Download or read book Dior and Roses written by and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exquisite look into the legacy of the rose at the House of Dior, from Christian Dior’s early passion for gardening to contemporary floral-inspired designs. Christian Dior discovered gardening at his childhood home in Granville, France. Roses profoundly influenced the designer, especially with his famous New Look aesthetic, where they were placed beneath the iconic corolla symbol. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Musée Christian Dior in Granville, this volume explores the rose’s importance in Dior’s history. The inspiration for Christian Dior’s flowery vision of femininity runs deep throughout the House’s collections; reinventions by subsequent artistic directors pay homage to Dior’s wish to design dresses for “flower-like women.” A focus on a new variety of rose, the Rose de Granville, underscores the perennial significance of the rose today—from inspiring Haute Couture creations to perfume making. This fascinating immersion in Dior’s universe continues with texts by experts Éric Pujalet-Plàa, Vincent Leret, and Brigitte Richart, accompanied by sublime photographs, including shots by the most acclaimed twentieth-century masters as well as contemporary photography.

  • ISBN : 1802792465
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Little Book of Dior written by Karen Homer and published by Welbeck. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated entry in the stylish series tells the story of groundbreaking designer Christian Dior and the fashion house he founded. Christian Dior's spectacular rise to the upper echelons of Parisian haute couture is one of the most compelling stories of twentieth-century fashion. An art gallerist with a contemporary vision, Dior’s debut collection invented the “new look” silhouette and revolutionized the way women dressed, shopped, and saw themselves. The House of Dior’s unique style blended the traditional, artisanal skills of the French fashion house—tailoring and intricate embellishment—with a modern sensibility. Dior himself helmed the company for only a decade, but it has flourished under the creative direction of some of the most storied names in fashion. Currently, Maria Grazia Chiuri steers the brand as it stays true to its identity—of opulence, femininity, drama, and what Christian Dior called “the complete look,” from garments to perfume and shoes. Little Book of Dior tells the story of Christian Dior’s early life, the brand’s inception, the triumphs of the couture collections on the catwalk and the red carpet, and the brand’s journey after the death of its founder.

Download or read book Dior in Bloom written by Jérôme Hanover and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating Dior's floral inspirations in fashion and perfume, this unique volume features a portfolio of rose portraits by acclaimed fashion photographer Nick Knight. For Christian Dior, perfume was "a door opening into a hidden world." His first, Miss Dior, inspired by the lush gardens of his childhood home in Normandy, forged an inextricable link between his fashion and fragrance creations. Other scents were inspired by evenings in southern France, lit with fireflies and scented with jasmine. The rose bowers of his family home in Granville; his old mill country house; and the Château de la Colle Noire near Grasse--where jasmine, tuberose, and May roses reign supreme and are still cultivated--inspired Dior's most memorable creations. Flowers were also at the heart of Dior's fashion, from the women-flowers that inspired the late 1940s New Look to the swishing, blossom-like ball gowns embroidered with lavish floral motifs. They have inspired all of the designers who followed him at the House of Dior, from Yves Saint Laurent to John Galliano, and Raf Simons to Maria Grazia Chiuri. This extraordinary volume blooms with color and inspiration, and includes rose portraits by Nick Knight, previously unpublished archival documents, exquisite details of embroidery and fabrics, perfumes, fashion sketches, and sublime fashion photographs.

Book Fashioning Fat

Download or read book Fashioning Fat written by Amanda M. Czerniawski and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For two and a half years, Amanda Czerniawski was a sociologist turned plus-size model. Journeying into a world where, as a size 10, she was not considered an average body type, but rather, for the fashion industry, “plus-sized,” Czerniawski studied the standards of work and image production in the plus-sized model industry. Fashioning Fat takes us through a model’s day-to-day activities, first at open calls at modeling agencies and then through the fashion shows and photo shoots. Czerniawski also interviewed 35 plus-size models about their lives in the world of fashion, bringing to life the strange contradictions of being an object of non-idealized beauty. Fashioning Fat shows us that the mission of many of these models is to challenge our standards of beauty that privilege the thin body; they show us that fat can be sexy. Many plus-size models do often succeed in overcoming years of self-loathing and shame over their bodies, yet, as Czerniawski shows, these women are not the ones in charge of beauty’s construction or dissemination. At the corporate level, the fashion industry perpetuates their objectification. Plus-size models must conform to an image created by fashion’s tastemakers, as their bodies must fit within narrowly defined parameters of size and shape—an experience not too different from that of straight-sized models. Ultimately, plus-size models find that they are still molding their bodies to fit an image instead of molding an image of beauty to fit their bodies. A much-needed behind-the-scenes look at this growing industry, Fashioning Fat is a fascinating, unique, and important contribution to our understanding of beauty.

These are just some of the epithets assigned to Andrew Grima, the British genius who marched in the vanguard of a 1960s London-based movement that created a new vocabulary for jewelry design. Jeweler to the royals and the jet set, to the rule makers and the tastemakers, Grima was a feted celebrity who appeared on talk shows, in Pathé newsreels and in advertisements for Canada Dry. This book illuminates the career of a man who participated in a golden age of British creativity. It contains a dazzling array of never-before-seen sketches, designs and photographs from the Grima archives and includes a sparkling preface from the doyen of jewelry experts, TV celebrity Geoffrey Munn.
