Book Additive Manufacturing of Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Additive Manufacturing of Titanium Alloys written by Bhaskar Dutta and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2016-06-17 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive Manufacturing of Titanium Alloys: State of the Art, Challenges and Opportunities provides alternative methods to the conventional approach for the fabrication of the majority of titanium components produced via the cast and wrought technique, a process which involves a considerable amount of expensive machining. In contrast, the Additive Manufacturing (AM) approach allows very close to final part configuration to be directly fabricated minimizing machining cost, while achieving mechanical properties at least at cast and wrought levels. In addition, the book offers the benefit of significant savings through better material utilization for parts with high buy-to-fly ratios (ratio of initial stock mass to final part mass before and after manufacturing). As titanium additive manufacturing has attracted considerable attention from both academicians and technologists, and has already led to many applications in aerospace and terrestrial systems, as well as in the medical industry, this book explores the unique shape making capabilities and attractive mechanical properties which make titanium an ideal material for the additive manufacturing industry. - Includes coverage of the fundamentals of microstructural evolution in titanium alloys - Introduces readers to the various Additive Manufacturing Technologies, such as Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED) - Looks at the future of Titanium Additive Manufacturing - Provides a complete review of the science, technology, and applications of Titanium Additive Manufacturing (AM)

Book Development of a Burn resistant Titanium Alloy Through the Laser Deposition of Elementally Blended Powders

Download or read book Development of a Burn resistant Titanium Alloy Through the Laser Deposition of Elementally Blended Powders written by David Jeffrey Bryan and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Advances in science and industry have always been limited by material selection. Thus, there is a constant push toward stronger, lighter, and cheaper materials. Titanium and its alloys are amongst the most promising because of their high strength to weight ratio. The problem with titanium is that it is difficult and expensive to process. The production of near net-shaped parts by direct laser deposition could result in a significant reduction in weight as well as in manufacturing costs of complex components. Furthermore, direct laser deposition techniques have a number of other potential benefits, including the ability to deposit of graded compositions, elemental blends, composites, and advanced alloys. Burn resistant titanium alloys, such as Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C, are one such advanced alloy system. The deposition and characterization of the Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C alloy from elementally blended powders was the focus of this study. A series of binary, ternary, and quaternary were deposited and characterized to study the fundamental processing involved with the deposition of the Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C alloy. The reflectivity issue associated with the processing of elemental aluminum was addressed in the first series of deposits. Porosity difficulties associated with the processing of vanadium powder were overcome by increasing the laser power and decreasing the layer spacing. Compositional inaccuracies resulting from the simultaneous deposition of chromium and aluminum powders were overcome through the addition of elemental carbon as well as a slight modification to the input powder composition. The totality of these results gave a series of processing parameters and an input composition that accurately produced the desired composition upon deposition via the LENS TM process. Microstructural characterization of the resultant deposits was performed using a wide variety of techniques. The microstructure of an arc-melted sample was composed of a ß matrix and approximately 2 volume percent of TiC, while the LENS TM deposited samples had aß matrix and 8 volume percent of TiC and another unidentified carbide. The unidentified carbide is thought to be a substoichiometric carbide that would also account for the large increase in carbide volume fraction seen in the LENS TM deposit. The a phase was not observed in any of the Ti-25V-15Cr-2Al-0.2C samples. Heat-treatments were carried out in order to evaluate the thermal stability of the deposits. The results indicate that the alloy was very stable with a grain size close to 50 μm, a stable volume fraction of carbide of approximately 7%, and a Vickers microhardness between 380 and 410. The addition of erbium to the composition was found to have little effect on the deposit except after solution heat treatment. The erbium precipitated out as a fine dispersion of Er203, between 0.3 and 0.8 volume percent, which was lightly coupled to the carbides.
