Book Computers in Analytical Chemistry

Download or read book Computers in Analytical Chemistry written by Charles H. Orr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analytical chemist is in the forefront of the race to use computers in laboratory work. The modern laboratory has a large number of instruments churning out information, and mechanized procedures for handling the huge amount of data are imperative. The marriage of instruments and computers is offered as a way of easing the burden on the scientist, as well as optimiz ing the performance of the analytical instruments. Computer systems can be applied to all the major analytical instrument procedures, and many of the leading instrument manufacturers are developing and producing systems for use in the laboratory, both for data acquisition and for control purposes. It is, therefore, timely that the session on computers in analytical chem istry of the Eastern Analytical Symposium, held in November 1968, be published in this series, which has as its aim progress in analytical chemistry. The contents are wide-ranging and include applications to mass spectrometry, X-ray spectrography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas chroma tography, infrared spectrography, the use of dedicated computers, and the multiple user laboratory. Thanks are due to the authors of the papers and to the session chairmen for their efforts in the production of this very worthwhile addition to the series.

Book Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research V1

Download or read book Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research V1 written by C.E. Klopfenstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research, Volume 1, is the first of multi-volume series that provides updated information on developments in computer-assisted techniques for chemical and biochemical research. Each volume will include a variety of review articles by expert practicing computer-chemists and biochemists, dealing with a wide array of topics. These will range from delineations of design philosophies and of laboratory computer systems to descriptions of special computer hardware developed to solve specific problems. Also included will be articles discussing algorithms, languages, and programming techniques; articles devoted to the more important applications of digital computer methods to specific problems (e.g., Fourier transform spectrometry, stopped-flow kinetics, automated spectrophotometry); and aticles devoted to techniques for training both graduates and undergraduates in laboratory computing. The present text contains seven chapters and begins with a description of an educational program on digital computer instrumentation for the chemistry laboratory. Subsequent chapters cover topics such as multiprocessor systems in laboratory automation; a simple computer system for on-line data collection and manipulation in the biochemical laboratory; Fourier transform spectroscopy; and a small computer system used to collect and process data from three electron spin resonance spectrometers at the University of Oregon.

Book A Bibliographic Guide to Resources in Scientific Computing 1945 1975

Download or read book A Bibliographic Guide to Resources in Scientific Computing 1945 1975 written by Jeffrey R. Yost and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-10-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential contribution to the study of the history of computers, this work identifies the computer's impact on the physical, biological, cognitive, and medical sciences. References fundamental to the understudied area of the history of scientific computing also document the significant role of the sciences in helping to shape the development of computer technology. More broadly, the many resources on scientific computing help demonstrate how the computer was the most significant scientific instrument of the 20th century. The only guide of its kind covering the use and impact of computers on the the physical, biological, medical, and cognitive sciences, it contains more than 1,000 annotated citations to carefully selected secondary and primary resources. Historians of technology and science will find this a very useful resource. Computer scientists, physicians, biologists, chemists, and geologists will also benefit from this extensive bibliography on the history of computer applications and the sciences.

Book Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research V2

Download or read book Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research V2 written by C.E. Klopfenstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research, Volume 2, provides a suitable medium permitting communication of important results of workers in computer-assisted chemistry. The present volume complements its predecessor and includes reviews and original articles about a variety of topics not dealt with earlier. The scope of the series is broad and the articles are designed to provide coverage of state-of-the-art advances and to prevent wasteful duplications of effort. The book contains seven chapters and opens with a survey of the field of pattern recognition in chemistry along with past and future directions. This is followed by separate chapters covering an on-line graphics system as a teaching aid in physical chemistry; financial and hardware analysis and specifications of laboratory minicomputer systems; and the use of these principles in the automation of a clinical laboratory. Subsequent chapters deal with the use of new technology in automation of two specific types of experimental apparatus; and computer automation in gas-liquid chromatography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers have been applied to problems in chemistry and the chemical sciences since the dawn of the computer age; however, it is only in the past ten or fifteen years that we have seen the emergence of computational chemistry as a field of research in its own right. Its practitioners, computational chemists, are neither chemists who dabble in computing nor programmers who have an interest in chemistry, but computa tional scientists whose aim is to solve a wide range of chemical problems using modern computing machines. This book gives a broad overview of the methods and techniques employed by the computational chemist and of the wide range of problems to which he is applying them. It is divided into three parts. The first part records the basics of chemistry and of computational science that are essential to an understanding of the methods of computational chemistry. These methods are described in the second part of the book. In the third part, a survey is given of some areas in which the techniques of computational chemistry are being applied. As a result of the limited space available in a single volume, the areas covered are necessarily selective. Nevertheless, a sufficiently wide range of applications are described to provide the reader with a balanced overview of the many problems being attacked by computational studies in chemistry.

Book BASIC Microcomputing and Biostatistics

Download or read book BASIC Microcomputing and Biostatistics written by Donald W. Rogers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BASIC Microcomputing and Biostatistics is designed as the first practical "how to" guide to both computer programming in BASIC and the statis tical data processing techniques needed to analyze experimental, clinical, and other numerical data. It provides a small vocabulary of essential com puter statements and shows how they are used to solve problems in the bio logical, physical, and medical sciences. No mathematical background be yond algebra and an inkling of the principles of calculus is assumed. All more advanced mathematical techniques are developed from "scratch" before they are used. The computing language is BASIC, a high-level lan guage that is easy to learn and widely available using time-sharing com puter systems and personal microcomputers. The strategy of the book is to present computer programming at the outset and to use it throughout. BASIC is developed in a way reminiscent of graded readers used in human languages; the first programs are so sim ple that they can be read almost without an introduction to the language. Each program thereafter contains new vocabulary and one or more con cepts, explained in the text, not used in the previous ones. By gradual stages, the reader can progress from programs that do nothing more than count from one to ten to sophisticated programs for nonlinear curve fitting, matrix algebra, and multiple regression. There are 33 working programs and, except for the introductory ones, each performs a useful function in everyday data processing problems encountered by the experimentalist in many diverse fields.
