Book Dangerous Music Explicit Lyrics in the United States of America

Download or read book Dangerous Music Explicit Lyrics in the United States of America written by Julian Weller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the history of music warning labels, specifically the Parental Advisory Label (PAL), and the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC). It aims to answer these questions: How could the PMRC trigger a debate on music lyrics as a negative influence on children that led to the introduction of the PAL in the long run? What did the implementation of the PAL warning mean for musicians and how had the perception of music changed so that the advisory label was deemed necessary? The central thesis is that through the discourse on explicit lyrics, certain music was marked as an actual threat to children and society and consequently started to be perceived as such. By the way in which the discourse evolved, and how other actors conducted themselves in the debates, this understanding of certain music was repeatedly (re-)negotiated and connected to other current discourses, such as discourses on family values, sexuality, youth culture, generational conflicts and social problems. Through this, the understanding of certain music as a threat to children and society was constantly renewed. The book analyses the PMRC’s campaign on explicit lyrics and provides insights into their strategy and success from a historical perspective.

Download or read book Wake Up written by Rev. Marlon F. Hall and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First an expression of black urban youth, Hip Hop music continues to expand as a cultural expression of youth and, now, young adults more generally. As a cultural phenomenon, it has even become integral to the worship experience of a growing number of churches who are reaching out to these groups. This includes not just African American churches but churches of all ethnic groups. Once seen as advocating violence, Hip Hop can be the Church’s agent of salvation and praise to transform society and reach youth and young adults in greater numbers. After looking at Hip Hop’s socio-historical context including its African roots, Wake Up shows how Hip Hop has come to embody the worldview of growing numbers of youth and young adults in today’s church. The authors make the case that Hip Hop represents the angst and hope of many youth and young adults and that by examining the inherent religious themes embedded in the music, the church can help shape the culture of hip-hop by changing its own forms of preaching and worship so that it can more effectively offer a message of repentance and liberation.

Book Be the Adult

Download or read book Be the Adult written by F. Lance Hoopes and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2024-04-16 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I will never forget the moment I first learned to “Be the Adult.” It was in my first job as an administrator after many years of teaching. I bested a kid in a passionate argument and sent him back to class while my boss and mentor looked on. I glowed with pride until he quietly deflated me with the five words that changed the rest of my career: “Remember, Lance: You’re the adult.” That phrase floods my mind with stories, the stories in this book. Some are heroic, some are embarrassing, but all of them can help you learn what I learned. I had to be the adult in a band room facing hostile kids, and facing students who played a passage so beautifully it brought tears to my eyes. I had to be the adult on 110-degree Tucson, Arizona, football fields, in band buses far from home — and facing concerned superintendents and furious teachers as an administrator. Schools can and do change students for the better, but only on one condition: Someone has to Be the Adult.

Book Islam and Popular Culture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Karin van Nieuwkerk
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2016-04-12
  • ISBN : 147730889X
  • Pages : 405 pages

Download or read book Islam and Popular Culture written by Karin van Nieuwkerk and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular culture serves as a fresh and revealing window on contemporary developments in the Muslim world because it is a site where many important and controversial issues are explored and debated. Aesthetic expression has become intertwined with politics and religion due to the uprisings of the “Arab Spring,” while, at the same time, Islamist authorities are showing increasingly accommodating and populist attitudes toward popular culture. Not simply a “westernizing” or “secularizing” force, as some have asserted, popular culture now plays a growing role in defining what it means to be Muslim. With well-structured chapters that explain key concepts clearly, Islam and Popular Culture addresses new trends and developments that merge popular arts and Islam. Its eighteen case studies by eminent scholars cover a wide range of topics, such as lifestyle, dress, revolutionary street theater, graffiti, popular music, poetry, television drama, visual culture, and dance throughout the Muslim world from Indonesia, Africa, and the Middle East to Europe. The first comprehensive overview of this important subject, Islam and Popular Culture offers essential new ways of understanding the diverse religious discourses and pious ethics expressed in popular art productions, the cultural politics of states and movements, and the global flows of popular culture in the Muslim world.

Book The Man Who Ran Washington

Download or read book The Man Who Ran Washington written by Peter Baker and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times • The Washington Post • Fortune • Bloomberg From two of America's most revered political journalists comes the definitive biography of legendary White House chief of staff and secretary of state James A. Baker III: the man who ran Washington when Washington ran the world. For a quarter century, from the end of Watergate to the aftermath of the Cold War, no Republican won the presidency or ran the White House without the advice of James Addison Baker III. A scion of Texas aristocracy who became George H. W. Bush’s tennis partner, Baker had never worked in Washington until a devastating family tragedy struck when he was thirty-nine. Within a few years, he was leading Gerald Ford’s campaign and would go on to manage a total of five presidential races and win a sixth for George W. Bush in a Florida recount. He ran Ronald Reagan’s White House and became the most consequential secretary of state since Henry Kissinger. Ruthlessly partisan during campaign season, Baker became an indispensable dealmaker after the election. He negotiated with Democrats at home and Soviets abroad, rewrote the tax code, assembled the coalition that won the Gulf War, brokered the reunification of Germany, and helped bring a decades-long nuclear superpower standoff to an end. Brilliantly crafted by Peter Baker of The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker, The Man Who Ran Washington is a page-turning study in the acquisition, exercise, and preservation of power in late twentieth-century America and the story of Washington when Washington ran the world. Their masterly biography is necessary reading and destined to become a classic.

Book excerpt: Book 4 in Ved Mehta's Continents of Exile series. Nearly 50 years in the making, Continents of Exile is one of the great works of twentieth-century autobiography: the epic chronicle of an Indian family in the twentieth century. From 1930s India to 1950s Oxford and literary New York in the 1960s-80s, this is the story of the post-colonial twentieth century, as uniquely experienced and vividly recounted by Ved Mehta. Set against the distant storm of the Second World War and the waning light of British Raj, Ved Mehta's brilliant memoir Ledge Between the Streams tells of an Indian childhood and the coming to terms with growing blindness: how, despite his disability, he learned English, Braille, horseback riding, bicycling, touch typing, and roller skating.
