Disable Your Disability is a journey into self-discovery, a look into the gift of embracing circumstances that hold us back, and powerful concepts with sure-fire methods for taking action toward living the healthy life we deserve. If you live with a physical disability, limited mobility, or something else that is holding you back from living a healthy lifestyle, Tony's personal story, coupled with his clear and concise methodology, will help you gain insight and confidence, and get you clear on what it will take for you to achieve your health and fitness goals. Because he was born with a rare bone disorder, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bones), Tony used a wheelchair and crutches through his childhood and into his early 20's. When he was 24 years old, he finally took his first unassisted steps and started walking. Because he was scared of breaking more bones and had always been told to 'be careful', Tony remained inactive through his 20's and 30's and his overall health suffered. At age 42, he found himself overweight, dealing with pain in his legs, hips, and back, and using medications to suppress daily heartburn. After a visit to the doctor, he knew something had to change. Tony finally embraced his disability and transformed his entire life! Within 8 months, he began doing things physically that he, and many others, never thought possible. Now, through his dedication to helping others, Tony is coaching, speaking, and building an unstoppable online presence to spread the word that everyone deserves to live a healthy and happy life!

Book Being Heumann

Download or read book Being Heumann written by Judith Heumann and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year for Nonfiction "...an essential and engaging look at recent disability history."— Buzzfeed One of the most influential disability rights activists in US history tells her personal story of fighting for the right to receive an education, have a job, and just be human. A story of fighting to belong in a world that wasn’t built for all of us and of one woman’s activism—from the streets of Brooklyn and San Francisco to inside the halls of Washington—Being Heumann recounts Judy Heumann’s lifelong battle to achieve respect, acceptance, and inclusion in society. Paralyzed from polio at eighteen months, Judy’s struggle for equality began early in life. From fighting to attend grade school after being described as a “fire hazard” to later winning a lawsuit against the New York City school system for denying her a teacher’s license because of her paralysis, Judy’s actions set a precedent that fundamentally improved rights for disabled people. As a young woman, Judy rolled her wheelchair through the doors of the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare in San Francisco as a leader of the Section 504 Sit-In, the longest takeover of a governmental building in US history. Working with a community of over 150 disabled activists and allies, Judy successfully pressured the Carter administration to implement protections for disabled peoples’ rights, sparking a national movement and leading to the creation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Candid, intimate, and irreverent, Judy Heumann’s memoir about resistance to exclusion invites readers to imagine and make real a world in which we all belong.

Book excerpt: Our new publication was created for seniors and individuals whose lives have been impacted by changes in their overall health. Disabilities can, and do, happen quickly. One moment we're healthy and carefree. In the next moment our lives have been changed irreversibly, facing physical challenges never before experienced. The transition from full good health to having a disability has been described as being like "walking into a wall" - except much worse. After recovering from the initial disorientation, immediate access to reliable, current, comprehensive lifestyle change information will be needed. Purchasing a wheelchair for the first time, should it be manual or powered? A person who uses a wheelchair necessitates detailed, reliable information on Ramps and Accessible Thresholds. You may also need to consider the purchase of a stair lift if your home has more than one floor.Modifying your home of many years will be another new challenge so suggestions on Home Modifications will be value-added. Accessible Housing for Families with Disabilities provides suggestions on adapting the home to accommodate your specific disability. Studies show that people who become partially (and not totally) disabled basically stop traveling. Vacations to foreign lands quickly become a memory. Book Surrender to Being Different

Download or read book Surrender to Being Different written by Lina Pane and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surrender to Being Different is about understanding how we see ourselves, and how we define ourselves, as having a disability or being different. It is about "playing the part" as an award winning actor might, this role which we often play without realising it. It is about the disconnection and the mess of being you, until the breakthrough of the connection. It's about acknowledging how you feel, so you can say, "Yes finally let me just surrender to being me," and just float in non-resistance. It will be okay, and you can colour outside the lines if you choose. You are more than enough. The book is about accepting who you are, and liking what you see in the mirror. The book explains how to move to the connection, the acceptance and the place of surrender but first you need to sit in the mess, the gunk, in what Lina calls the disconnection. There are exercises throughout the book too to help the reader in their journey. Lina believes that what stops us in our tracks too, is not our disability but our thoughts. Believe you can't and you won't but if you believe you can and you will. She would know as has a physical disability called Arthrogryposis. Lina's passion and work is about making change and challenging the status quo and being the best you can be no matter who you are. The world makes challenges for us too, but sometimes it starts with looking in the mirror at our self, which shows where the challenge comes from! If you say I can't enough times, you'll start to believe it! We would rather you look in the mirror and say, "Yes, I can! Watch me!" Lina also want you to feel the feelings, be aware of the thoughts that you have, and create acceptance that needs to happen. You can't change the future by pretending in the present, that the past wasn't there. Lina will inspire you to take action with your own life, as anything is possible in life, if you only believe and then take action.
