Book Downing Street Diary

Download or read book Downing Street Diary written by Bernard Donoughue and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2005 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in 1974, Bernard Donoughue was invited by Harold Wilson first to help fight the General Election and then to found and run the Policy Unit at Number Ten Downing Street, a body independent of the Civil Service machine working solely for the Prime Minister. He thus joined Wilson’s notorious "kitchen cabinet" with Joe Haines--Wilson’s combative press secretary--and Marcia Williams, Wilson’s personal and private secretary. Donoughue remained in Downing Street throughout Wilson’s final premiership, and his daily diary provides an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Harold Wilson struggling to hold the Labour Party together, drinking heavily, increasingly paranoid about "plots" and the press, and apparently in thrall to Marcia Williams. Williams had an extraordinary hold over the Prime Minister and violently resented "intrusion" from any other advisors, Donoughue included. Though the story of Wilson’s "kitchen cabinet" has been told before, there has never been an account as intimate and explosive as this extraordinary diary. One of the most extraordinary accounts of modern times, this is an intimate and often explosive look at life at the heart of Harold Wilson's government.

Book Journals 1939 1977

Download or read book Journals 1939 1977 written by Keith Vaughan and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing like Keith Vaughan's Journals. They represent one of the greatest pieces of confessional writing of the twentieth-century. Keith Vaughan was a painter and belonged to the Neo-Romantic group, other members including Graham Sutherland, John Minton, Michael Ayrton, Ceri Richards, John Piper and John Craxton. He was also gay and much troubled by his sexuality. 'Faced at the age of 27 with what then seemed the likelihood of imminent extinction before I had properly got started', he began the Journals in 1939 and only finished them at the very moment of his suicide in 1977. The Journals are edited by Alan Ross, and in his words they are 'a self-portrait of astonishing honesty: devoid of disguise in any shape or form, or hypocrisy. It is difficult to think of anything in literature they resemble.' The earlier Journals, covering his war and his period of greatest creativity in the late 1940s and 1950s, 'are revealing for the light they shed on a painter's character and, to a lesser extent, working methods.' The last Journals chronicle 'a descent into hell . . . redeemed by their frankness, spleen and dry humour.' First published in 1966 and then reissued in amplified form in 1989, it is the latter version Faber Finds is reissuing. The fuller edition itself has been out of print for a long time, so its renewed availability will be welcome.

Book The Backroom Boys

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graeme Sligo
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2013-10-05
  • ISBN : 1922132543
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book The Backroom Boys written by Graeme Sligo and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Backroom Boys is the remarkable, but little known, story of how a varied group of talented intellectuals, drafted into the Australian Army in the dark days of 1942, provided high-level policy advice to Australia’s most senior soldier, General Blamey, and through him to the Government for the remainder of the war and beyond. This band of academics, lawyers and New Guinea patrol officers formed a unique military unit, the Directorate of Research and Civil Affairs, under the command of an eccentric and masterful string-puller, Alf Conlon. The Directorate has been depicted as a haven for underemployed poets or meddlesome soldier-politicians. Based on wide-ranging research, this book reveals a fuller and more fascinating picture. The fierce conflicts in the wartime bureaucracy between public servants and soldiers, in which the Directorate provided critical support to Blamey, went to the heart of military command, accountability and the profession of arms. The Directorate was a pioneer in developing approaches to military government in areas liberated by the combat troops, as demonstrated by the Australian Army in New Guinea, and Borneo in 1945-46. It is an issue of enduring importance. The Directorate established the Australian School of Pacific Administration, and had an important role in founding the Australian National University. Its influence extended into post war Australia. The Backroom Boys emphasises the personality of Colonel Alf Conlon, as well as the talented men and women he recruited. Above all, this book shows how, unexpectedly, the Australian Army fostered a group of men and women who made a lasting contribution to the development of Australia in the decades after the war.
