Book excerpt: A remote mountain community is suddenly beseiged by a rash of grisly murders encroaching upon it from the surrounding forest. Bizarre reports start to spread, describing attacks from viscious creatures, some human...some not. At the centre of these deaths is a dark, secluded mansion belonging to the mysterious Umbrella Corporation. For years Umbrella has laboured within the mansion, unwatched, ostensibly conducting benign genetic research. Deployed to investigate the strange goings on is the Special Tactics and Rescue Squad (S.T.A.R.S), a paramilitary response unit boasting an unusual array of mission specialists. They believe they are ready for anything but nothing prepares them for the terror which awaits them when they penetrate the mansions long-locked doors. Behind the horror of nightmare creatures, results of forbidden experiments gone disasterously wrong, lies a conspiracy so vast in its scope and so insidious in its agenda that the S.T.A.R.S will be betrayed from within to ensure that the world never learns Umbrella's secret. And if any survive...they may well come to envy those who do not.

Book Waiting for Regina

    Book Details:
  • Author : Curtis W. Jackson

Download or read book Waiting for Regina written by Curtis W. Jackson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-28 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waiting for Regina is a heart-warming, beautiful and disconcertingly reflective book. The novel is composing from a short story written by the same author entitled, Regina, What Is the Color of It? Presenting as a long and eloquent letter from a friend, Mispha, a dark girl from a Haitian-Jamaican black family, writes to her close childhood companion. She is Regina whose "brown sugar" skin is a lighter shade. Both are in their teen years. This book is basing during the heydays of the latter 1980's as one character states, "the age of Bill Cosby." Racism, bullying, interracial marriage, abuse, and loss of life are just a few of the various themes treated and touched upon in this book. Unexpecting expiry is one of the underlying issues of the first time novel citing in the early chapters regarding the bereavements of relatives in both of the girl's families. The publication is well written and gives a nostalgic and almost a warm feeling to it. Moreover, we see and witness the old America which was segregating while under the notion that integration was in practice. While not exploiting those serious themes, this novel may become one of the most entertaining of the year with lively and varied characters, fluid pacing, and unforgettable dialogue. Ali Larsen-Amazon (Five-Star Review) The story touches on many other serious themes, such as depression and evolution versus creation (along with the obvious plot line of being a person of color trying to succeed). These subjects are beautifully woven together as the narrator writes the story to a friend. This is an insightful book that will really make you think about the world we're living in. Although we can say that Regina is our eyes through this story, is Mispha who is in secret the protagonist here. Mispha is Haitian-Jamaican while Regina's skin has a lighter tone, and sometimes that is all that takes for there to be difference, and that's the tragic magic in here. The time where this book is set is on the years where racism was present and was a key factor in society. That is why Mispha got discriminated a lot, because of her color. But that's not the only controversial point this novel was trying to reach, others are Religion and Family as well, some that even these days are not addressed properly. Diego Quintero-Goodreads (Five Star Review) As I mentioned before, the story is highly immersive; the writer does a fantastic job making the reader feel like he is the one living these events, and when you close the book, the words stick with you, something that most books of this same profile fail to accomplish more often that I would like to say. Jeda Maderse-The Booknerd Dragon (Five Star Review) I totally love the story of this book. I love how the situations in it are really, really close to reality. Lewis N. Jackson-Author, Ksana-Kai (Four Star Review) This is a story about race relations, a sensitive topic, which Curtis handles expertly. There is a lot to learn from this book, and it causes one to reflect on the role they play in society towards supporting equitable treatment for people of all races. This is a page turner. Go out and buy it and you will be richly rewarded. Mia Johnson-Goodreads (Five Star Review) Waiting for Regina by Curtis W. Jackson is a wonderful novel that I read recently. It made me enjoy my leisure time and made me think about my past and childhood. This novel is filled with flashbacks and dialogues making it lively, convincing and highly understandable. Mixed with a passion for family the tale flows entertaining the reader. Mispha's letter to the black girl Regina is...mind opening, and I highly enjoyed this. My wish is not to exploit the thrill, curiosity, and anxiety of reading the reading, so I won't detail any further. I recommend this as a must-read for everyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deckard Cain made his way across the floor, following the footprints to an alcove in the far wall. Rotted boards clung to supports, the last remains of an ancient library. This had been a ritual chamber, many centuries before, used to summon things from beyond the human world. A portal to the Burning Hells themselves, perhaps. The shelves were empty now. He saw a speck of yellow underneath a splinter of wood and bent to pick up a corner of parchment paper, curled and speckled with mildew. Something moved in the shadows to his right. He whirled, holding the light up. For a moment it appeared as if the shadows themselves were alive, bunching and swirling like ink in water. At the same time, a voice like the distant moan of wind drifted through the empty room and raised the hairs on the back of his neck. “Deckaaaaarrdddd Caiiinnnn . . .” Cain felt a strange doubling, a memory of a night many years before, when he was just a boy. A whispered voice calling to him, just like this. He backed away, fumbling in his rucksack with one hand, holding the lighted staff with the other against the darkness. Already he was doubting himself: had it just been the wind moving through the broken remains of the building above him, a trick his mind had played after so long in the sun? The voice came again, a sound like bones scraping together in the grave. “Your ghosts are many, old man, and they are active.” A grating of metal over rock seemed to come from everywhere at once. Once again a pool of black smoke thickened and then dissipated, only to reassemble somewhere else: a shape carrying a sword, the form of a man, but with eyes that glowed red with the fires of hell. Cain knew what this was, yanked from the depths of his own mind and used against him: the image of the Dark Wanderer himself, conjured up to weaken his resolve. The smoke-shape swirled and shifted, reforming into two indistinct human shapes, one taller and clearly female, one small and delicate. Shock raced through Cain’s limbs as an older, familiar memory fought to surface. He closed his eyes against the darkness as the yawning pit of despair opened within him, threatening to pull him in. You must not listen. *** Deckard Cain is the last of the Horadrim, the sole surviving member of a mysterious and legendary order. Assembled by the archangel Tyrael, the Horadrim were charged with the sacred duty of seeking out and vanquishing the three Prime Evils: Diablo (the Lord of Terror), Mephisto (the Lord of Hatred), and Baal (the Lord of Destruction). But that was many years ago. As the decades passed, the Horadrim’s strength diminished, and they fell into obscurity. Now all of their collected history, tactics, and wisdom lie within the aged hands of one man. A man who is growing concerned. Dark whisperings have begun to fill the air, tales of ancient evil stirring, rumblings of a demonic invasion set to tear the land apart. Amid the mounting dread, Deckard Cain uncovers startling new information that could bring about the salvation—or ruin—of the mortal world: other remnants of the Horadrim still exist. He must unravel where they have been and why they are hiding from one of their own. As Cain searches for the lost members of his order, he is thrust into an alliance with an unlikely ally: Leah, an eight-year-old girl feared by many to carry a diabolical curse. What is her secret? How is it tied to the prophesied End of Days? And if there are other living Horadrim, will they be able to stand against oblivion? These are the questions Deckard Cain must answer . . . . . . before it is too late.

The magnitude of the quake not only kills hundreds of thousands of people, but has actually caused a large portion of the SoCal area to fall and crumble into the Pacific. What little that remains is hanging on to the mainland by a thread, and a massive island has now appeared 30 miles south of San Clemente Islands, in disputed waters between Mexico and the United States.Ancient creatures now reclaim their territory, rampaging through the newborn island of Los Angeles and acting as harbingers of an even more malevolent force in the Pacific. Martial law is declared and the government immediately begins to lie to its citizens, stating that rescue efforts are underway but keeping a 20 mile buffer area clear between the jagged remnants of coastline and the rest of the country.Government military agencies have been experimenting with time travel and energy at two hidden facilities in Angeles National Forest and Topanga State Park, accidentally triggering the quake and worse, opening a series of rifts between our time and another.Dinosaurs - the original apex predators - are now flooding through these massive rifts as they open and close along the broken coastline. The Angeles National Forest team was wiped out completely, and the Topanga Team's last transmission was from Ground Zero of the quake. Now a crack team of commandos has been sent into the zone to back up an "off the books" asset named REEVES RIDENHOUR - someone unequaled at finding those who can't or don't want to be found. The leader of the wetworks unit, REYKA GRAY, has one job - ensure that Ridenhour performs his. What happens when conflicting desires collide with the need to dominate the natural order? Savage worlds lie exposed. Welcome to the Empire.
