Book Consolidated undrained Direct simple Shear Tests on Saturated Clays

Download or read book Consolidated undrained Direct simple Shear Tests on Saturated Clays written by Charles Cushing Ladd and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of consolidated-undrained direct-simple shear tests are presented on seven normally consolidated clays of widely varying composition and plasticity. The effect of overconsolidation ratio is studied with six of these clays. The tests were performed with the Geonor device, which uses a 8.0 cm dia. sample enclosed in a wire-reinforced rubber membrane. The vertical load is varied to maintain constant volume during undrained shear. Consolidated undrained direct-simple shear tests are easier to perform than K sub o - consolidated triaxial tests with pore pressure measurements. The test also yields data during consolidation similar to that obtained from conventional oedometer tests. (Modified author abstract).

Book Fundamentals of Foundation Engineering

Download or read book Fundamentals of Foundation Engineering written by Chang-Yu Ou and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-09-18 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to introduce the principle and design of various foundations, covering shallow foundations, mat foundations, earth retaining structures, excavations, pile foundations, and slope stability. Since the analysis and design of a foundation are based on the soil properties under short-term (undrained) or long-term (drained) conditions, the assessment of soil properties from the geotechnical site investigation and the concept of drained or undrained soil properties are discussed in the first two chapters. Foundation elements transfer various load combinations from the superstructure to the underlying soils or rocks. The load transfer mechanisms, vertical stress or earth pressure distributions, and failure modes of each foundation type are clearly explained in this book. After understanding the soil responses subjected to the loadings from the foundation, the design methods, required factors of safety, and improvement measures for each foundation type are elaborated. This book presents both theoretical explication and practical applications for readers to easily comprehend the theoretical background, design methods, and practical applications and considerations. Each chapter provides relevant exercise examples and a problem set for self-practice. The analysis methods introduced in the book can be applied in actual analysis and design as they contain the most up-to-date knowledge of foundation design. This book is suitable for teachers and students to use in foundation engineering courses and engineers who are engaged in foundation design to create a technically sound, construction-feasible, and economical design of the foundation system.

Book The Mechanical Behavior of Salt X

Download or read book The Mechanical Behavior of Salt X written by J.H.P. de Bresser and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-07-05 with total page 901 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock salt formations have long been recognized as a valuable resource - not only for salt mining but for construction of oil and gas storage caverns and for isolation of radioactive and other hazardous wastes. Current interest is fast expanding towards construction and re-use of solution-mined caverns for storage of renewable energy in the form of hydrogen, compressed air and other gases. Evaluating the long term performance and safety of such systems demands an understanding of the coupled mechanical behavior and transport properties of salt. This volume presents a collection of 60 research papers defining the state-of-the-art in the field. Topics range from fundamental work on deformation mechanisms and damage of rock salt to compaction of engineered salt backfill. The latest constitutive models are applied in computational studies addressing the evolution and integrity of storage caverns, repositories, salt mines and entire salt formations, while field studies document ground truth at multiple scales. The volume is structured into seven themes: Microphysical processes and creep models Laboratory testing Geological isolation systems and geotechnical barriers Analytical and numerical modelling Monitoring and site-specific studies Cavern and borehole abandonment and integrity Energy storage in salt caverns The Mechanical Behavior of Salt X will appeal to graduate students, academics, engineers and professionals working in the fields of salt mechanics, salt mining and geological storage of energy and wastes, but also to researchers in rock physics in general.

Book Geotechnical Problem Solving

Download or read book Geotechnical Problem Solving written by John C. Lommler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-02 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devised with a focus on problem solving, Geotechnical Problem Solving bridges the gap between geotechnical and soil mechanics material covered in university Civil Engineering courses and the advanced topics required for practicing Civil, Structural and Geotechnical engineers. By giving newly qualified engineers the information needed to apply their extensive theoretical knowledge, and informing more established practitioners of the latest developments, this book enables readers to consider how to confidently approach problems having thought through the various options available. Where various competing solutions are proposed, the author systematically leads through each option, weighing up the benefits and drawbacks of each, to ensure the reader can approach and solve real-world problems in a similar manner The scope of material covered includes a range of geotechnical topics, such as soil classification, soil stresses and strength and soil self-weight settlement. Shallow and deep foundations are analyzed, including special articles on laterally loaded piles, retaining structures including MSE and Tieback walls, slope and trench stability for natural, cut and fill slopes, geotechnical uncertainty, and geotechnical LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design).
