Book Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Three phase Fluidized Beds

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Characteristics of Three phase Fluidized Beds written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrodynamics of three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) fluidized beds has been studied in two columns of 7.62 and 15.2 cm in dia. The minimum gas and liquid velocities necessary to fluidize a bed were determined as a function of the particle size and density and the liquid viscosity; no effect of the initial bed height or column diameter was found. An electroconductivity technique was used to measure local concentrations of solid, liquid, and gas in the fluidized bed; these profiles were fitted using the error function. Overall solid holdup data were combined with over 1350 points from the literature to yield a dimensional correlation involving the physical parameters of the systems studied.

Book Hydrodynamics of Three phase Fluidized Beds

Download or read book Hydrodynamics of Three phase Fluidized Beds written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrodynamics of three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) fluidized beds has been studied in two columns with inside diameters of 7.62 and 15.2 cm respectively. The minimum gas and liquid velocities necessary to fluidize various types of solids were determined and correlated as a function of the particle size and density and the liquid viscosity; no effect of the initial bed height or column diameter was found. Overall phase holdups, or volume fractions, determined from a homogeneous bed model were combined with similar literature data to yield correlations for the overall gas and solid phase holdups. The overall gas holdup increased as the gas velocity was increased, while the overall solid holdup was decreased by increased liquid velocity and was increased by increased particle diameter or solid/liquid density difference. An electroconductivity technique was developed for use in the three-phase fluidized beds which allowed each of the phase holdups to be determined at any point in the column. The technique has shown the existence of a transition region as the bed goes from a three-phase to a two-phase system. The holdup profiles were fitted using the error function, and the mean and standard deviation of the solid holdup profile, along with the gas and solid holdups in the regions where they were constant, were measured for each set of run conditions. Use of these five parameters, which were correlated with the physical pxrameters of the systems studied, permits each of the three phase holdup profiles to be predicted. This gives the reactor designer more information concerning phase distributions than was available previously; thus it will aid in the design of reactors where local conditions throughout the bed must be considered.

Book Hydrodynamic Study of Three Phase Fluidized Beds

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Study of Three Phase Fluidized Beds written by Ravindra Gaikwad and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general purpose of the experimental investigations described here has to study the hydrodynamic properties of gas-liquid fluidized beds. Gas -liquid fluidization of or three-phase fluidization is a chemical engineering operation where all the three phases are brought into contact with each other. This contact is brought about by passing the gas and liquid trough the bed of solids. The solids are said to be in a fluidized state when they are suspended in the continuous phase.Hydrodynamic properties such as gas hold-up, liquid hold-up and bed porosity have been studied. These properties depend upon certain independent variables such as gas flow rates, liquid flow rate, particle size, static bed heights, gas density, liquid density, solid density, liquid surface tension, liquid viscosity, gas viscosity and particle shape. During the course of this experimental investigation only four of these parameters have been varied, viz, gas flow rates, liquid flow rates, static bed height and particle size. The result of these experimental investigations is discussed and correlations have also been developed for the hydrodynamics properties studied.

Book Three dimensional Hydrodynamic and Erosion Modeling of Fluidized Beds Using Kinetic Theory

Download or read book Three dimensional Hydrodynamic and Erosion Modeling of Fluidized Beds Using Kinetic Theory written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three-dimensional hydrodynamic models for gas-solids flow are developed and used to compute bubble and solids motion in rectangular fluidized beds. Our computed results demonstrate the significance and necessity for three-dimensional models of hydrodynamics and erosion in fluidized-bed combustors. A kinetic theory model for erosion using Finnie's single-particle ductile erosion model was used to compute erosion in a rectangular fluidized bed containing a single tube. Comparison of two-dimensional and three-dimensional computed hydrodynamics, erosion rates, and patterns clearly show the superiority of three-dimensional modeling.

Book Modeling of Processes and Reactors for Upgrading of Heavy Petroleum

Download or read book Modeling of Processes and Reactors for Upgrading of Heavy Petroleum written by Jorge Ancheyta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worldwide petroleum industry is facing a dilemma: the production level of heavy petroleum is higher than that of light petroleum. Heavy crude oils possess high amounts of impurities (sulfur, nitrogen, metals, and asphaltenes), as well as a high yield of residue with consequent low production of valuable distillates (gasoline and diesel). These characteristics, in turn, are responsible for the low price of heavy petroleum. Additionally, existing refineries are designed to process light crude oil, and heavy oil cannot be refined to 100 percent. One solution to this problem is the installation of plants for heavy oil upgrading before sending this raw material to a refinery. Modeling of Processes and Reactors for Upgrading of Heavy Petroleum gives an up-to-date treatment of modeling of reactors employed in the main processes for heavy petroleum upgrading. The book includes fundamental aspects such as thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, chemistry, and process variables. Process schemes for each process are discussed in detail. The author thoroughly describes the development of correlations, reactor models, and kinetic models with the aid of experimental data collected from different reaction scales. The validation of modeling results is performed by comparison with experimental and commercial data taken from the literature or generated in various laboratory scale reactors. Organized into three sections, this book deals with general aspects of properties and upgrading of heavy oils, describes the modeling of non-catalytic processes, as well as the modeling of catalytic processes. Each chapter provides detailed experimental data, explanations of how to determine model parameters, and comparisons with reactor model predictions for different situations, so that readers can adapt their own computer programs. The book includes rigorous treatment of the different topics as well as the step-by-step description of model formulation and application. It is not only an indispensable reference for professionals working in the development of reactor models for the petroleum industry, but also a textbook for full courses in chemical reaction engineering. The author would like to express his sincere appreciation to the Marcos Moshinsky Foundation for the financial support provided by means of a Cátedra de Investigación.
