Each annual volume lists approximately 2,000 monographs and articles published in some 400 periodicals. These are all analysed by an international group of collaborating experts. Among the topics covered are the history of cartography, cartographic personalities and institutions, the making of maps, areas such as topographical or atlas cartography, or maps for the blind, film and screen maps and the use of maps. Titles are listed in their original language and can be looked up either in the Author Index or in the English, French or German list of contents.

Book Geographical Information Systems in Hydrology

Download or read book Geographical Information Systems in Hydrology written by V.P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have witnessed an enormous interest in application of GIS in hydrology and water resources. This is partly evidenced by organization of sev eral national and international symposia or conferences under the sponsorship of various professional organizations. This increased interest is, in a large measure, in response to growing public sensitivity to environmental quality and management. The GIS technology has the ability to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, and visualize the diverse sets of geo-referenced data. On the other hand, hydrology is inherently spatial and distributed hydrologic models have large data requirements. The integration of hydrology and GIS is therefore quite natural. The integration involves three major components: (1) spatial data construction, (2) integration of spatial model layers, and (3) GIS and model interface. GIS can assist in design, calibration, modification and comparison of models. This integration is spreading worldwide and is expected to accelerate in the foreseeable future. Substantial op portunities exist in integration of GIS and hydrology. We believe there are enough challenges in use of GIS for conceptualizing and modeling complex hydrologic processes and for globalization of hydrology. The motivation for this book grew out of the desire to provide under one cover a range of applications of GIS tech nology in hydrology. It is hoped that the book will stimulate others to write more comprehensive texts on this subject of growing importance.

Book Role of Maps in Sci Tech Libraries

Download or read book Role of Maps in Sci Tech Libraries written by Ellis Mount and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps, charts and related items present special problems to libraries, for example a less organised bibliographic control mechanism, more difficult means of acquisitions, and problems of storage and preservation. This book, first published in 1985, deals with these problems and presents practical solutions for maps in library collections.

Book Computer Applications in Geography

Download or read book Computer Applications in Geography written by Paul M. Mather and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1991-08-26 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Applications in Geography Paul M. Mather Department of Geography, University of Nottingham, England Geography graduates are expected to be computer literate, yet the literature on computing is often inaccessible to them. This book is intended for undergraduate students of geography who wish to familiarise themselves with the terminology of computers and to read about the ways in which computers are presently being used in geography. It assumes no prior knowledge of computers and no mathematical skills beyond those possessed by the average layman. The first two chapters form a technical introduction to computers and data. The remaining five chapters are devoted to individual topics representing a selection of the main areas of computer use in geography and show how computers can be used to acquire, process and display geographical data. Worked examples, with example data sets, are given for three program packages that are widely used by geographers--SPSS, SYMAP and GIMMS. The book is comprehensive in its coverage of the major areas of computer applications and will be of interest to geographers dealing with statistics, digital cartography, remote sensing, geographical information systems and simulation models.

Book Environmental Information Management And Analysis

Download or read book Environmental Information Management And Analysis written by W K Michener and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-08-08 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most environmental studies are based upon data collected at fine spatial scales plots, sediments, cores, etc.. Furthermore, temporal scales of these studies have been relatively short days, weeks, months and few studies have exceeded three years duration the typical funding cycle.; Despite this history, environmental scientists are now being called upon to extrapolate findings from "plot-level" studies to broader spatial scales and from short-term studies to longer temporal scales, up to decades for questions related to long-term processes such as global warming and the rise in sea level.; The complex questions being addressed internationally require that scientists take advantage of new technologies including remote sensing, geographic information systems GIS, and powerful climatic and environmental simulation models. As more environmental scientists begin to work at these broader spatial and temporal scales, and to utilize many of the newer technologies, they are recognising a whole new class of problems.; This book aims to address the most pertinent issues, and includes a comprehensive review of selected topics, case studies, and theoretical discussions, divided into seven sections each preceded by a brief introduction.

Book International River Water Quality

Download or read book International River Water Quality written by Gerry Best and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-08-07 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers presented at the 2nd International River Quality Symposium. The papers give case studies of the quality of rivers in different parts of the world, focusing particularly on the polluted Vistula River in Poland and the revived Will amette River in Oregon, USA which was the subject of a major cleaning operation in the 1970s. The book provides valuable information on the quality of rivers in Eastern Europe, particulary Poland. It is timely since, with the collapse of communism, Eastern European countries are faced with tackling huge environmental problems created by the lack of investment in environmental technology. The situation in Poland is contrasted with the USA and UK where water pollution problems have largely been overcome.
