Book Dionysos and Immortality

Download or read book Dionysos and Immortality written by Benjamin Ide Wheeler and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dionysos and Immortality: The Greek Faith in Immortality as Affected by the Rise of Individualism As part of the common stock of primitive human thought the Greek inherited the natural consciousness for being as absolute, as unbounded by non-being. To forget is the one gate of annulment The common human belief in the shadowy second-self, revealed, it may well be, in the experiences of sleep and dreams, swoons and ecstasies, was also his belief, and to him man was body and soul When a man dies, the soul issues forth from the body to seek other residence. And not man's life alone is thus dual; all life, of beast, of tree, of the river current, of the fountain, of the wind and the storm-cloud, is made up of body and soul For the primitive Greek as for the primitive man, there was no other way in which to think of life. Book Gender and Immortality

Download or read book Gender and Immortality written by Deborah Lyons and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the topic of ancient Greek hero cult has been the focus of considerable discussion among classicists. Little attention, however, has been paid to female heroized figures. Here Deborah Lyons argues for the heroine as a distinct category in ancient Greek religious ideology and daily practice. The heroine, she believes, must be located within a network of relations between male and female, mortal and immortal. Using evidence ranging from Homeric epic to Attic vase painting to ancient travel writing, she attempts to re-integrate the feminine into our picture of Greek notions of the hero. According to Lyons, heroines differ from male heroes in several crucial ways, among which is the ability to cross the boundaries between mortal and immortal. She further shows that attention to heroines clarifies fundamental Greek ideas of mortal/immortal relationships. The book first discusses heroines both in relation to heroes and as a separate religious and mythic phenomenon. It examines the cultural meanings of heroines in ritual and representation, their use as examples for mortals, and their typical "biographies." The model of "ritual antagonism," in which two mythic figures represented as hostile share a cult, is ultimately modified through an exploration of the mythic correspondences between the god Dionysos and the heroines surrounding him, and through a rethinking of the relationship between Iphigeneia and Artemis. An appendix, which identifies more than five hundred heroines, rounds out this lively work. Originally published in 1997. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all humane studies, while knowledge advances, certain works retain a classic quality which puts them beyond the reach of time. Much of 'Psyche' possesses this enduring quality. . . . To a large extent Rohde succeeded in his ideal of detachment and brought to light a new and truer conception of the development of Greek religion which in its broad outlines can hardly be shaken. . . . The study of religion is to a great extent a psychological study, and we have the advances of psychology to reckon with. Yet there are some minds large enough to discount much of the progress of the coming years. This perhaps as much as anything is what entitles a work to be called a classic. They have an insight which ensures that new discoveries will enlarge and confirm rather than destroy their work. No psychologist, surely, will quarrel with Rohde's description of the way in which, in religious ceremonies, the elements of ecstasy and intoxication, instead of being suppressed, were turned to therapeutic ends; or how in cathartic rituals no moral purpose was involved. . . . 'Psyche' outlives, and will continue to outlive, criticism, and will never fail to bring interest and enlightenment to its readers. We can all echo the words of Professor E. R. Dodds in his own study of Greek religious psychology: 'I shall of course be standing, as we all stand, on the shoulders of Rohde.'-- from the Introduction by W. K. C. Guthrie
