Book Digging Up Roots

Download or read book Digging Up Roots written by A. Nicole Alexander and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-05 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. Nicole Alexander started life as a bright-eyed young girl just like many other women. She had dreams of finding the perfect life, but life had other plans for her. In her memoir, Digging Up Roots, Nicole writes of the search for her true path after almost two decades of living a lesbian lifestyle. "Maybe you were born this way." "You can't help who you love." "God is love and He loves you regardless." That's what the world wanted Nicole to believe about her lesbian lifestyle. The church told her she was demon possessed, an abomination to God's law, but what about the Christian women with whom she was intimate? She never felt that she chose to have certain feelings; she did, however, make the choice to stop fighting her urges. Through it all, she knew there was much more to her story than what others could see, but with so many contradictions in her life, it took Nicole years to make the final decision about what type of life she wanted to live. Nicole offers a practical look at how she became entangled in homosexuality, and how she fought her way out with God's help by digging up the roots and planting the seeds for a new life.

Book excerpt: Kiana Davis expresses a poignant and impassioned voice that is a composite of those Black female poets that have defined this and previous generations, those such as Nikki Giovanni, Maya Angelou and Ntozake Shange. These poets pushed the envelope, expanded the discourse, and so elegantly described the underbelly of the Black Experience, as well as its beauty. Davis takes us on a journey through her self-evolution, from a little brown girl growing up in an environment that didn't affirm her image, her perspectives and her intelligence, to a young woman that is coming into self-recognition and a dawning appreciation for every experience from her past that has "seasoned" her and shaped her existence. Her words penetrate your soul, and leave you forever changed - Debrena Jackson Gandy, National Best-selling Author and Speake

Book excerpt: For many years I had wondered about my Great Grandfather Herron and his family.'s story. Presently, there seemed to be an urgency (unsure as to why) to see what the family had chosen to hide - maybe I would find nothing. But . . . I did. I began genealogy research in 2008. I have been led on some wonderful but exhausting journeys; none quite like the story of Betsy. Furthermore, I almost stopped researching my Herren family line with its plethora of mazes. Almost. There is great power in sharing a family story. It's hard to share hard or sensitive subjects. However, it forces us to press through the shame and embarrassment, then, we can choose to accept and heal. Family stories should be told. A great place to start is to ask yourself, "If I had to leave my children with one or two stories, which ones would I want them to know?" As for me, my daughter will be left with many stories . . . many. My cousins, too, know and understand my passion for family history. I never stop researching. It's in my blood. When my time is up, I pray the stories will still be told - as there will be many new ones. Probably a few with me as the main character. Anna Allison-Burgess

Book Understanding Roots

Book excerpt: Understanding Roots uncovers one of the greatest mysteries underground—the secret lives and magical workings of the roots that move and grow invisibly beneath our feet. Roots, it seems, do more than just keep a plant from falling over: they gather water and nutrients, exude wondrous elixirs to create good soil, make friends with microbes and fungi, communicate with other roots, and adapt themselves to all manner of soils, winds, and climates, nourishing and sustaining our gardens, lawns, and woodlands. Understanding Roots contains over 115 enchanting and revealing root drawings that most people have never seen, from prairies, grasslands, and deserts, as well as drawings based on excavations of vegetable, fruit, nut, and ornamental tree roots. Every root system presented in this book was drawn by people literally working in the trenches, sketching the roots where they grew. The text provides a verydetailed review of all aspects of transplanting; describes how roots work their magic to improve soil nutrients; investigates the hidden life of soil microbes and their mysterious relationship to roots; explores the question of whether deep roots really gather more unique nutrients than shallow roots; shares the latest research about the mysteries of mycorrhizal (good fungal) association; shows you exactly where to put your fertilizer, compost, water, and mulch to help plants flourish; tells you why gray water increases crop yields more than fresh water; and, most importantly, reveals the science behind all the above (with citations for each scientific paper). This book contains at least eighty percent more new information, more results of the latest in-depth and up-to-date explorations, and even more helpful guidelines on roots than the author’s previous book (Roots Demystified: Change Your Garden Habits to Help Roots Thrive). This is not a revised edition—it’s a whole new stand-alone book.
