Book excerpt: With the emergence of advanced propulsion systems such as liquid propellant (LP), electrothermal-chemical (ETC), electromagnetic (EM), conventional hypervelocity, and in-bore ramjet, the measurement of combustion phenomena has become more complex. The data associated with these systems can be rich in high-frequency components, and share similar transient behavior. Measurement techniques associated with conventional solid propellant systems are not always capable of accurately recording these phenomena. The accuracy of pressure and acceleration measurements in combustion chambers, barrels, and on-board projectiles has been compromised by the lack of a fundamental understanding of the effects of the mounting configuration and the mechanical and electrical components of the transducer on the integrity of the measurement. Consequently, the system development and technical understanding of the physical processes involved in the ignition and combustion of such advanced propulsion systems have been compromised. A workshop was needed to bring together experts from the aforementioned and related communities to disseminate knowledge of lessons learned and to discuss the techniques necessary to make high-fidelity pressure measurements in these environments. This report will state the objectives, identify the participants who met to address them, provide a list of the technical presentations made, present highlights from these presentations and the discussions that they prompted, and end with conclusions and recommendations which came out of the workshop.

Variations of the thermal theory approach could not reproduce the measured rates with Reasonable assignment of unmeasurable parameters in the models. Attempts were made with the Kooker-Zinn, Zeldovich, and flame sheet approaches to the gas phase heat feedback. Calculated transients were smaller than the measurements. Predictions of very steep runaway transients were shown to be either a linearly unstable initial condition, or unreproducible by an method.

Book excerpt: The response of solid propellant combustion to steep pressurization pulses has been calculated with consideration of temperature dependent thermal properties of the solid and quasi-steady gas phase. Response has been calculated for a uniformly distributed gas phase reaction and for the Zeldovich heat feedback theory with variations in surface heat release, pressurization rate, and thermal properties of the solid. Regression rate excursions of two to three times the quasi-steady rate are calculated for nominal values of propellent properties. For pressurization rates approximating calculated DDT rates, the excursions survive at high pressure. Higher assumed surface heat release produces sharper response in the distributed flame models. The Zeldovich approach predicts protracted excursions from quasi-steady behavior.
