Download or read book Post theory written by Martin McQuillan and published by Edinburgh : Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of this work addresses the current state of critical theory, and questions the post-ness of the epistemological space after the event of theory as an institutional practice. The second part contains examples of the type of work theory has made possible, demonstrating the new directions opening up both within theory itself and in cross-disciplinary study as a result of theory. In this sense, post can be understood to be in dialogue with issues relating to postmodernism, post-Marxism and post-feminism.

Book New Directions in Literary History

Download or read book New Directions in Literary History written by Ralph Cohen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, New Directions in Literary History is a comprehensive attempt to present approaches to literary studies that have developed from phenomenology, stylistics and linguistics, Marxist reconsiderations of literature, interdisciplinary studies and analysis of reader response. Written by an international group of scholars, the essays are taken from the pages of New Literary History. They range from the Middle Ages to contemporary literature. European and American literary critics are here represented, together with an art critic, a philosopher and a novelist. Their essays deal with crucial problems in the study of literature: the relationship of the contemporary critic to works of the past; the place of method in literary study; how reading takes place; the role of the reader in different literary periods in providing a guide to interpretation; the language of literature and its relation to natural or ordinary language; the origin and decline of literary forms; and what constitutes literature, especially in the relation between fictional character and autobiography. Although the essays are essentially concerned with theoretical issues, they also examine the practical applications to literature. Students of English literature and literary theory will find this book particularly interesting.

Book The Direction of Literary Theory

Download or read book The Direction of Literary Theory written by S. Earnshaw and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-10-25 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An initial proposition is made that literary theory is divided into two broad, antithetical camps - one where the focus is purely textual, the other where the focus is on context. Section One is devoted to resolving this central dichotomy by examining issues that are highly contentious within literary theory (the author, intention, value, postmodernism and history). Section Two critiques theory as a whole within the arts and discusses its possible existence in this non-rational environment. It articulates a number of possible responses with consequences for future research and education.

Book The Ethics of Latin American Literary Criticism

Download or read book The Ethics of Latin American Literary Criticism written by Erin Graff Zivin and published by Palgrave MacMillan. This book was released on 2007-07-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last several decades have witnessed a reorientation of the political and a globalization of the cultural in Latin America, shifting literature's function as a homogenizing, citizen-forming institution to a more dispersed, fragmented, and (potentially) democratic and liberating practice. At the same time, and perhaps in response to this cultural shift, the field of Latin American literary studies has expanded to include cultural studies, postcolonial theory, performance studies, gender studies, Africana studies, and subaltern studies, at once expanding and disrupting the boundaries of literature, criticism, and of Latin America itself. In light of these dramatic transformations within a globalized Latin American culture, as well as within the field of Latin American literary studies itself, what value can we attribute to aesthetics today? Is a reconsideration of artistic creation a mere return to the hegemonic lettered city described by Angel Rama? Or can we begin to think about an "ethical potential" inscribed within the act of reading, that is, an encounter with otherness that irreversibly alters the reading subject?

Book Directions in Literary Criticism

Download or read book Directions in Literary Criticism written by Stanley Weintraub and published by University Park : Pennsylvania State University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present there do not seem to be any fashions in literary criticism--an impression that this book reinforces. Each individual in this gathering of critics was invited to practice his trade in whatever fashion he liked, and the results show that criticism of literature is going off in as many directions as literature itself. In addition to poet and scholar, here we have novelist, essayist, folklorist, psychologist, and biographer. Several selections carry on the poem as an act of criticism; the others take their evidence from sources that range from bibliographic data to the facts of composition and the record of stage interpretation, from the reaction of audiences to the response of the computer. As this delightfully eclectic forum of distinguished critics shows, literary criticism at its best takes on widely ranging perspectives expressed in a variety of forms and styles. Book Directions for Criticism

Download or read book Directions for Criticism written by Murray Krieger and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays in and on recent critical theory and its backgrounds attempts to clarify what is probably one of the most complex situations in the history of literary criticism. The classifier of methodologies can look back only with nostalgia at the simplicity of his problems with the limited warfare among New Critics, biographical and historical scholars, neo-humanists, neo-Aristotelians, and old-style Freudians and Marxists. Much more confusing these days are the challenges not only to critical method but to the very assumption that there is an object or language for criticism. The baffling array of structuralisms, post structuralisms, and phenomenologies, as well as the still-lingering versions of older positions now modified to confront these revolutionary alternatives, largely continental, calls for whatever light can be shed by knowing and intelligent observer-participants. The contributors to this volume, which appeared originally as the Summer 1976 issue of Contemporary Literature, have varying commitments and interests, but all are distinguished commentators on and makers of theory. The occasion, created to simulate them to produce studies that reflect on one another, was an imagined symposium on a half-dozen representative anthologies of recent criticism. These authors also formed the Board of Senior Fellows of the first session of the School of Theory and Criticism at the University of California, Irvine, where the journal edition was much discussed and debated.

Book excerpt: Literary Theory and Criticism: An Introduction provides an accessible overview of major figures and movements in literary theory and criticism from antiquity to the twenty-first century. An introductory chapter provides an overview of some of the major issues within literary theory and criticism; further chapters survey theory and criticism in antiquity, the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the nineteenth century. For twentieth- and twenty-first-century theory, the discussion is subdivided into separate chapters on formalist, historicist, political, and psychoanalytic approaches. The final chapter applies a variety of theoretical concepts and approaches to two famous works of literature: William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Book The Direction of Literary Theory

Download or read book The Direction of Literary Theory written by Steven Earnshaw and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts from the proposition that literary theory is divided into two broad, antithetical camps. One camp comprises theories which assume that the text itself is the generator of meaning and significance, whereas the other camp holds the basic assumption that meaning and significance are a function of context. The first half is devoted to resolving this central dichotomy by examining issues that are highly contentious within literary theory - the author, intention, value, postmodernism and history. Theory's function within the Arts is then scrutinised in the second half, particularly its existence in this non-rational environment and a variety of possible responses are outlined. All those interested in understanding literary theory today and the possibilities for its future will find this book essential reading.

Book Mute Speech

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacques Rancière
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 0231151039
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Mute Speech written by Jacques Rancière and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jacques Ranciere has continually unsettled political discourse, particularly through his questioning of aesthetic "distributions of the sensible," which configure the limits of what can be seen and said. Widely recognized as a seminal work in Ranciere's corpus, the translation of which is long overdue, Mute Speech is an intellectual tour de force proposing a new framework for thinking about the history of art and literature. Ranciere argues that our current notion of "literature" is a relatively recent creation, having first appeared in the wake of the French Revolution and with the rise of Romanticism. In its rejection of the system of representational hierarchies that had constituted belles-letters, "literature" is founded upon a radical equivalence in which all things are possible expressions of the life of a people. With an analysis reaching back to Plato, Aristotle, the German Romantics, Vico, and Cervantes and concluding with brilliant readings of Flaubert, Mallarme, and Proust, Ranciere demonstrates the uncontrollable democratic impulse lying at the heart of literature's still-vital capacity for reinvention."--Publisher description.

Book New Directions in Ecofeminist Literary Criticism

Download or read book New Directions in Ecofeminist Literary Criticism written by Andrea Campbell and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As ecofeminism continues to gain attention from multiple academic discourses, the field of literary criticism has been especially affected by this philosophy/social movement. Scholars using ecofeminist literary criticism are making new and important arguments concerning literature across the spectrum and issues of environment, race, class, gender, sexuality, and other forms of oppression. The essays in New Directions in Ecofeminist Literary Criticism highlight the intersections of these oppressions through the works of different authors including Barbara Kingsolver, Ruth Ozeki, Linda Hogan and Flora Nwapa, and demonstrate the expansion of ecofeminist literary criticism to a more global scale as well as important connections with the field of environmental justice. This collection offers fresh insight and expands the important discussion surrounding the field of ecofeminism and literature.
