Download or read book Directory of Reno and Sparks 1915 written by Nevada Directory Publishing Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directory of Reno and Sparks, 1915: With a Business Directory of Carson, Gardnerville, Minden, Virginia City and Fallon, Nevada; Including Names, Occupations and Street Addresses of All Individuals, Firms and Corporations Reno is the county seat of Washoe county, in the extreme western portion of Nevada, extending along the California state line for more than 200 miles, north to the Oregon state line. The city is on the main line of the Southern Pacific transcontinental railroad, distant miles east of San Francisco and about 550 miles west of Salt Lake. From here the nevada-california-oregon railway runs north to Lakeview, Oregon, and the Virginia Truckee south to Carson, the state capital, and Virginia City, the great mining camp on the Comstock; with a branch from Carson to Minden, the trading center of the Carson valley, one of the most fertile and highly cultivated in the state. It also has direct rail connection, through a branch of the Southern Pacific, with southern Nevada and California touching Tonopah, Goldfield and other mining camps in that region. Another branch of the same road, to Fallon, brings within its trade area the farmers on the truckee-carson irrigation project, a government enterprise that has cost approximately eight million dollars and reclaimed acres of agricultural lands. The Truckee river runs through the center of Reno, adding greatly to the beauty of the town. But it also serves an utilitarian purpose.' It waters a broad, fertile valley that is thickly populated with prosperous farmers who trade here exclusively. Reno is therefore naturally and inevitably the commercial and financial center, the metropolis of the state. Its geographical position in relation to the resources of the state, and transportation facilities insure this commanding position. The town is Nevada's beauty spot, an oasis of verdue in a wide expanse of browns and grays. It is a community of attractive homes, many of them being really elegant residences. The business district is substantially built, with a number of blocks that would be a credit to a city of several time its size, buildings that are the last word in modern construction. It likewise has every convenience that life in this age demands, _ an excellent water system, gas, electric light and power, water generated, and. Adequate street railway facilities. Its schools are its special pride. Here is located the State University, that is doing a splendid educational work, devoting especial attention to the scientific and practical development of the state's resources. The public schools are housed in'*-buildings commodious, convenient and as architecturally attractive as can -be found anywhere in America. Men and women of a-bilty and experience are employed as instructors and results attained are highly gratifying. Reno's population, estimated on the number of names in this directory, employing the usual ratio in western cities, is about At the time of publication, June, 1915, there are many hundreds of newcomers here, apparently with the intention of remaining permanently; so a rapid increase of population is anticipated and probable.
