Book Genetic Components of Genetic Influence on Traits of Purebred and Crossbred Populations of Swine of Berkshire and Yorkshire Origin

Download or read book Genetic Components of Genetic Influence on Traits of Purebred and Crossbred Populations of Swine of Berkshire and Yorkshire Origin written by Paul T. Bellatty and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purebred and crossbred litters of Yorkshire and Berkshire breeds of swine were evaluated for number of piglets born alive per litter, number of piglets weaned per litter, mean piglet birth weight, mean piglet birth weight adjusted for number of piglets born alive per litter and mean piglet weaning weight. The 632 litters, adjusted to a sow equivalent, were weaned at 56 days. The data were subjected to two analyses; the first calculates paternal, maternal and litter heterosis as the difference between crossbred and purebred means. The second analysis calculates estimates using an additive-dominance model and an epistatic model; model and scale are tested for appropriateness. In the first analysis, litter heterosis estimates tend to be positive, to range between 5% and 11%, and are similar to estimates in the literature. Maternal heterosis estimates are positive for number born and weaned, zero for birth weight and negative for weaning weight. Except weaning weight, these are similar to estimates in the literature. Paternal heterosis estimates are negative for number born and weaning weight and positive for number weaned and birth weight. In the second analysis, which uses both nontransformed and log base 10 transformed data, the additive-dominance model is not appropriate for any trait with nontransformed or transformed scales; estimates are similar to these of the first analysis. The appropriate model is the epistatic model for all traits; the nontransformed scale is appropriate for birth weight adjusted for number born and the transformed scale is appropriate for number born, number weaned, weaning weight and birth weight adjusted for number born. Parameter estimates attaining statistical significance for number born are the mean, maternal additive, paternal dominance, litter dominance, and the litter additive X additive epistatic interaction. For number weaned, significant parameter estimates are the mean, maternal additive, paternal dominance, litter dominance, and litter additive X additive. For birth weight unadjusted for number born, significant estimates are the mean, maternal additive, paternal dominance, and maternal additive X additive; no parameters are significant for birth weight adjusted for number born, Significant estimates for weaning weight are mean, litter additive, maternal dominance, and maternal dominance X dominance. Differences between estimates for the first analysis and the second analysis are large for some estimates of heterosis.

Book Relationship of Piglet Birth Weight with Growth Efficiency Composition and Mortality

Download or read book Relationship of Piglet Birth Weight with Growth Efficiency Composition and Mortality written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were two-fold; first, to estimate to impact of birth weight in a commercial production system on economically important traits; second, to estimate the heritability of individual birth weight and its genetic relationship with economically important traits. To accomplish the first goal two trials were conducted. Both trials involved collecting individual piglet birth weights within 24 hours of birth on a commercial sow farm. All pigs were farrowed from Large White x Landrace sows bred to Duroc boars. In trial one, 5,727 pigs were initially weighed. Individual mortality was tracked and BW weights were collected at weaning and placement in the finisher. Approximately half of the remaining live pigs at finishing placement were followed through finishing and individual BW were collected 16 weeks into finishing. During BW collections, pigs were given a quality score based on BW and health (3 = acceptable weight and no visible injuries/health issues; 2 = somewhat light weight and/or minor injuries/health issues; 1 = severely light weight and/or minor injuries/health). Nonlinear associations for birth weight with BW (weaning, finishing placement, and 16 weeks into finishing), mortality (pre-weaning and nursery), quality score (weaning, finishing placement, and 16 weeks into finishing) were estimated. In each instance as birth weight decreased an unfavorable effect occurred in all traits; impact was especially great for the lightest birth weight pigs. Similarly as birth weight decreased the likelihood of a pig being full value near the end of finishing (combination of the previous traits) decreased. In the second study 440 pigs were transferred to the Swine Evaluation Station (Clayton, NC) to focus on the impact of birth weight on feed efficiency. Pigs were penned by birth weight, and BW and feed intake were tracked through the conclusion of finishing. Light birth weight pigs were more efficient; however, the advantage in efficiency was apparen.

Book Piglet Birth Weight Uniformity as a Predictor of Future Performance

Download or read book Piglet Birth Weight Uniformity as a Predictor of Future Performance written by Samantha Van der Westhuizen and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pig industry is an important and growing economic sector in South Africa and improvement in efficiency is vital. Reproductive traits have become more important as it has been realised that these entail the main source of profit, with the production of many viable offspring. As the focus on increasing litter size has amplified, there has been a concurrent decrease in within-litter birth weight uniformity. A decrease in uniformity has been linked to a decrease in piglet health and welfare, performance, and an increase in management requirements and costs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the merit of including within-litter birth weight uniformity in the breeding objective. An on-farm trial was conducted, that included 40 Duroc, 39 Landrace, and 40 Large White dams. Data was recorded for their first three parities to measure piglet performance, taking into account various effects. Piglet performance was measured using litter traits including number born alive (NBA), individual birth weight (BiW), 21 day weight (21W), weaning weight (28W), and 70 day weight (70W), as well as within-litter birth weight variation (CVB) and survival to weaning (SURV). A general linear model (GLM) was conducted to test the significance of piglet sex, dam breed, sire breed, season and year of birth, farrowing room, weaning room, fostering status (NAT/UNNAT), and the interaction of dam breed with sire breed, as effects. Sire breed and season and year of birth was found to affect NBA in all parities (p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary maternal effects occur whenever a mother’s phenotypic traits directly affect her offspring’s phenotype, independent of the offspring’s genotype. Some of the phenotypic traits that result in maternal effects have a genetic basis, whereas others are environmentally determined. For example, the size of a litter produced by a mammalian mother—a trait with a strong genetic basis—can affect the growth rate of her offspring, while a mother’s dominance rank—an environmentally determined trait—can affect the dominance rank of her offspring. The first volume published on the subject in more than a decade, Maternal Effects in Mammals reflects advances in genomic, ecological, and behavioral research, as well new understandings of the evolutionary interplay between mothers and their offspring. Dario Maestripieri and Jill M. Mateo bring together a learned group of contributors to synthesize the vast literature on a range of species, highlight evolutionary processes that were previously overlooked, and propose new avenues of research. Maternal Effects in Mammals will serve as the most comprehensive compendium on and stimulus for interdisciplinary treatments of mammalian maternal effects.

Book Breeding Focus 2021 Improving Reproduction

Download or read book Breeding Focus 2021 Improving Reproduction written by Susanne Hermesch and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Breeding Focus 2021 - Improving reproduction" is the fourth workshop in the series. The Breeding Focus series was developed to provide an opportunity for exchange between industry and research across a number of agricultural industry sectors. Reproduction is a main economic driver for profitability and genetic gain. Successful reproduction is a complex characteristic comprising the formation of reproductive cells, successful mating and fertilisation, embryonic and fetal growth and eventually a successful birthing event. In livestock species, reproduction traits have mostly low heritabilities, which makes it challenging to improve reproduction as part of a multiple trait breeding objective. The complexity arises not just from the cascade of processes required to result in successful reproduction, but the relevant traits are different in males and females and they are influenced through health and fitness, nutrition, climate and other environmental and management factors.

Book Advances in Fibre Production Science in South American Camelids and other Fibre Animals

Download or read book Advances in Fibre Production Science in South American Camelids and other Fibre Animals written by Martina Gerken and published by Göttingen University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal fibres from South American camelids and other fibre or wool bearing species provide important products for use by the human population. The contemporary context includes the competition with petrocarbon-based artificial fibres and concern about excessive persistence of these in the natural environment. Animal fibres present highly valuable characteristics for sustainable production and processing as they are both natural and renewable. On the other hand, their use is recognised to depend on availability of appropriate quality and quantity, the production of which is underpinned by a range of sciences and processes which support development to meet market requirements. This collection of papers combines international experience from South and North America, China and Europe. The focus lies on domestic South American camelids (alpacas, llamas) and also includes research on sheep and goats. It considers latest advances in sustainable development under climate change, breeding and genetics, reproduction and pathology, nutrition, meat and fibre production and fibre metrology. Publication of this book is supported by the Animal Fibre Working Group of the European Federation of Animal Science (EAAP). ‘Advances in Fibre Production Science in South American Camelids and other Fibre Animals’ addresses issues of importance to scientists and animal breeders, textile processors and manufacturers, specialised governmental policy makers and students studying veterinary, animal and applied biological sciences.

Book Boron in Plant and Animal Nutrition

Download or read book Boron in Plant and Animal Nutrition written by Heiner Goldbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-05-31 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boron '97 meeting was a great success in summarising all recent developments in basic and applied research on boron's function, especially in plants. New techniques have since been developed and new insight has been gained into the role of boron in plant and animal metabolism. Nevertheless, there were still lots of open questions. The aim of the present workshop held in Bonn as a satellite meeting to the International Plant Nutrition Colloquium was thus to gather all actual information which has been gained since the Boron '97 meeting and to compile knowledge, both from animal and plant sciences. Furthermore, applied aspects had to be addressed too, as there is an increasing awareness of boron deficiencies even in crops such as wheat, which have formerly not been considered as responsive to boron application. Genetic differences in boron demand and efficiency within one species are a further important topic which has gained importance since the 1997 meeting. More in-depth knowledge on the mechanisms of boron efficiency are required as an increased efficiency will be one major possibility to maintain and improve crop yields for resource-poor farmers. Nevertheless, it has also clearly been shown that an adequate supply of boron is needed to obtain high yields of crops with a high quality, and that a sustainable agriculture has to provide an adequate boron supply to compensate for inevitable losses through leaching (especially in the humid tropics and temperate regions) and for the boron removal by the crop.
