Download or read book Becoming a Nation written by Jonathan L. Fairbanks and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Even before the American Revolution, the artists and craftsmen of our young country were forging a distinguished American identity through beautiful examples of fine and decorative arts. Many of the finest examples of the work created during the earliest years of the country's history--from 1730 to 1840--were collected by the U.S. Department of State to decorate the reception rooms where important statesmen and diplomats are greeted. Highlights from this prestigious collection of American art and craft will tour in a nationwide exhibition for the first time. Becoming a Nation features more than 100 objects from the exhibition, each accompanied by detailed essays. The book includes paintings by such notable American masters as John Singleton Copley, Gilbert Stuart, and Fitz Hugh Lane; exceptional works of silver by Paul Revere and Myer Myers; and exquisite baroque, rococo, and neoclassical furniture crafted in Portsmouth, Boston, Newport, Philadelphia, and New York. A definitive study, Becoming a Nation recommends itself to experts and amateurs alike"--Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Dominion War, the Klingon cruiser IKS Gorkon is on its way back to the homeworld when it is diverted by a distress call... It is two hundred years since the expanding Klingon Empire discovered an icy planet rich in a valuable mineral, topaline. They named the planet 'taD' - Klingon for 'frozen' - and called its people 'jeghpu'wl' - conquered. It is four years since the Klingon Empire invaded Cardassia, breaching the Khitomer Accords and causing a diplomatic rift with the Federation. On taD, depleted Klingon forces were overthown in a coup d'etat, and the victorious rebels took advantage of the disruption to appeal for recognition to the Federation. Now the Klingons have returned to taD and re-established their control. But the stubborn rebels insist on Federation recognition. A solution to the impasse must be found: a task that falls to the Federation's new ambassador to the Klingon Empire. Worf regards himself as a fighter, not a diplomat. But the Federation disagrees. Now, for the sake of the Empire, Worf must somehow forge a peace between the hardened rebels and the battle-hungry Klingon forces. And as everyone knows, Klingons do not negotiate...

Download or read book The State Department More Than Just Diplomacy written by George Gedda and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-03-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the State Department, image is a daily concern. Many constituencies have to be taken into account in its public declarations: the president, the Congress, the media, the taxpaying public and, finally, the many foreign governments attentive to what the State Department says and does. This book attempts, in large measure, to shed light on matters that the Department prefers not to talk about. A reporter has to be on the beat for a long time to accumulate enough anecdotes to fill even a relatively small book. In my case, my tenure in the building lasted just under 40 years. I have brief profiles on all secretaries I covered (except for two who served very briefly). I have highlighted bitter inter-agency policy struggles--Iran and Iraq are examples. Humor is not ignored on these pages. Nor were the rare instances of murder, two involving career diplomats and another occurring on the Department's seventh floor. At times, American diplomats have faced appalling dangers overseas, leading in some instances to assassinations, hostage takings or bombings of embassies. Every secretary of state travels extensively abroad. I was privileged to accompany nine to more than 80 countries. Some anecdotes I recount relate to trips I did not take but heard about from others. I am sure that many priceless stories, regardless of location, have fled from my memory bank. I have resurrected those that didn't. George Gedda, January 2014, Lake Mary, Fl

Download or read book The Nixon White House Redecoration and Acquisition Program written by Patrick Phillips-Schrock and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A positive legacy of the troubled Nixon administration--and one virtually unknown to the American public--is the extensive acquisition of valuable art and antiques for the White House and the redecoration of the executive mansion by Pat Nixon. With the help of an aggressive curator, Clement Conger, and a talented interior designer, Edward Vason Jones, the First Lady quietly erased much of the historic decor of Jacqueline Kennedy's Camelot and introduced an academic look to the State Rooms which endures to this day. Nixon marked his presidential territory with a complete renovation of the West Wing--a harbinger of the First Lady's plans. They implemented a massive fundraising campaign to bankroll the refurbishment, which resulted in one of the foremost collections of art, art objects, furniture, paintings and sculpture in America. This book presents the never before told story of the Nixons' remodeling of the White House, motivated by the approaching American Bicentennial and a desire to restore respect to the presidency through the arts.
