Download or read book Direct Seeding of Pine and Spruce in Southwestern Maine written by Thomas Wright McConkey and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2In view of this continued emphasis on site and seedbed, a direct-seeding study involving five species on two sites was begun in the fall of 1958 in southwestern Maine. The intent was to gather some preliminary information, by species, about the influence of soil type and seedbed-preparation measures on initial seedling establishment.S3

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2The authors have attempted to include in this bibliography all articles that contain significant original information about pitch pine or that are comprehensive review; Secondary sources, such as textbooks that briefly review the literature on specific subjects, are omitted. Articles on local floras are included only if they provide new, revised, or more detailed information about the distribution or abundance of pitch pine.S3.
Download or read book Improvement in Butt log Grade with Increase in Tree Size for Six Hardwood Species written by George R. Trimble (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Work carried out by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station in West Virginia in the past 12 years provides useful information about the relationships between tree d.b.h. and butt-log grade. The upper logs are not included in the relationships. Being smaller and containing more knots, these upper logs are generally of lower grade than the butt logs. Thus the average grade of all material in the sawlog portion of the tree is generally lower than the average grade of the butt log. In the West Virginia data, species differences in d.b.h.-grade relationship are readily apparent. This inherent tendency for species to have different proportions of the various grades in logs of the same size is a familiar phenomenon to grade-conscious foresters who work with hardwoods. The results in this paper provide a quantitative evaluation of this tendency for six of the local species.S3.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 a survey-type study was conducted to evaluate the performance of forest tree species in established plantings on strip-mine spoils of the Anthracite Region of Pennsylvania. Plantations representing a wide range of site conditions in all four anthracite fields were examined.

Download or read book Some Effects of Paraformaldehyde on Wood Surrounding Tapholes in Sugar Maple Trees written by Alex L. Shigo and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Pills of paraformaldehyde (trioxymethylene) are commonly used in tapholes in sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum Marsh.) to increase the yield of sap collected for making syrup and sugar (2, 4, 5, 8). The explanation offered for this increase in sap yield is that microorganisms in the tapholes (7) cause premature decline and stoppage of the sap flow (1, 6), but that paraformaldehyde increases sap yield by inhibiting their growth (2). But what happens to the tree? To determine the effects of paraformaldehyde on the tissues surrounding tapholes, and on the microorganisms in those tissues, sugar maple trees were dissected and studied. This paper is a report on that study.S3.
