Partindo da compreensão de que o exercício do trabalho é elemento fundamental da condição humana e intimamente ligado à dignidade, a presente obra analisa os desafios e perspectivas para uma efetiva colaboração entre a Organização Internacional do Trabalho (OIT) e Organização Mundial do Comércio (OMC). Desde sua fundação, a OIT afirma o princípio de que o trabalho não pode ser considerado um mero artigo de comércio. A organização orienta-se por uma racionalidade própria à proteção internacional dos direitos humanos relacionados ao trabalho. Por sua vez, a OMC regula o sistema multilateral de comércio, orientando-se por uma racionalidade afeita ao direito econômico e dotada de um eficaz sistema de solução de controvérsias. Embora haja notáveis pontos de convergência entre os campos regulados pelos respectivos subsistemas jurídicos, o diálogo entre as organizações tem se demonstrado insuficiente. Questões trabalhistas foram formalmente excluídas do escopo da OMC desde o início de seu funcionamento. O estudo das respectivas estruturas organizacionais e de seus subsistemas jurídicos permite entrever perspectivas para uma harmonização entre os subsistemas.
