Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume inscribes itself in the long-standing debate on the status of the “word”. Considering its multi-faceted nature, the authors formulate multiple questions about it and, though no answer to these questions might be exhaustive, each of them brings the reader closer to a more complete understanding of the issue. The eleven authors included here address the nature of the word from a number of perspectives, such as the duality of the word, the status of the word as a meaningful unit, the meaning extension, the lexico-grammar continuum, and the pragmatic functioning of the word, to name but a few. Each of the chapters is a fresh contribution that broadens the perspective traditionally adopted in a discussion of the word and, at the same time, constitutes a sound overview of the issues and approaches taken in such an analysis at the turn of the second to the third millennium. The volume is a prime example of the efficiency of research within which multiple linguistic perspectives focus on a single problem – all the perspectives contribute to a more thorough comprehension of the problem than any single of them is ever able to afford.

Download or read book Word Become Flesh Dimensions of Christology written by Brian McDermott and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a text for a basic Christology course this work orients the student of theology by tracing the principal developments in the New Testament and in later Church tradition, giving attention to some of the principal concerns of contemporary culture and the way some of the present-day forms of Christology try to respond to those concerns. It therefore offers a range of contemporary Christological proposals rather than one to the exclusion of others. It also seeks to reunite study of Christ's person" with his "work" through greater attention to soteriology than often happens in traditional Christology. "

Book Aggregating Dialectology Typology and Register Analysis

Download or read book Aggregating Dialectology Typology and Register Analysis written by Benedikt Szmrecsanyi and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to overcome sub-disciplinary boundaries in the study of linguistic variation - be it language-internal or cross-linguistic. Even though dialectologists, register analysts, typologists, and quantitative linguists all deal with linguistic variation, there is astonishingly little interaction across these fields. But the fourteen contributions in this volume show that these subdisciplines actually share many interests and methodological concerns in common. The chapters specifically converge in the following ways: First, they all seek to explore linguistic variation, within or across languages. Second, they are based on usage data, that is, on corpora of (more or less) authentic text or speech of different languages or language varieties. Third, all chapters are concerned with the joint analysis (also sometimes known as “aggregation” or “data synthesis”) of multiple phenomena, features, or measurements of some sort. And lastly, the contributors all marshal quantitative analysis techniques to analyse the data. In short, the volume explores the text-feature-aggregation pipeline in variation studies, demonstrating that there is much mutual inspiration to be had by thinking outside the disciplinary box.
