Book Lay Readings of the Bible in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Lay Readings of the Bible in Early Modern Europe written by Erminia Ardissino and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this collection of essays is to bring together new comparative research studies on the place and role of the Bible in early modern Europe. It focuses on lay readings of the Bible, interrogating established historical, social, and confessional paradigms. It highlights the ongoing process of negotiation between the faithful congregation and ecclesiastical institutions, in both Protestant and Catholic countries. It shows how, even in the latter, where biblical translations were eventually forbidden, the laity drew upon the Bible as a source of ethical, cultural, and spiritual inspiration, contributing to the evolution of central aspects of modernity. Interpreting the Bible could indeed be a means of feeding critical perspectives and independent thought and behavior. Book Massekhet Keritot

    Book Details:
  • Author : Federico Dal Bo
  • Publisher : Mohr Siebeck
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9783161526619
  • Pages : 504 pages

Download or read book Massekhet Keritot written by Federico Dal Bo and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2013 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tractate Keritot of the Babylonian Talmud belongs to the Order of Qodashim in the Mishnah. It discusses the Temple and its rituals, especially sacrifices, but deals mostly with laws of incest, sexual transgressions, childbirth, and miscarriages. In this commentary, Federico Dal Bo provides a historical, philological and philosophical investigation on these gender issues. He discusses almost the entire tractate, referring to many other sources, Jewish (the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Sifra, and other rabbinic texts) as well as non-Jewish (Akkadian, Hittite, and Ugaritic). The author also provides accurate philological observations both on the Mishnah and the Gemara. Finally, he addresses gender issues by combining a reductionistic approach to Talmudic study (the so called "Brisker method") with philosophical deconstruction. Dal Bo shows that in nearly the entire tractate Keritot the rabbis discuss human sexuality in a tendentious and restrictive way, claiming that heterosexuality is the only proper sexual contact and progressively stigmatizing any other kind of sexual behavior.

Book Urban Narratives and the Spaces of Rome

Download or read book Urban Narratives and the Spaces of Rome written by Gregory Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book foregrounds the works of Pier Paolo Pasolini to study the Roman periphery and examine the relevance of Pasolini’s vision in the construction of subaltern identity and experience. It analyses the contemporary Italian society to understand the problem of social exclusion of marginal communities. Narrative studies are at the core of the contemporary social science research. This book uses narrative analysis to unpack the deeper meaning of Rome’s stigmatized periphery through an interplay of Italian cinema, literature, and social and political climates. It encourages a positive interpretation of the Roman periphery through its characterization as a homogeneous area of marginality as emphasized in Pasolini’s writings and films on Rome. This re-evaluation left a lasting impact on the modern periphery and the narratives of ordinary citizens as evident in contemporary street art and popular musical production. Pasolini’s revolutionary vision allows us to appreciate the human and aesthetic character of urban life in regions beyond the main urban areas. The respect for subaltern urban communities encouraged by this book can be extended from Rome to other parts of the world. This book presents an interconnection of social theory, geography, poetry, literature, film and the visual arts to study the experience of life in underprivileged urban areas. Written in an accessible style, the book offers a reimagining of the Roman periphery which will appeal to readers in France, Spain, Italy, Australia, areas which have significant interest in Italian studies and the works of Pasolini.
