Book Computers in Analytical Chemistry

Download or read book Computers in Analytical Chemistry written by Charles H. Orr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analytical chemist is in the forefront of the race to use computers in laboratory work. The modern laboratory has a large number of instruments churning out information, and mechanized procedures for handling the huge amount of data are imperative. The marriage of instruments and computers is offered as a way of easing the burden on the scientist, as well as optimiz ing the performance of the analytical instruments. Computer systems can be applied to all the major analytical instrument procedures, and many of the leading instrument manufacturers are developing and producing systems for use in the laboratory, both for data acquisition and for control purposes. It is, therefore, timely that the session on computers in analytical chem istry of the Eastern Analytical Symposium, held in November 1968, be published in this series, which has as its aim progress in analytical chemistry. The contents are wide-ranging and include applications to mass spectrometry, X-ray spectrography, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gas chroma tography, infrared spectrography, the use of dedicated computers, and the multiple user laboratory. Thanks are due to the authors of the papers and to the session chairmen for their efforts in the production of this very worthwhile addition to the series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers have been applied to problems in chemistry and the chemical sciences since the dawn of the computer age; however, it is only in the past ten or fifteen years that we have seen the emergence of computational chemistry as a field of research in its own right. Its practitioners, computational chemists, are neither chemists who dabble in computing nor programmers who have an interest in chemistry, but computa tional scientists whose aim is to solve a wide range of chemical problems using modern computing machines. This book gives a broad overview of the methods and techniques employed by the computational chemist and of the wide range of problems to which he is applying them. It is divided into three parts. The first part records the basics of chemistry and of computational science that are essential to an understanding of the methods of computational chemistry. These methods are described in the second part of the book. In the third part, a survey is given of some areas in which the techniques of computational chemistry are being applied. As a result of the limited space available in a single volume, the areas covered are necessarily selective. Nevertheless, a sufficiently wide range of applications are described to provide the reader with a balanced overview of the many problems being attacked by computational studies in chemistry.

Book Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research V2

Download or read book Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research V2 written by C.E. Klopfenstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers in Chemical and Biochemical Research, Volume 2, provides a suitable medium permitting communication of important results of workers in computer-assisted chemistry. The present volume complements its predecessor and includes reviews and original articles about a variety of topics not dealt with earlier. The scope of the series is broad and the articles are designed to provide coverage of state-of-the-art advances and to prevent wasteful duplications of effort. The book contains seven chapters and opens with a survey of the field of pattern recognition in chemistry along with past and future directions. This is followed by separate chapters covering an on-line graphics system as a teaching aid in physical chemistry; financial and hardware analysis and specifications of laboratory minicomputer systems; and the use of these principles in the automation of a clinical laboratory. Subsequent chapters deal with the use of new technology in automation of two specific types of experimental apparatus; and computer automation in gas-liquid chromatography.

Book Intelligent Software for Chemical Analysis

Download or read book Intelligent Software for Chemical Analysis written by L.M.C. Buydens and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-09-03 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various emerging techniques for automating intelligent functions in the laboratory are described in this book. Explanations on how systems work are given and possible application areas are suggested. The main part of the book is devoted to providing data which will enable the reader to develop and test his own systems. The emphasis is on expert systems; however, promising developments such as self-adaptive systems, neural networks and genetic algorithms are also described. The book has been written by chemists with a great deal of practical experience in developing and testing intelligent software, and therefore offers first-hand knowledge. Laboratory staff and managers confronted with commercial intelligent software will find information on the functioning, possibilities and limitations thereof, enabling them to select and use modern software in an optimum fashion. Finally, computer scientists and information scientists will find a wealth of data on the application of contemporary artificial intelligence techniques.

Book Digital Electronics and Laboratory Computer Experiments

Download or read book Digital Electronics and Laboratory Computer Experiments written by Charles Wilkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science undergraduates have come to accept the use of computers as commonplace. The daily use of portable sophisticated electronic calculators (some of them rivaling general-purpose minicomputers in their capa bi li ti es) has hastened this development. Over the past several years, computer assisted experimentation has assumed an important role in the experimental laboratory. Mini- and microcomputer systems have become an important part of the physical scientist's array of analytical instruments. Prompted by our beliefthat this was an inevitable development, we began several years aga to develop the curricular materials presented in this manual. At the outset, several objectives seemed important to uso First, insofar as possible, the experiments included should be thoroughly tested and error free. Second, they should be compatible with a variety of laboratory computer, data-acquisition, and control systems. Third, little or no previous background in either electronics or programming should be necessary. (Of course, such background would be advantageous. ) To satisfy these objectives, we decided to adopt a widespread high-level computer language, BASIC, suitably modified for the purpose. Furthermore, we have purposely avoided specifying any particular system or equipment. Rather, the functional characteristics of both hardware and software required are stipulated. The experiments have been developed using Varian 620 and Hewlett-Packard 2100 series computers, but we believe they are readily transferable to other commonly available computer systems with a minimum of difficulty.
