Book Teaching Preparedness to Better Prepare Children in the Event of Disaster

Download or read book Teaching Preparedness to Better Prepare Children in the Event of Disaster written by Brian Kendall and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine if teaching preparedness to children will better prepare them in the event of a disaster. Children have been the target audience for several campaigns in the past. By introducing disaster awareness into the schools, it is hoped, like in other campaigns, that children will take the knowledge obtained and share that information to family and friends. This study was significant to the field of emergency management due to the need of providing the general public with the necessary information and resources that could potentially save lives. As a result of this study, it has been found that children who were introduced to disaster preparedness did in fact increase their overall knowledge pertaining to disaster preparedness. This was evident by comparing the participants? pre- and post-test scores. Although there are multiple organizations trying to reach as many children as possible through various programs, disaster preparedness is not currently found in every school across the United States. By introducing disaster preparedness in the schools, children are ensured exposure to this life saving information. In addition, the children are potentially the link between the information and the rest of the family by being the best resource for reaching as many people as possible.

Book Examining School Personnel Perceptions of Disaster Preparedness and Meeting Students Mental Health Needs

Download or read book Examining School Personnel Perceptions of Disaster Preparedness and Meeting Students Mental Health Needs written by Cynthia Renfrow and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the perceptions of school personnel regarding emergency preparedness at schools and the mental health needs of students. More specifically, this study examines school personnel’s awareness of emergency preparedness plans at their sites and the mental health services that are available at their schools. A survey was administered to 40 school personnel at three campuses located in various geographical areas within Stanislaus County. The findings reveal that almost all participants had some awareness of their school emergency preparedness plan. In addition, the majority of participants acknowledged understanding procedures related to their sites’ emergency preparedness plans. Although most participants were aware that their sites had emergency preparedness plans, the results revealed that disparities of knowledge existed between administrators and teachers and that knowledge differed based on school grade level. Overall, administrators were more familiar with emergency plans than teachers and participants from elementary schools were more familiar with emergency preparedness plans than those at higher grade levels. Differences in perceptions regarding risk and the presence of law enforcement on campuses also differed based on school grade level. Participants from junior high and high school campuses were more supportive of law enforcement on campus than those from elementary campuses. The findings also revealed differences in awareness of the availability of mental health services for students based on the geographical location of the schools. Participants in urban areas had more knowledge than those in non-urban or rural areas. Further examination of inconsistencies in knowledge and perceptions about emergency preparedness plans among school personnel and further attention to availability of mental health services for students irrespective of the geographical location of the school are needed.

Book Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery in School Libraries

Download or read book Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Recovery in School Libraries written by Christie Kaaland and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When disaster strikes, school librarians can play a key role in keeping kids safe. This is the only book written specifically to provide school librarians with emergency preparedness and recovery tools as well as curricular tie-ins. No school is immune to disaster, whether in the form of a natural event like a tornado or a tragedy like the violence that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The key to minimizing injury or death in an emergency is preparedness—something the school librarian is uniquely positioned to lead. This must-have book will show you how to be proactive in getting your school ready for the worst. It provides comprehensive preparedness and recovery plans, check lists, and curricular recommendations on preparedness that can be tailored to your individual library and community. Covering natural disasters, human-made disasters, and school violence, the book shows you how to conduct drills, assess vulnerabilities and risk, communicate preparedness plans, and use bibliotherapy for disaster recovery. It also describes how your library can be a safe haven for students who feel disconnected, bullied, or otherwise disenfranchised. Although the book is primarily intended for school librarians, classroom teachers will also find many ideas here for helping students be better prepared for disasters, whatever their cause or severity.

Book Preparedness Response and Recovery Considerations for Children and Families

Download or read book Preparedness Response and Recovery Considerations for Children and Families written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparedness, Response and Recovery Considerations for Children and Families is the summary of a workshop convened in June, 2013 by the Institute of Medicine Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Catastrophic Events to discuss disaster preparedness, response, and resilience relative to the needs of children and families, including children with special health care needs. Traditional and non-traditional medical and public health stakeholders from across federal, state, and local government health care coalitions, community organizations, school districts, child care providers, hospitals, private health care providers, insurers, academia, and other partners in municipal planning met to review existing tools and frameworks that can be modified to include children's needs; identify child-serving partners and organizations that can be leveraged in planning to improve outcomes for children; highlight best practices in resilience and recovery strategies for children; and raise awareness of the need to integrate children's considerations throughout local and state emergency plans. Communities across the United States face the threat of emergencies and disasters almost every day, natural and man-made, urban and rural, large and small. Although children represent nearly 25 percent of the U.S. population, current state and local disaster preparedness plans often do not include specific considerations for children and families. The preparedness and resilience of communities related to children will require a systems framework for disaster preparedness across traditional and non-traditional medical and public health stakeholders, including community organizations, schools, and other partners in municipal planning. This report examines resilience strategies that lead to successful recovery in children after a disaster and discusses current approaches and interventions to improve recovery in children.

Download or read book Disaster Risk Reduction Management Practices of School Principals written by Edwin Jasojaso and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-04-16 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2029 in the subject Organisation and administration - Disaster control, grade: 93.4, , language: English, abstract: This study determined the level of DRRM practices of school principals in the ten (10) public elementary school of the fifth district of the division of city schools manila for SY 2019-2020. The study with the title "Disaster Risk Reduction Management Practices of School Principals: Towards School Based Policy Guidelines" is especially designed to meet the requirements of the ever-changing needs of the schools in managing disaster. The prevailing situations our nation is facing nowadays is the compelling reason why this study came into existence. Children, most especially in elementary schools are the ones to benefit if practices in DRRM are presented firmly and effectively. As provided by RA 10121 or the Philippine DRRM act of 2010, the concern agencies must deliver or provide a proactive approach in addressing risk in disaster, wherein its main focus is to prepare locals from imminent risk during disaster. It also stipulated the need of integrating DRR to school curricula in all levels and areas. The results and recommendations of this study, though it is everybody’s concern, is pointing to the school principals that they should carry the burden on addressing the need of properly practiced DRR management to create a safe learning environment.

Book THE CONSEQUENCES OF DISASTERS

Download or read book THE CONSEQUENCES OF DISASTERS written by Helen James and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Consequences of Disasters: Demographic, Planning and Policy Implications presents innovative multi-disciplinary perspectives on how people and societies respond to, and recover from sudden, unexpected crisis events like natural disasters which impact tragically on the established patterns and structures of their lives. Through detailed empirical analysis which employs both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, the twenty-two chapters in this fine volume explore these critical issues. Chapters have a wide global range across both democratic and transforming governance systems which spotlight the many different ways in which different political jurisdictions respond to the demographic, planning and policy implications of the natural disasters affecting their citizens. The authors collectively provide insights into varying socio-cultural and political disaster frameworks from China, Japan, the USA, New Zealand, Myanmar, Indonesia, Taiwan, Iran, The Philippines and Pakistan. Taking the conceptual and analytical lens of social capital, family formation and migration patterns, the authors employ comparative demographic, anthropological and sociological approaches to present the human security contexts of natural disasters when they unexpectedly wreak havoc on human societies, and the coping and response behaviors they adopt, develop and use as survivors as they set about re-building their lives over periods that can extend over several years. This book provides many innovative insights which will be of value to disaster policy experts, practitioners in the humanitarian field, civil society and government sectors and researchers engaged in disaster recovery and reconstruction practice and research.
