Book False Tsars

Download or read book False Tsars written by Gyula Szvák and published by East European Monographs. This book was released on 2000 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering all pretenders to the Russian throne from the Times of Troubles to the end of the nineteenth century, this book stops just short of the false Alekseis and false Anastasias of our time. Explaining why some of the pretenders attracted wide social support, which others lacked, the author examines the role of self-fashioning and impersonation in Russian culture. Szvák focuses on three principal "waves" of pretenders: the false Dimitris (all claiming to be Ivan the Terrible's son Dimitri who died in childhood), the false Peters (following the death of Catherine the Great's husband in the palace coup of 1762), and the false Constantines of the nineteenth century (trying to assume the identity of Nicholas I's older brother Constantine).

Download or read book A Course in Russian History written by V.O. Kliuchevskii and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work by the great 19th-century historian is available once again in an acclaimed 1968 translation that conveys the beauty of Kliuchevsky's language and the power of his ideas. In this volume, Kliuchevsky untangles the confused events of the Time of Troubles and the emergence of the Romanov dynasty, and develops his interpretation of the century as prologue to the Petrine reforms. He dramatically underlines the cultural divide between old Russia and the emergent autocracy and the strangely ambivalent relationship between Russia and the West.

Book excerpt: Little is known regarding prisons located inside Russian Orthodox Monasteries for the incarceration of religious dissenters and sectarians, political activists and criminals. This book focuses on the history of such a prison system and the lives and convictions of the inmates subject to incarceration by Imperial Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The period covered begins 1441, with the arrival of Isidore, the metropolitan of Moscow, to the Moscow Chudov (Miracles) Monastery for incarceration, and ends 1905, when the final inmates were released from the Suzdal Spasso-Evfimiev Monastery, coincident with the edict of religious toleration of Tsar Nicholas II. Likewise included are the women incarcerated in convents over the same period. This is a part of history that is unknown to the non-Russian speaking world and which the author hopes to unveil. With 11 photographs.

Book The Master and Margarita Annotations per chapter

Download or read book The Master and Margarita Annotations per chapter written by Jan Vanhellemont and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-12-20 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita is, among other things, a satire. The author criticises real people in the Soviet Union of the 30s and creates absurd situations by mixing reality and fiction. That mix is hidden everywhere throughout the novel in small details which, at first sight, seem to be trivial, but which are significant for those who know why they are mentioned. In this book you can find annotations, ordered by chapter, explaining the names, locations, situations, quotations and other elements which Mikhail Bulgakov used to illustrate his view of Soviet society, with the aim of better understanding the novel. The terms are mentioned in the order of their first appearance in the novel. On various places in this book you will find Quick Reference (QR) codes which you can scan to gain immediate access to more detailed information on the Master and Margarita website.

Download or read book Quantum Criminals written by Alex Pappademas and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Steely Dan was a somewhat unusual band that still inspires unusually strong devotion in its fans. Formed in the late '60s in New York, they released seven albums between 1971 and 1981, two of which were nominated for a Grammy. Part of what's unusual about them is that each of those albums was made by a different group of musicians--founding members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen had no issues swapping players from record to record in order to get the sound they wanted. The band stopped touring in 1974, so the recording studio was the only place they needed their collaborators. Those recordings are legendary, especially among vinyl enthusiasts, for their exquisite production. The precision was necessary, in part, because Steely Dan played with form more than most bands, mixing elements of other genres--especially jazz--with pop and rock. And the lyrics are also distinctive. As the authors put it in their proposal, Steely Dan's songs are "exercises in fictional world-building. Each song features its own cast of rogues and heroes and creeps and schmucks, lovers and dreamers and cold-blooded operators, all tempest-tossed by the ill winds of the '70s." This book consists of sixty-some essays, each devoted to one character, and each essay is accompanied by a painting of the particular character that serves as a jumping-off point for the piece, with additional spot illustrations scattered throughout"--

Book The Art of Renaissance Warfare

Download or read book The Art of Renaissance Warfare written by Stephen Turnbull and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of the evolution of military technology among knights in Renaissance Europe from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth century. The Art of Renaissance Warfare tells the story of the knight during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries—from the great victories of Edward III and the Black Prince to the fall of Richard III on Bosworth Field. During this period, new technology on the battlefield posed deadly challenges for the mounted warrior; but they also stimulated change, and the knight moved with the times. Having survived the longbow devastation at Crécy, Poitiers and Agincourt, he emerged triumphant, his armor lighter and more effective, and his military skills indispensable. This was the great age of the orders of chivalry and the freemasonry of arms that bound together comrades and adversaries in a tight international military caste. Men such as Bertrand du Guesclin and Sir John Chandos loom large in the pages of this book—bold leaders and brave warriors, imbued with these traditions of chivalry and knighthood. How their heroic endeavors and the knightly code of conduct could be reconciled with the indiscriminate carnage of the “chevauchee” and the depredations of the “free companies” is one of the principal themes of this informative and entertaining book.
