Book excerpt: Dining With Dragons is the fascinating and humourous story of leading Asian food writer and chef, Carol Selva Rajah, and her journey from war-torn Malaysia to culinary success, both in Australia and the globe. The book carries forward the story of a family in transition from the late 19th Century, spanning three generations and their lives as it is lived in Srilanka, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, the US and finally Australia. Stories unfold across a mix of cultures, religions and continents, driven by the characters, their food, and the eating and cooking of it. The book focuses on women, the dragons who surrounded Carol, their lives in Asia through one hundred and twenty years of war, turmoil and independence and their transition to the west in the dying light of colonialism in Asia. The Japanese invade Malaya plunging the country into four long, lean years as Malayans are brought to their knees with fear, hunger and illness, then forced into a war with Mao-inspired Communists who want the British out. Carol goes to university in Singapore, travels to Canada and the United States, and finally to Australia, when Malaysian Independence brings a new set of rules to Malaya. Food becomes Carol's career in Sydney where she settles with her children and her husband and ultimately goes on to become a culinary success... Each chapter of the book ends with a recipe or a menu pertinent to the chapter. All are original recipes, one in the hand-writing of her orphaned mother Sara, who vowed never to enter a kitchen again, and another in the handwriting of her Auntie Siok. This is a book that inspires one that with trust, nothing is impossible.

Book A Landscape with Dragons

Download or read book A Landscape with Dragons written by Michael D. O'Brien and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2011-05-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harry Potter series of books and movies are wildly popular. Many Christians see the books as largely if not entirely harmless. Others regard them as dangerous and misleading. In his book A Landscape with Dragons, Harry Potter critic Michael O'Brien examines contemporary children's literature and finds it spiritually and morally wanting. His analysis, written before the rise of the popular Potter books and films, anticipates many of the problems Harry Potter critics point to. A Landscape with Dragons is a controversial, yet thoughtful study of what millions of young people are reading and the possible impact such reading may have on them. In this study of the pagan invasion of children's culture, O'Brien, the father of six, describes his own coming to terms with the effect it has had on his family and on most families in Western society. His analysis of the degeneration of books, films, and videos for the young is incisive and detailed. Yet his approach is not simply critical, for he suggests a number of remedies, including several tools of discernment for parents and teachers in assessing the moral content and spiritual impact of this insidious revolution. In doing so, he points the way to rediscovery of time-tested sources, and to new developments in Christian culture. If you have ever wondered why a certain children's book or film made you feel uneasy, but you couldn't figure out why, this book is just what you need. This completely revised, much expanded second edition also includes a very substantial recommended reading list of over 1,000 books for kindergarten through highschool.

Only half are old enough to mate, but over five years they created a covey of nearly two hundred dragons. That was enough to have a dozen squadron leaders. The war at Thanos is over, thank all the Gods, but the war at Wylche is heating up. Dragons, taller than a horse, with sharp teeth and breathing fire, are used to scare the southern army men into running. But skirmishes happen; men are killed, injured, and laid up for a time. There is a prophecy come down from the Seven Gods that Zandrax will do something drastic to cause the Wylche Royal Castle to crumble, raise a mountain, and the Gods will use it to create a new Royal Castle atop the mountain for the new Dragon Lord. Prince Leander fears his father will die and that new Dragon Lord will be him. How will Zandrax pull down a castle the Seven Gods installed eons ago? Close to the end of the war King Philipi disappeared. Where? Royal Castle? Will Zandrax appear there? Can Philipi shoot him full of his tiny poison darts from his mini crossbow? Will he have the strength? And what will Zandrax do next? And will his flying horse (Grogan, the shape-changing demon) carry him? Deliver him safely? Or dump him? Will Zandrax be able to carry out his evil diabolical plot?

Book The Book of Dragons

Download or read book The Book of Dragons written by Edith Nesbit and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Dragons (1899) is a collection of children’s stories by English writer Edith Nesbit. Comprising eight stories originally published in 1899 in The Strand Magazine, The Book of Dragons is a work that explores the magic and wonder of mythical beasts for children and adults alike. In “The Book of Beasts,” a young prince named Lionel is named the next king. After his coronation, he goes to the palace library for the first time, where he discovers the eccentric former king’s collection of rare and magical books. Although the Chancellor tries to discourage Lionel from opening them, he picks out a large book titled “The Book of Beasts,” which, when opened, releases a colorful butterfly into the air. Flipping through the book, Lionel turns to a page where a red dragon sits under a palm tree. Terrified, he slams the book shut, but his curiosity proves hard to resist. “Uncle James, or the Purple Stranger” is the story of the Princess of Rotundia, a strange island nation where animals grow to the opposite size as their counterparts around the world. In Rotundia, rabbits and mice grow to the size of elephants, while elephants stop growing when they reach the size of a small dog. One day, the Princess’s friends ask her to show them the royal dragon, but when the ugly creature eats the Princess’s rabbit, her scheming Uncle James hatches a plan to steal the kingdom for himself. These are only two of the eight stories that make up Edith Nesbit’s The Book of Dragons, a bizarre and wonderful collection of tales from one of England’s finest fabulists. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Edith Nesbit’s The Book of Dragons is a classic of English children’s literature reimagined for modern readers.
