Book Post colonial struggles for a democratic Southern Africa

Download or read book Post colonial struggles for a democratic Southern Africa written by Carolyn Bassett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National liberation, one of the grand narratives of the twentieth century, has left a weighty legacy of unfulfilled dreams. This book explores the ongoing struggle for legitimate, accountable political leaders in postcolonial Southern Africa, focussing on dilemmas arising when ex-liberation movements form the governments. While the spread of multi-party democracy to most countries in the region is to be celebrated, democratic practice often has been superficial - a limited, elitist politics that relies on the symbols of the liberation struggle to legitimate de facto one-party rule and authoritarian practices. Using country cases from Tanzania, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia, the collection explores three subthemes relevant to postcolonial governance in Southern Africa: how the struggle for liberation shapes the character of political transformation, the nature of rule in one-party dominant states headed by former liberation movements, and the processes of governance and resistance in post-liberation contexts. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Contemporary African Studies.

Book Eastern and Southern Africa

Download or read book Eastern and Southern Africa written by Debby Potts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and comprehensive introduction to contemporary development issues in East and Southern Africa, and represents a significant departure from the often descriptive approach adopted by existing regional and development texts on African regions. Each contribution is carefully chosen to highlight the theoretical basis to development issues, and the practical problems of implementing development plans, in this vital subregion. Overall this produces comprehensive and balanced coverage of historical, economic, political and social issues. The twin issues of globalisation and modernisation give the book a clear focus.

Book Southern Africa in World Politics

Download or read book Southern Africa in World Politics written by Janice Love and published by . This book was released on 2005-02-11 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, politics often seem to be local and global simultaneously, challenging people, politicians, and scholars to sort out what is domestic from what is international and how the two are related. Janice Love demonstrates the complex realities of how local and global politics are intimately interwoven, sometimes inextricably so, specifically in southern Africa. In southern Africa, like many other regions, such linkages have existed for decades, if not centuries. Yet the current era is different from previous times when human communities found themselves closely intertwined. Love examines military, political, and economic changes in recent decades. Students of international relations, comparative politics, and African studies will find the region's experience instructive in understanding larger trends in the world. Students particularly interested in Africa will gain insight not only about this region, but also its significance for the whole continent. Deliberately crosses the boundaries of domestic politics and foreign policy as well as comparative politics and international relations. By taking a globalization approach, connecting the local, regional and global, the book offers fresh insights into the dynamics of war and peace, wealth and poverty as well as local to global governance in southern Africa. Examines globalization in three arenas or domains (military, political, and economic), not only distinguishing them from each other, but also probing what has changed and what has remained the same across time.

Book Region Building in Southern Africa

Download or read book Region Building in Southern Africa written by Chris Saunders and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How successful have Southern African states been in dealing with the major issues that have faced the region in recent years? What could be done to produce more cohesive and effective region-building in Southern Africa? In this original and wide-ranging volume, which draws on an interdisciplinary team of mainly African and African-based specialists, the key political, socio-economic, and security challenges facing Southern Africa today are addressed. These include the various issues confronting the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and its institutions; such as HIV/AIDS, migration and xenophobia, land-grabbing and climate change; and the role of the main external actors involved with the region, including the United Nations, the European Union, the United States, and China. The book also looks at the Southern African Customs Union and Southern African Development Finance Institutions, including the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Industrial Development Corporation, and issues of gender and peacebuilding. In doing so, the book goes to the heart of analyzing the effectiveness of SADC and other regional organisation, suggesting how region-building in Southern Africa may be compared with similar attempts elsewhere in Africa and other parts of the world.
