Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book straddles the fertile middle ground between science and religion at a time when the conversation is dominated by extremists on both sides. Taking seriously the modern view of the universe, including the fossil record for the history of life across millions of years, the author considers our relationship to the rest of nature. In addition, the age-old questions concerning meaning, values, and our place within it all are perhaps more pressing than ever before. This work provides a broad engagement with major ideas, including evolution and earth stewardship, while drawing upon a rich heritage of philosophy and literature and doing so in a manner accessible to the general reader.

Book More Reflections of a Dinosaur Priest

Download or read book More Reflections of a Dinosaur Priest written by Lloyd Csp and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some dinosaurs are landlocked - the best fly. Father James Lloyd takes to the skies as he describes the beauty of the Catholic Church's magnificent traditions and the courage it take to be truly Catholic." - Dr. E. Mark Stern - Psychoanalyst Professor Emeritus of Psychology - Iona College "An honest and provocative book which challenges contemporary political correctness...well worth reading." - Bishop Thomas V.Dailey Retired Bishop of Brooklyn, New York and West Palm Beach, Florida This book is the culmination of a lifetime of experiences. Father James Lloyd has been a New York state licensed psychologist for 30 years with a PhD in psychology from NYU. He likes to say "I am half Russian Jew and half Irish but ALL Catholic. My parents were Vaudevillians and I was a classic 'dirty neck kid' from San Juan Hill in West Side Manhattan." As an adult, Lloyd spent time as a missionary in southern Africa, taught theology, was the rector of a seminary, and hosted an interview show on WNBC for 15 years. On his show, he interviewed a tremendous variety of celebrities, including Bill Buckley Jr., Mother Teresa, David Susskind and Jackie Gleason. He worked with divorced and separated Catholics, with widows and widowers. He preached missions in parishes, gave retreats to clergy, taught psychology on the undergraduate level and was the Director of the Graduate Division of Pastoral Counseling at Iona College for 20 years. Since retirement, he runs a weekly group for the Archdiocese of New York to help males who seek inner chastity in the face of their strong same sex attractions. He has seen miracles of God's grace in all aspects of life. This book presents a series of convictions about life and its meaning through the eyes of what he has seen of life. Each writing articulates his beliefs and a deeply personal view of the world as it stands today.

  • Pages : 186 pages

Download or read book Dynamic 3D Imaging written by Andreas Kolb and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 3D imaging sensors have been investigated for several decades. Recently, - provements on classical approaches such as stereo vision and structured light on the one hand, and novel time-of-?ight (ToF) techniques on the other hand have emerged, leading to 3D vision systems with radically improvedcharacter- tics. Presently, these techniques make full-range 3D data available at interactive frame rates, and thus open the path toward a much broader application of 3D vision systems. The workshop on Dynamic 3D Vision (Dyn3D) was held in conjunction with the annual conference of the German Association of Pattern Recognition (DAGM) in Jena on September 9, 2009. Previous workshops in this series have focused on the same topic, i.e., the Dynamic 3D Vision workshopin conjunction with the DAGM conference in 2007 and the CVPR workshop Time of Flight Camera-Based Computer Vision (TOF-CV) in 2008. The goal of this year’s workshop, as for the prior events, was to constitute a platform for researchers working in the ?eld of real-time range imaging, where all aspects, from sensor evaluation to application scenarios, are addressed. After a very competitive and high-quality reviewing process, 13 papers were accepted for publication in this LNCS issue. The research area on dynamic 3D vision proved to be extremely lively. Again, as for prior workshops on this ?eld, numerous new insights and novel approaches on time-of-?ight sensors, on re- time mono- and multidimensional data processing and on various applications are presented in these workshop proceedings.

  • Release : 2017-11-04
  • ISBN : 9781976543593
  • Pages : 400 pages

Download or read book Dinosaur Memories II written by Allen Debus and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within Dinosaur Memories II's thirty-eight chapters, Allen A. Debus (a name familiar to dinosaur aficionados and daikaiju fans) presents a selection of his many fanzine writings, stemming from the 1980s through recent time. Although a 'sequel' of sorts, it may be read independently of 2002's "Dinosaur Memories: Dino-Trekking for Beasts of Thunder, Fantastic Saurians, Paleo-people, Dinosaurabilia and other Prehistoria." Today, it would be difficult, time-consuming (& rather expensive) to track down the material presented in this new compilation, scattered among many different fanzines. Presenting edited zine' articles, culled from the pages of Prehistoric Times, G-Fan, Scary Monsters and other fanzines, "DM II's" chapters are organized, following a Preface, into eleven major sections covering the bases of pop-cultural paleontology and dino-monsterology: LOST HORIZONS; CHICAGOLAND DINOSAURS; PALEOIMAGERY vs. PALEOART; SCIENCE FICTIONAL DINO-MONSTERS; STATUESQUE DINOSAURS; UNSUNG PALEO-MONSTERS; MYTHIC MONSTROSITIES; PLANET OF APES vs. DINO-MONSTERS, ASTRO-PALEONTOLOGY; BELLICOSE BEHEMOTHS; and PERSONAL PETROGLYPHS. The book melds nostalgic, personalized perspective with science and fiction of our beloved prehistoric monsters! Particular chapters offer further elaboration on topics introduced in the author's "Paleoimagery: The Evolution of Dinosaurs in Art" (2002), "Dinosaurs in Fantastic Fiction" (2006), and "Prehistoric Monsters" (2009). This is Allen's 8th book overall, five of which were previously published by McFarland Publishers. This createspace platform book was edited for publication by Kristen L. Dennis of Full Proof Editing in 2017. Both an Index, and Foreword by kaiju expert Mike Bogue are included.

Book The Second Jurassic Dinosaur Rush

Download or read book The Second Jurassic Dinosaur Rush written by Paul D. Brinkman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The so-called “Bone Wars” of the 1880s, which pitted Edward Drinker Cope against Othniel Charles Marsh in a frenzy of fossil collection and discovery, may have marked the introduction of dinosaurs to the American public, but the second Jurassic dinosaur rush, which took place around the turn of the twentieth century, brought the prehistoric beasts back to life. These later expeditions—which involved new competitors hailing from leading natural history museums in New York, Chicago, and Pittsburgh—yielded specimens that would be reconstructed into the colossal skeletons that thrill visitors today in museum halls across the country. Reconsidering the fossil speculation, the museum displays, and the media frenzy that ushered dinosaurs into the American public consciousness, Paul Brinkman takes us back to the birth of dinomania, the modern obsession with all things Jurassic. Featuring engaging and colorful personalities and motivations both altruistic and ignoble, The Second Jurassic Dinosaur Rush shows that these later expeditions were just as foundational—if not more so—to the establishment of paleontology and the budding collections of museums than the more famous Cope and Marsh treks. With adventure, intrigue, and rivalry, this is science at its most swashbuckling.

Book Kong Godzilla and the Living Earth

Download or read book Kong Godzilla and the Living Earth written by Allen A. Debus and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 2010s, science fiction's immortal adversaries King Kong and Godzilla, representing our conflicts per Carl Sagan's "dream dragons" analogy, made comebacks in American cinema. The blockbuster Kaiju resurged onto the screen, depicting these protectors of an Earth plagued by mankind's hubris and folly. With Earth's future hanging in the balance, their climactic 2021 staging settled a score between the two giant monsters, resolving Toho's classic 1963 film King Kong vs. Godzilla. As formidable creatures emerging from Time's Tomb on Mother Earth, metaphorical Kong and Godzilla are considered here in light of new millennial environmentalism's stark reality. This book, nostalgic in tone, explores the meaning of Kong and Godzilla as planetary saviors--titanic protectors of a theoretical "living Earth" Gaia--defending the globe from a prehistoric plague of adversaries.

Book Double Bind The Muslim Right the Anglo American Left and Universal Human Rights

Download or read book Double Bind The Muslim Right the Anglo American Left and Universal Human Rights written by Meredith Tax and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a period of right wing attacks on Muslims - or people thought to be Muslims - how does one respond to human rights violations by the Muslim Right without feeding hate campaigns? When US diplomats invoke the oppression of Muslim women to sanctify war, how do we practice feminist solidarity without strengthening Orientalism and neocolonialism? When the US targets jihadis for assassination by drone, should human rights defenders worry about violations perpetrated by those same jihadis or focus on violations by the state? These are some of the questions raised in Double Bind: the Muslim Right, the Anglo-American Left, and Universal Human Rights ... Taking the UK organization Cageprisoners as an example, it shows how to distinguish between organizations that stand for universal and inseparable human rights, and those that use the language of human rights for other purposes. It discusses "five wrong ideas about the Muslim Right" : that it is anti-imperialist; that "defence of Muslim lands" is comparable to national liberation struggles; that the problem is "Islamphobia"; that terrorism is justified by revolutionary necessity; and that any feminist who criticises the Muslim Right is an Orientalist ally of US imperialism."--Publisher description.
