in the field of ELT. The objective is, through a close analysis of the language feature of the texts, 1) to identify ideologies of English, teaching and learning, and 2) to describe the identities the teachers construe for themselves in their writing. The analysis is text-driven and it uses categories from different functional approaches. The analysis of the texts shows that the writers engagein ideological discourses regarding the English language, the social and economic consequences of knowing English, and the cultural aims of foreign language teaching. Their discourses convey conceptions of teaching, learning and research that are influenced by acritical interpretations of the literature available to them. This does not seem to contribute to solving their practical problems and is likely to contribute to the maintenance of the students' established roles in their communities. The teacher-authors are faced with the challenge of dealing with the contradicting interests of their own ideals of education, the constraints of the conventions of the discourse community they are trying to enter, the institutional pressures to be updated with newer trends in applied linguistics and obtain visible results, and the needs of the country to find a place in the globalized economy. The study points to the need to encourage more critical interpretations and applications of the theories and approaches emanating from the traditional academic centers which in turn should also take interest in examining the pattern of the unilateral flow of knowledge and its consequences.

The fifth article shows the findings of developing contextualised worksheets centred on the task -based learning approach to enhance two oral communication micro-skills. The sixth article presents the impact of moodle-based worksheets on reading comprehension. Book The Research Practice Interface in English for Specific Purposes

Download or read book The Research Practice Interface in English for Specific Purposes written by Ersilia Incelli and published by . This book was released on 2022-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects the state-of-the-art in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) research, drawing on both top-down and bottom-up practices and methodological itineraries. In order to fill some of the gaps in the current literature, it provides well-grounded and thorough investigations into discursive practices in academic, workplace and intercultural settings, throwing light on the specific varieties of language used to achieve professional targets. Teachers have to act as an interface between theory and praxis, bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace to create a dynamic virtuous circle. The multi-perspective and multi-method frameworks presented in this volume range from quantitative corpus-based techniques integrated with discourse analysis to analyses of what occurs in the classroom informed by English language teaching (ELT) educational theories and notions regarding language acquisition, motivation, learning styles and instructional contexts. Both top-down and bottom-up approaches to the theory-practice dyad provide the opportunity to obtain a closer view of the subject from both ends of the spectrum and can prompt fresh initiatives by all those working within the domain of ESP. This book, therefore, offers a cutting-edge account of some of the latest avenues in research and practice which will be of interest to scholars and university teachers of ESP, as well as scholars in the field of applied linguistics.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled An investigation into the language used in meetings: Applying Discourse Analysis to English Panel meetings in a Hong Kong school Submitted by May M.C. Tang For the degree of M. A. in Applied Linguistics At the University of Hong Kong September 2004. This dissertation examines the relationship between discourse and power by investigating the language used in two English panel meetings in a Hong Kong school. Analysis and discussion addresses two levels and three main dimensions, which draw upon the critical discourse analysis methodology suggested by van Dijk (1993), Fairclough (1989) and Fowler (1985). The two levels are the contextual level and textual level. The context analysis touches on the marketization of English language education in modern culture, and a diagnosis of the hierarchical structure of the school in which the discourse occurred. For the textual level, the analysis goes from the top-down dimension to see how power and dominance are articulated, sustained or legitimized through both directive and constitutive practices. Secondly, the bottom-up dimension of power reproduction is investigated. Lastly, the study looks at the resistance from the dominated teachers in striking for flexibility and autonomy in the curriculum. Results show that power and dominance could be 'jointly produced or reproduced' by the dominating and dominated groups. The chairwoman actively enacted institutional power upon the teachers on one hand. On the other hand, teachers' acceptance of and compliance with such powerless roles help to sustain and reproduce such power asymmetry. Resistance was mediated, and even suppressed by authority. Only when there was concession shown in the dominating authority could the dominated group claim some power. In the conclusion, suggestions are made for future research in applying critical discourse analysis in educational settings. Book Discourse Analysis and Language Teaching

Download or read book Discourse Analysis and Language Teaching written by Janika Johanna Marley and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DA and language teaching The present thesis "Discourse analysis and language teaching: An Analysis of Vocabulary Diversity in the Transcripts of The Bold and the Beautiful and Its Practical Applications to Language Teaching" investigates the variety of soap opera vocabulary within the framework of discourse analysis. Based on theoretical sources and subjective observations it was assumed that many of the vocabulary items used in the series would be recycled in successive episodes. In order to verify the claim ten episodes were scrutinized resulting in a 20 000 word corpus that was divided into nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. The corpus was compared against the Longman Corpus Network database that includes 3000 most commonly used word in English. It became evident that the majority of the vocabulary items belongs to the list therefore it may be claimed that the language level of the soap opera is not beyond an average English language learner. Based on the vocabulary of the ten episodes the author also suggests three different types of exercises that can be used in the English language classroom.
