Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calls upon Luke 7:36-50 as a starting point for studying the Pharisees from a perspective that aims to "redeem" them from anti-Semitic readings of the New Testament and establishes Jesus as a first-century Jew. Also, by comparing Luke and Mark, by posing questions and at times resolving them, the book demonstrates how Luke's themes, particularly those regarding the poor and marginalized, shape his conflation of Mark's story of Simon the Leper with other Lukan traditions.

Book excerpt: Meals have always been important across societies and cultures, a time for friends and families to come together. An important part of relationships, meals are vital to our social health. Author Tim Chester sums it up: "Food connects." Chester argues that meals are also deeply theological—an important part of Christian fellowship and mission. He observes that the book of Luke is full of stories of Jesus at meals. These accounts lay out biblical principles. Chester notes, "The meals of Jesus represent something bigger." Six chapters in A Meal with Jesus show how they enact grace, community, hope, mission, salvation, and promise. Moving from biblical times to the modern world, Chester applies biblical truth to challenge our contemporary understandings of hospitality. He urges sacrificial giving and loving around the table, helping readers consider how meals can be about serving others and sharing the grace of Christ.

Book Jesus Meals with Pharisees and Their Liturgical Roots

Download or read book Jesus Meals with Pharisees and Their Liturgical Roots written by Thomas Esposito and published by Pontificio Istituto Biblico. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke's presentation of the deeds and words of Jesus features an emphasis on Jesus at table unique among the Synoptic Gospels. Luke alone portrays Jesus dining in the house of a Pharisee, and he does this on three separate occasions (7:36-50; 11:37-54; 14:1-24). An analysis of these three scenes and their surrounding narrative contexts reveals that Luke presents Jesus' historical practice of commensality as a model for Christian believers struggling to implement that teaching in their own communities. Jesus exhorts his disciples to avoid the trap of the Pharisaic mindset, which leads to the exclusion of others (and even auto-exclusion) from the communal meal. Excessive scholarly recourse to the Hellenistic symposium genre to interpret these meals ignores the fact that the meal itself is the message for both Jews and Gentiles. The book concludes with a suggestion that the Synoptic manner of portraying Jesus coming, going, and encountering people in need of healing or salvation has its origin in the liturgical life of the early Christian communities. This Gospel pericopal structure or genre of encounter allows Luke to present meal scenes to the believers gathered to encounter Jesus in the breaking of bread around their shared table (Lk 7:37; 24:31), just as the characters in the written Gospels do.

Book The Christian and the Pharisee

Download or read book The Christian and the Pharisee written by Dr. R. T. Kendall and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reproduces a candid exchange of letters between two leading religious figures ' an evangelical preacher and a senior Jewish rabbi. This groundbreaking publication is a rare opportunity to read the heartfelt correspondence of two prolific and acclaimed theologians, as they both seek to vigorously defend their own beliefs and allow themselves to be challenged by the claims of the other. As the discussion continues we see mutual respect grow and a strong friendship forged before the relationship is inevitably tested as they encounter points of seemingly irreconcilable differences. Though there are issues and beliefs which separate the two theological camps, this book shows how they share enough to not only get along, but form strong alliances.

Book Confessions of a Food Catholic

Download or read book Confessions of a Food Catholic written by Douglas Wilson and published by Canon Press & Book Service. This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can sin with food in many ways -- by not sharing it, by eating way too much of it, by throwing it across the restaurant table... But you do not sin with food by bowing your head over it, saying grace with true gratitude in your heart, and tucking in. Sharp-edged but humorous, Confessions of a Food Catholic addresses the unscriptural approach to food that many Christians have developed in recent years. (By the way, a "food catholic" is somebody who accepts all eaters of all foods, even if he or she doesn't actually eat quinoa.) Specifically, the book addresses divisive threats to Christian table fellowship, the know-it-all pride of newfangled "health food" rules, and the dislocated moralism that makes "organic" and "natural" the signs of righteousness while disdaining the brethren who buy their beef at Stuffmart.

Book Contagious Holiness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Craig Blomberg
  • Publisher : New Studies in Biblical Theology
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Contagious Holiness written by Craig Blomberg and published by New Studies in Biblical Theology. This book was released on 2005 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of humanity's most basic and common practices--eating meals--was transformed by Jesus into an occasion of divine encounter. In sharing food and drink with his companions, he invited them to share in the grace of God. He revealed his redemptive mission while eating with sinners, repentant and unrepentant alike. Jesus' "table fellowship" with sinners in the Gospels has been widely agreed to be historically reliable. However, this consensus has recently been challenged, for example, by the claim that the meals in which Jesus participated took the form of Greco-Roman symposia--or that the "sinners" involved were the most flagrantly wicked within Israel's society, not merely the ritually impure or those who did not satisfy strict Pharisaic standards of holiness. In this study, Craig L. Blomberg engages with the debate and opens up the significance of the topic. He surveys meals in the Old Testament and the intertestamental period, examines all the Gospel texts relevant to Jesus' eating with sinners, and concludes with contemporary applications.

Each session examines set bible passage(s), frequently considering them through the lens of the stories and teachings which bookend the meal. The sessions also prioritise posing questions to support Christians in reflecting upon their own lives and how they can further incorporate Jesus’ teachings into them. This guide brings into one user-friendly volume a range of ideas that these meals explore, including God’s grace, what real purity means, how Jesus equips us to further his Kingdom, the purpose of Jesus’ miracles and the nature of Jesus’ Messiahship, as well as current interpretations of these occasions of commensality and the relevance of their historical and social context, in a language that is easy to understand

Book The Fourfold Gospel

Download or read book The Fourfold Gospel written by J. W. McGarvey and published by Deward Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic Harmony of the Gospels by J. W. McGarvey and Philip Y. Pendleton with interspersed comments. Attractively re-typeset, this enduring work is a valuable resource to modern Bible students. "In most commentaries a fifth or sixth of the space is taken up in drawing distinctions between the texts of the four Gospels, while in this work these distinctions are placed before the reader's eye, where he can see them for himself at a glance. Moreover, in other commentaries, which give the text, another sixth or seventh of the work is taken up in reprinting in the notes that portion of the text concerning which the commentator wishes to speak. Our interjected method avoids all this needless repetition, and makes it possible for us to present the comment with the least preliminary verbiage or introductory setting. Time is also saved because the reader does not have to look back and forth from the text at the top to the comment at the bottom of the page. Again, other commentaries lose a large amount of space by using the King James text. Those which preceded the revision waste space correcting the translation and modernizing its English: those published since the revision suffer a similar waste by drawing endless comparisons between the two texts. By choosing the American revision as the basis for our work, we have a text which needs but little explanation or apology, and we are thereby enabled to employ the reader's time and strength to his best advantage." --Excerpted from the Introduction

Book The Woman with the Alabaster Jar

Download or read book The Woman with the Alabaster Jar written by Margaret Starbird and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1993-06-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Starbird’s theological beliefs were profoundly shaken when she read Holy Blood, Holy Grail, a book that dared to suggest that Jesus Christ was married to Mary Magdalen and that their descendants carried on his holy bloodline in Western Europe. Shocked by such heresy, this Roman Catholic scholar set out to refute it, but instead found new and compelling evidence for the existence of the bride of Jesus--the same enigmatic woman who anointed him with precious unguent from her “alabaster jar.” In this provocative book, Starbird draws her conclusions from an extensive study of history, heraldry, symbolism, medieval art, mythology, psychology, and the Bible itself. The Woman with the Alabaster Jar is a quest for the forgotten feminine--in the hope that its return will help restore a healthy balance to planet Earth.

Book The Portrayals of the Pharisees in the Gospels and Acts

Download or read book The Portrayals of the Pharisees in the Gospels and Acts written by Mary Marshall and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first five books of the New Testament contain a large proportion of all uses of the term Farisai/oj in extant literature. In the light of growing scepticism among historians of Judaism over the accuracy and legitimacy of reconstructions of the Pharisees of history, Mary Marshall sets aside the quest for the historical Pharisees and instead offers an analysis of the portrayal of the Pharisees by each evangelist. The author adopts a redaction critical approach which incorporates narrative critical observations where appropriate. Her examination of the texts demonstrates the particularity of each book and its portrayal of the Pharisees. The five books do not portray a monolithic body of evidence but each has its own style, occasion and purpose(s). All New Testament portrayals of the Pharisees occupy a good deal of common ground and yet the pictures they produce are not identical. Every one of the evangelists integrates the Pharisees into his own presentation of the gospel, emphasisingthose aspects of the Pharisees' portrayal which serve his own particular concerns. This study of material from the gospels and Acts yields multi-faceted portraits of the Pharisees and discloses the variety of christological, soteriological, ecclesiological and ethical concerns with which they are associated. It alerts the exegete both to the nuances within a given New Testament book and to the subtle differences between books. It demonstrates the combination of fidelity and freedom with which the evangelists regarded their inherited tradition and sources. The way the Pharisees are portrayed in each text is particular to that text and its purposes, and therefore consideration of the Pharisees' portrayal is able to enrich our understanding of the gospels and Acts more generally.
