Book Language Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Language Teaching and Learning written by Debbita Tan Ai Lin and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-19 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every discussion on the role that language plays in our lives, every orator – from prominent politicians and corporate figures to linguists, educational experts, and others – concedes that language is important in all spheres of life. Language is both personal and introspective, as well as public and communal. Without it, we would not be able to communicate and articulate our thoughts and feelings to ourselves, to those in our inner circles, and to those in the world at large. Without it, we would not be able to establish partnerships and collaborations, and to unite peoples of diverse backgrounds and intrinsic values. Without it, too, we would not be able to learn new discoveries and gain new knowledge. The nurturing of a language learning culture is of the utmost importance to ensure that language teaching and learning supports the development of individuals, societies, nations, and populations. Language researchers, educators, and practitioners need to ensure that their learners are empowered to remain relevant. They need to produce critical and analytical thinkers, and successful language users in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The collection of chapters in this volume addresses language teaching and learning dilemmas and draws attention to the challenges researchers have overcome and those they continue to face. The book chapters here reflect the transcendence by language teaching and learning of ordinary boundaries, especially with the advent of the digital revolution, and provide new perspectives, pedagogies, and approaches that help shape ethical, responsible, and sustainable policies. Readers of this volume, whether language practitioners, students, researchers, policy- and decision-makers, concerned educationists, or any interested individual, will gain new insights and experiences as they explore new identities, new instructional media for interactive teaching and learning and new modes of meaning in diverse local and global contexts.

Book The language dimension in all subjects

Download or read book The language dimension in all subjects written by Jean-Claude Beacco and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering the language of schooling is essential for learners to develop the skills necessary for school success and for critical thinking. It is fundamental for participation in democratic societies, and for social inclusion and cohesion. This handbook is a policy and working document which promotes convergence and coherence between the linguistic dimensions of various school subjects. It proposes measures to make explicit – in curricula, pedagogic material and teacher training – the specific linguistic norms and competences which learners must master in each school subject. It also presents the learning modalities that should allow all learners, and in particular the most vulnerable among them, to benefit from diversified language-learning situations in order to develop their cognitive and linguistic capacities.

Book Discourse Conversation and Argumentation Theoretical Perspectives and Innovative Empirical Studies volume III

This book was released on 2024-10-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic is the third volume of Research Topic "Discourse, Conversation and Argumentation: Theoretical Perspectives and Innovative Empirical Studies". Please, see the second volume here. Also, please see the first volume here. As members of a social world within which interaction needs and communicative tools are intertwined in a series of situated relationships, interactions between individuals, but also between groups and between institutions, emerges from the beginning of life. Thinking about how we participate in an interaction, through verbal and non-verbal exchanges, allows us to focus on explicit and implicit norms, on personal and collective preferences, on subjective and interpersonal theories, and on social processes of construction of meaning that characterize the communicative interactions. Although discursive, conversational, and argumentative interactions play an essential role in our lives, there is no integrated area of psychological research on these types of communicative interactions. A wide variety of works is available concerning the focus on the different roles played by social actors within the interactions (symmetric-asymmetric, protagonist-antagonist, teacher-learner), as well as the interest for the constitutive aspects of the interactions (emotional, motivational, cognitive) or developmental factors (skills, competences, knowledge). However, research on discourse, conversation, and argumentation is conducted in a number of separate research communities that are spread across disciplines and have only limited intertwinement. We believe as necessary to create a space for open dialogue within the community of researchers interested in discourse, conversation, and argumentation from a psychological perspective.
