Now, in the twenty-first century, Constantine Bacchus, of Greek and Native American heritage, comes to New York. He believes that he is the reincarnation of the god Dionysus because of several drug-induced trips to Mount Olympus. His symbol is a hollowed-out, fifteen-foot totem pole that he uses to dispense his LSD-laced wine at revival-style meetings. Rich and spoiled, Horace Penney is the mayor of the City of New York and aspires to claim the presidency of the United States. When Dion announces that he is holding a freedom festival in New York, Mayor Penney pretends to embrace his cause but instead seizes the opportunity to gain national prominence by denouncing Dion. Feeling betrayed, Dion decides to destroy the mayor. Penney, reacting to the brain-washing of his mother, jails Dion on a trumped-up charge. Despite being imprisoned, Dion sets in motion a plan by which the mayor's drugged mother will kill her own son at the festival in Central Park.

As a play staging political crises provoked by the arrival of the foreign god Dionysus and his ecstatic cult, audiences and readers found resonances with their own cultural moments. This dramatic deity became emblematic of exuberant and liberating spirituality and, at the same time, a symbol of imperial conquest. Thus, readings of the Bacchae frequently foreground conflicts between religious autonomy and political authority, and between ethnic diversity and social cohesion. This cross-disciplinary study traces appropriations and evocations of this drama ranging from the fifth century BCE through Byzantium not only among pagans but also Jews and Christians. Writers variously articulated their religious visions over against Dionysus, often while paradoxically adopting the god's language and symbols. Consequently, imitation and emulati on are at times indistinguishable from polemics and subversion.

The book weaves together scholarly, mytho-poetic, literary critical, biographical, and dramatic genres not only to explore specifics of Nietzsche's "madness," but to question the "reason/madness" opposition in nineteenth and twentieth century thinking. A rational and scholarly study of this period of Nietzsche's "breakdown"--presented through his writings, letters, and poetry in combination with relevant historical documents and other critics' writings--is simultaneously disrupted and questioned by several non-traditional discourses or voices that break in on it. Thus, Ariadne's voice frames and unframes the research context and plays alongside it. Ariadne's voice is poetic, revelatory, rhapsodic, and prophetic, sounding much like Nietzsche's own voice during his "breakdown." Ariadne's discourse attempts to seduce through a non-rational, mytho-poetic love story which culminates in the wedding of Dionysus and Ariadne. Other non-rational discourses, critically developed and based upon the work of Nietzsche, Jean Baudrillard, and Gilles Deleuze, are given voice and work together with Ariadne to counter the usual interpretations of Nietzsche's "madness" and of what "mad" discourse is. These discourses are given the names "catastrophe," "phantasm," and "seduction." The experiment of the book is not only to offer an entirely different perspective on Nietzche's "madness" but to offer and perform new and challenging forms of affirmative discourse.
