Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the design and test of a multipurpose actuation test rig to be used for loaded evaluation of actuation systems with rotary outputs and/or integrated as part of wing structure. It also describes a hydromechanical flutter damping module for an F-4 stabilator actuator. The module incorporates design improvements based on previous test results. Laboratory tests results on the improved module are presented. Development and test results of a linear force motor based upon a moving magnet concept, and the measured performance characteristics of the concept over a range of parameter variations are presented. A method of force enhancement for direct drive force motors and the corresponding test results applied to a moving coil force motor are described. The concept is based upon applying a limited time duration pulse to the force motor in order to increase the force output when required. The logic technique used to initiate the pulse application is presented. Applying a digital computer as a controller for an analog electrohydraulic control system requires consideration of the interface used. The effect of a pulse width modulation interface on the life of analog electrohydraulic hardware is presented. There is a potential for reducing the pumping capacity of an aircraft's flight control hydraulic system by using accumulators to store hydraulic energy. The results of a study using this approach and an F-16 simulation are presented. Keywords: Digital interface; Energy storage; Flight control hydraulics; Force enhancement, Flutter suppression.

Book A Feasibility Study of Self learning Adaptive Flight Control for High Performance Aircraft

Download or read book A Feasibility Study of Self learning Adaptive Flight Control for High Performance Aircraft written by Stephen G. Hoppe and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the feasibility of a self-learning adaptive system for the flight control of high performance aircraft has been performed. A flight control system was developed for the investigation of the stability augmentation of the longitudinal axis of the F101B aircraft using self-learning adaptive control. The learning adaptive controller developed employs a three-loop concept. The innermost loop comprises a linear feedback control system in which a set of control gains is adjusted by a second (adaptive) loop employing a parameter identifier and a trainable function generator (automation). The automation provides the correct values of feedback gain in response to patterns derived from the identified aircraft parameters. The third loop (the learning loop) measures control system performance, and continually retrains the automation to improve the performance. Experiments were performed with a digital simulation of the aircraft and the learning adaptive control system. Results of the experiments indicate that learning adaptive control is feasible. However, a number of significant technical problems must be overcome prior to the use of such a control system in tactical aircraft. Studies of sensitivity must be performed to assess the effect of small perturbations in the identification parameters on system performance. Extended studies of property extraction from the identified parameters is required, and means for further simplifying the control structure is of importance in a real system. (Author).

Book Analysis and Preliminary Design of an Advanced Technology Transport Flight Control System

Download or read book Analysis and Preliminary Design of an Advanced Technology Transport Flight Control System written by Ronald Frazzini and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis and preliminary design of an advanced technology transport aircraft flight control system using avionics and flight control concepts appropriate to the 1980-1985 time period are discussed. Specifically, the techniques and requirements of the flight control system were established, a number of candidate configurations were defined, and an evaluation of these configurations was performed to establish a recommended approach. Candidate configurations based on redundant integration of various sensor types, computational methods, servo actuator arrangements and data-transfer techniques were defined to the functional module and piece-part level. Life-cycle costs, for the flight control configurations, as determined in an operational environment model for 200 aircraft over a 15-year service life, were the basis of the optimum configuration selection tradeoff. The recommended system concept is a quad digital computer configuration utilizing a small microprocessor for input/output control, a hexad skewed set of conventional sensors for body rate and body acceleration, and triple integrated actuators.

Book Analysis of Digital Flight Control Systems with Flying Qualities Applications

Download or read book Analysis of Digital Flight Control Systems with Flying Qualities Applications written by Richard F. Whitbeck and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisitation and extension of classical sampled data approaches for the analysis of discretely controlled continuous systems is the focus of this report. A review of basic linear analysis topics required to support later developments is given. These topics include Laplace, z- and advanced z-transform facts; partial fraction expansion; data holds and the switch decomposition technique. Extension of switch decomposition for the vector signal case is given. A new direct transform domain approach for analyzing two-rate sampled systems is developed. This approach also applies for multi-rate sampled systems in restricted circumstances. Utility of this approach resides in its operator notation and conventions for manipulation in connection with vector block diagram algebra. This, in turn, expedites development of pulse transfer functions and of response recursion relations for multivariable, closed-loop systems. This is accomplished without resorting to the more complicated switch decomposition method. Multi-rate sampling analysis procedures are used to sharpen the concept of 'frequency response' for discretely excited, continuous systems. All methods of analysis presented in this report are closed-form and exact in that no approximation is required in the mathematical development of any result.

Book Design and Test of a Hydra Optic Flight Control Actuation System HOFCAS Concept

Download or read book Design and Test of a Hydra Optic Flight Control Actuation System HOFCAS Concept written by Lloyd L. Kohnhorst and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the development, testing and demonstration of a Hydra-Optic Flight Control Actuation System (HOFCAS) suitable for the actuation tasks of a Digital Fly-By-Wire flight control system. HOFCAS offers a realistic, cost effective approach to reducing the susceptibility of aircraft fly-by-wire systems to EMP, EMI, RFI, lightning, etc. By removing the conventional wiring to the actuation areas of an aircraft, the concept eliminates the opportunity for electromagnetic hazards to enter the system. The HOFCAS concept provides a direct drive, hydraulically powered surface actuation system that provides immunity to electromagnetic radiation. The direct drive actuator, developed in a previous multiphase Navy Advanced Flight Control Actuation System (AFCAS) program, uses an electrical torque motor to power a single stage hydraulic valve for control of the actuator. A hydraulically powered alternator supplies the electrical power needed to operate the torque motor. The actuator command signal is supplied by a fiber optic link. The HOFCAS was configured to operate the directional control system in a T-2C aircraft. The AFCAS program demonstrated direct digital control of a surface actuator, and the HOFCAS extends this technology to demonstrate that conventional interconnecting electrical wiring to the surface actuators can be eliminated.
