Book Introduction to Ferroic Materials

Download or read book Introduction to Ferroic Materials written by Vinod Wadhawan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-12-21 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferroic materials are important, not only because of the improved understanding of condensed matter, but also because of their present and potential device applications. This book presents a unified description of ferroic materials at an introductory level, with the unifying factor being the occurrence of nondisruptive phase transitions in crystals that alter point-group symmetry. The book also aims to further systemitize the subject of ferroic materials, employing some formal, carefully worded, definitions and classification schemes. The basic physical principles leading to the wide-ranging applications of ferroic materials are also explained, while placing extra emphasis on the utilitarian role of symmetry in materials science.

Book Defects and Transport in Oxides

Download or read book Defects and Transport in Oxides written by Robert Jaffee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEFECTS AND TRANSPORT IN OXIDES is the proceedings of the eighth Battelle Colloquium in the Materials Sciences, held in Columbus and Salt Fork, Ohio, September 17-22, 1973. It took as its theme the relationship between defects and transport of both mass and charge in oxides. Applications of defect-controlled transport to a number of important processes in oxides also were covered. In selecting this topic, the Organizing Committee thought that 1973 was timely to bring together the leading theoretical and experimental researchers in the oxide transport field to review its status in a critical way, and to consider current major research directions and how research in the future might be guided into fruitful areas. The meeting was highlighted by the presentation of several papers which suggest that major advances in our understanding of transport in oxides appear to be imminent. These papers dealt with the results of new theoretical approaches whereby the energies and configurations of defects may be calculated, and with new experimental techniques for indirectly observing these defects, previously thought to be below the limits of experimental resolving power. Other papers, dealing with the application of defect chemistry to technological processes, served to demonstrate the successes and to point out yet unresolved problems associated with ix x PREFACE understanding the chemistry of imperfect crystals.

Book Ferroelectrics Literature Index

Download or read book Ferroelectrics Literature Index written by T. F. Connolly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on ferroelectricity and ferroelectric materials started in 1920 with the discovery by Valasek that the variation of spontaneous polarization in Rochelle salt with sign and magnitude of an applied electric field traced a complete and reproducible hysteresis loop. Activity in the field was sporadic until 1935, when Busch and co-workers announced the observation of similar behavior in potassium dihydrogen phosphate and related compounds. Progress thereafter continued at a modest level with the undertaking of some theoretical as well as further experimental studies. In 1944, von Hippel and co-workers discovered ferroelectricity in barium titanate. The technological importance of ceramic barium titanate and other perovskites led to an upsurge of interest, with many new ferroelectrics being identified in the following decade. By 1967, about 2000 papers on various aspects of ferroelectricity had been published. The bulk of this widely dispersed literature was concerned with the experimental measurement of dielectric, crystallographic, thermal, electromechanical, elastic, optical, and magnetic properties. A critical and excellently organized cpmpilation based on these data appeared in 1969 with the publica tion of Landolt-Bornstein, Volume 111/3. This superb tabulation gave instant access to the results in the literature on nearly 450 pure substances and solid solutions of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric materials. Continuing interest in ferroelectrics, spurred by the growing importance of electrooptic crystals, resulted in the publication of almost as many additional papers by the end of 1969 as had been surveyed in Landolt-Bornstein.

Book Chemical Sensors

Download or read book Chemical Sensors written by Ghenadii Korotcenkov and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical sensors are integral to the automation of myriad industrial processes and everyday monitoring of such activities as public safety, engine performance, medical therapeutics, and many more. This 4 volume reference work covering simulation and modeling will serve as the perfect complement to Momentum Press's 6 volume reference works "Chemical Sensors: Fundamentals of Sensing Materials" and "Chemical Sensors: Comprehensive Sensor Technologies", which present detailed information related to materials, technologies, construction and application of various devices for chemical sensing. This 4 volume comprehensive reference work analyzes approaches used for computer simulation and modeling in various fields of chemical sensing and discusses various phenomena important for chemical sensing such as bulk and surface diffusion, adsorption, surface reactions, sintering, conductivity, mass transport, interphase interactions, etc. In this work it will be shown that theoretical modeling and simulation of the processes, being a basic for chemical sensors operation, could provide considerable progress in choosing both optimal materials and optimal configurations of sensing elements for using in chemical sensors. Each simulation and modeling volume in the present series reviews modeling principles and approaches peculiar to specific groups of materials and devices applied for chemical sensing. Volume 1: Microstructural Characterization and Modeling of Metal Oxides covers microstructural characterization of metal oxides using SEM, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and in-situ high temperature SEM, and multiscale atomistic simulation and modeling of metal oxides, including surface state, stability and metal oxide interactions with gas molecules, water and metals.
